To all whom it may. concern:
- Be it known thatI, CHARLES B. honour, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Crossings, of which the following is a specification.
' My inventionrelates to improvements in railway-crossings and frogs and especially crossings which ordinarily have gaps or recesses for the passage of the wheel flanges of the rolling stock of the road, and'where the corners of the crossings are apt to become defective and broken under I the pounding of the wheels.
It is an object of my invention to provide a crossing in which theflanges of the wheels raise the tread portions from the said crossing and eliminate all noise due to wheels jumping across the flange grooves.
It is a further ob ect of my invention to provide'replaceable wearing blocks or members at the intersecting corners of the said cross groovesof the crossing,"so that new corners may be set into the body of the crossing and secured by any simple means which is located at convenient positions on thecrossing and accessible without the removing ofthe entire crossing structure from the road bed.
It isa-still further object of my invention to provide a'crossing with a removable I groove section and to have the approaching end portions inclined, so that the flange of a wheel will roll up on the groove section gradually and raise the tread off the wheel off the crossing frame, thereby preventing the wheel from striking the corners of the grooves while the wheel passes thereby.
It is a still further object of my invention to cushion the replaceable groove and corner blocks or members with a soft but durable material, whereby the double wear upon the groove members and the corner blocks due to the wheels passing in different directions will be greatly reduced.
With these and other objects in view, my invention comprises certain novel constructions,

In'the accompanying drawingtwo forms of the invention have been illustrated and the details and "features of' the invention will now be more specifically described and claimed, referencebeing had thereto. In the drawing, 8 indicates the body portion or frame of a railroad crossing, the angle of intersection being represented as 90. The frame is provided with grooves 9 which have replaceable groove members 10 lying therein. These groove members are formed with the approaching ends as 11' and 12 being inclined, the inclination stopping at the edge of the recess 17, the intermediate distance as let being horizontal or parallel at the top of the frame of the crossing. The ends of these groove members are secured to the frame of the crossing by bolts 15 which may be welded or secured in any'other convenient manner; these bolts extend through the body portion 8 of the crossing and are tightened thereto by a nut 16. It will be observed that these groove members may be replaced at any time by loosening the bolt 15, whereby the said members may be detached from the frame of the crossing.
At the intersecting groove points are recesses 17 formedin the frame of the crossing, so that a detachable corner block 18 may be set therein above the groove member 10, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. These groove' members are formed so as to make a continuous flange engaging member, and are held in the recess 17 by bolts 19 or in any other suitable manner, which may be later determined.
It will be observed that these corner blocks 18 do not extend in depth to the bottom of the groove member 10, but are of "occurs due .to the "wheelsrolling in "both" ample depth to insure the" proper strength required at'the intersections of the grooves where the double wear upon the crossing directions. 7 I
It will also be observed'that the inclination 11 of the groove members is so gradual. that there is no danger of a wheel 'jumping when the flange begins to roll up .upon the groove members. The bolts 19'are' so placed with respect to the grooves that-they can not be touchedby the tread of a wheel asthere is amplexdistance between :them and the edge of the adjacent groove.
It will also be observed-thatthe bolts which are shown welded to'the groove members in this particular instancesare beneath the grooves and. entirely away-Tirom' the flange oft-he wheel. 1 v
