Description

l I A.-1. LYON. I Combinedlnkstand and Bell.,
No. 131,692. "Patented Sepl,24,1872.
PATENT OFFICE.
ADDISON J. LYON, OE MOUNT vEENON, NEW YOEK.
lwlF'RovlsMl-:NT |N COMBINED lNKsTANDs AND BeLLs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,692, dated September 24, 1872.
`.'Z'o all whom it may concern: l.
Beit known that I, ADDISON JEssE LYON, of Mount Vernon, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Inkstands; and I do hereby declare the following to be, a full, clear,'and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled inV the art to make and use the saine,
referencebeing had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this speciication, in which drawing `li'gure 1 is a side View of my invention;
l Fig. 2 is a plan, and Fig-3 is a vertical section taken in the line .r a' of Fig. 2.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. This invention relates to a combination of an inkstand and bell; andconsists in an ar rangement of devices whereby they are connected to each other detachably, so that when desired they can be connected to form one piece, or be detached from each other to be used indifferent locations apart, the mode of connection being such that the inkstand and bell are not thereby altered so as to prevent l their natural separate use apart, but are left complete and in perfect condition, notwith int-O which the base D of the bell E is fitted so as to be capable of being moved in and out with facility, the sides of the base D being inclined in a corresponding manner so as to form the male portion of the dovetail joint. Inthis manner I produce a sliding connection or joint which enables one to secure the articles to each other with facility, and also to detach them; andwhich is not liable to get out of order, which does not weaken or injure the articles or their frames,.or impair their usefulness; which does not require essential alterations in the construction of the inkstand or the bell,
but is applicable to inkstands and bells of ordinary construction as well as to their frames; and which does not prevent or disable either article from being detached and carried away andused separately from each other. When the articles are united in their joint I secure them to eachl other, to prevent accidental displacement, by a locking device, consisting of a spring, F, fastened to a convenient part of the extension C, and having at its end a catch, G, which works through the side of the extension so as to come behind the base or frame of the bell when the latter is in position in its joint. The catch G can be beveled in the usual manner to allow the bell-frame to enter the joint automatically.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure l by Letters Patent, is-
1. An inkstand and bell, detaehably connected together by the joint C D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2.. The frame B of an inkstand, provided with an extension, C, to receive the base D of a bell, the extension and base adapted to be locked together by a catch, G, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
This specification signed by me this 22d day of April, 1872.
