HARRY AMAZON SILLS, OF OBLONG, ILLINOIS.
VALVE-LIFTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 23, 1919.
Application filed May 8, 1919. Serial No. 295,550.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY A. SILLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oblong, in the county of Crawford and State of Illinois, have invented a' new and useful Valve-Lifter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tool for use in lifting the valves of explosive engines, one of its objects being to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, can be applied and used readily, and has means whereby the spring of the valve can be held under compression as long as desired.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will.appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tool.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 22, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on line .33, Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates a lever having an offset portion 2 terminating in a fork 3 while the other end portion of the lever constitutes one of the handles of the tool, as shown at 4. A pivot pin 5 or the like serves to connect the lever 1 to the curved portion 6 of a lever which crosses the lever 1 and has one end portion forming a handle 7. The other end portion of the lever 6 is in the form of a hook 8 terminating in a point 9 and this point is adapted to engage the center of the top of a valve while the stem of said valve is extended through the fork 3. A link 10 is pivotally connected, as at 11, to the lever handle 7 and is provided with a longitudinal slot 12 and transverse teeth or serrations 13. A laterally extending boss 14 is formed on one side of the handle 4: and has teeth adapted to engage certain of the teeth 13, as shown in Fig. 3. A slot 15 is formed longitudinally within the handle 4 and intersects the boss 14 and extending through this slot 15 and the slot 12 is a bolt 16 having a head 17 at one end while its other end is engaged by a nut 18.
In using the tool, the bolt 16 is loosened and the fork 3 is inserted under the washer W at one end of spring S on the stem 8 of the valve V. The point 9 is then adjusted onto the valve and by drawing the handles 4 and 7 toward each other the spring S will be compressed between the fork 3 and the point 9, as shown. During this movement the link 10 will slip over the toothed boss 14: after which the handles can be held against relative movement by tightening the bolt and causing the teeth on the boss and on the link to interengage.
What is claimed is 1. A tool of the character described including pivotally connected levers, a fork at one end of one lever, a hooked portion at the corresponding end of the other lever, a toothed link upon one of the levers and slidable across the other lever, said link having a longitudinal slot, and means within the slot in the link and engaging one of the levers for adjustabl securing the levers against relative movement.
2. A tool of the character described including pivotally connected levers, a fork at one end of one of the levers, a hooked portion at the corresponding end of the other lever, a longitudinally slotted toothed link pivotally connected to one of the levers, a toothed boss upon the other lever, there being a slot intersecting the boss, a bolt extending through the two slots, and means engaging the bolt for clamping the boss in engagement with the toothed link.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HARRY AMAZON SILLS.
