Further objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent. as it is better understood by reference to the following specification when road in connection with the accompanying drawing, illustrating the preferred embodiments thereof, in which:

Referring to the drawing, 5 and 6 indi cute respectively the end and Side sills of a car upon which the floor 7 is supported. The end and Side plates 8 and 9 respectively are supported in spared relation to the sills 5 :md (i by the upright members 10 and braces 11 which in turn support the outside sheathing l2 and lining '13. Thirooi 14 is supported by the carliuos 15 mounted on the side plates 9 and a ruiming board 1G is supported above the roof 14 on the brackcts 17, bolted to the end plates 8u The forcgoii'lg is thc usual house car construction and forms no part of my invention. The ends of housecars are subject to severo shocks in use owing to the movement of materiel contained therein when force is suddenly applied to move the car. This results in frequent breaking down of the ends so that expensive repairs are necessary from time to time. My invention is designed to rovide inexpensive means for strengthenmg the ends so that they will successfully withstand shocks. Thus the life of the cer will be materially lengthened and the cost of upkeep reduced.
In carrying ont my invention I prov-ide. one piece end member 18 of rolled section and formed substantially in the shape of an inverted U, as clearly indicatedin Fig. 4 of the drawing. This member is secured in position on an end of the ea-r by bolts 19 extending through the inner flange of the member and engaging the end sill and plato as woll as thc outside slicathing and lining of the car end. This forms a particularly rigid and shock resistant combination as all shocks affecting the end of the car ure immediately transmitted and distributed to the member 18 which is sufficiently strong to eliminate the possibility of breakage.
Preferably top braces 20 are secured by the bolts 19 extcnding through the flange of the member 18 at the top thereof and through the end plate 8. The free ends 'of these braces are secured by bolts 21 extending through the plates 9. Any tendency, therefore, of the upper end of the member 1S to move outwardly is resisted by the top brace attached thereto and transmitting the stress to the side plates.
I also preferably provide a member 22 of rolled section which is secured at its ends by bolts 23 to the outer sheathing and 1ining of the car end and extends transversely across the car end through suitable slots 24 provided near the lower ends of the member 18. Obviously as illustrated in Fig. 5, 3 separate members 24 may be bolted to the car ends and connected to the ends of the member 18 bv angle plates 25, held in o sition by the bolts Q6. The slots 24 are t us eliminnted and the full strength of the rolled section preserved.
From the foregoing it will lbe readily undci-stood that l have perfected a. honselcar emistrnctnre having certain novel features which materially strengthen it Without adding greatly to the weight or cost of the structure. The rolled section of which the member 18 is composed is extremely light in proportion to its strength and by forming it in a single piece I preserve its maximum shock resistant efficiency.
It will be apparent, therefore that various changes may be made in t e form, arrangement and construction of the parts,
without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, or eeorifiem any of its material advantages, the form erembefore described being merely the preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. A. house-car end-construction embodying n, bent one piece member of rolled section having spaced and connected legs se cured to the end sill' and plete of the cal', the longer sectional exis of Said member be- .ing perpendicular to the car end.
2. A house-ear end-construction embody- 1 i' a one piece bent U-sheped member of rldisled section, the legs of said member being secured to the end sill and plete of the car, and said member being arranged with its longer sectional exis perpendicular to the car end.
3. A house-car end-ooi:struction embody ing a bent one piece member of rolled eeeu tion having specedand connected legs, Suid member being secured to the ear exteriorly thereof with its longer sectional axis perpendicular to the car end.
4. A house-car endbonstruetion embodying a bent one piece steel member of rolled section having spaced and connected legs vertically disposed et the end of the ear :1nd secured to the end sill end plete thereof, seid member being arranged with its longer sectional axis perpendicular to the eer end.
5. A house car end construction embody ing un end sill and plete und an inverted U-sliaped member of rolled section bolted to the cnr end exteriorly of the em' and connecting seid sill and plete, the longer Sectional exis of said member bein in perpendicular relation to the eer en GEORGE A.
