To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER Wria roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakewood, in the county of State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuel Air Mixing Apparatus for 'Internal-Coi'nbustion Motors, of which the following is-a specification. y I r p r This invention relates generally to a fuel and air mixing apparatus for internal combustion motors, and particularly to mechanisni-actuated by the governor for control ling the mixture of air and gas supplied to gas eiigiines;
More specifically the invention relates to an adjusting mechanism arranged between the air and fuel inlet valves and the governor whereby, by the movement of a single element, the proportion of the volume of air to the volume of fuel as controlled by the governor, may be varied.

In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, 1 represents a governor of any preferred type, with a groove 2 arranged upon the'mo'vable member, the other parts of the governor being such that this member moves upward with an increase in speed. This groove receives blocks 3 supported on suitable pins 4, secured in the half round portions 5 of the half lever members which make the governor lever 6 itself. This governor lever 6 is pivoted upon a pin 7, mounted in a bracket 8, secured to a stationary part, the outer or opposite end of the lever being free to move up or down with the operation of the governor. The free end of the governor lever is provided with posts 9 and 10 which are spaced apart and carry at their outer ends a strip 11, provided with a slot 12, shown in Fig. 1. The extreme outer end of the lever is provided with a connecting block 13 for a purpose to be described.-
Mounted upon a stationary part is a block 14 provided with a pin 15 upon which is pivoted a fuel inlet valve lever 16, provided within its outer end with a slot 17, adapted to receive loosely a pin 18'. This pin 18 is carried by an adjusting member 19, rigidly held in any adjusted position in the slot 12 by a nut 20. The inlet valve lever between the end of the slot 17 and the pin 15 is provided with a pin 21 to which the fuel inlet valveis connected.
Supported above this lever mechanism already described, is a fuel and air mixing valve mechanism and it comprises a valve casing 22, having an a'dmission chamber 23 in communication with the cylinder. This casing is also provided with an inwardly extending mixing housino- 24, forming a part of the casing 22 ant having near its inner end opposed ports '25 and 26, these ports being in alinement with each other and in alinement with the openings 27 and 28 formed in the casing 22. Formed within the casing 22, about the housing 24, and separated from the chamber 23, is a fuel chamber 29 connected to any suitable source of fuel supply by the connection 30. This chamber 29 communicates by opposed openings 31 and 32 with the chamber of the niixing housing 24, as is clearly shown, and these openings 31 and 32 are in alinement with openings 33- and 34 extending through the casing 22. The set of openings 25,- 26, 27, 28 and the set of openings 31, 32, 33, and 34 are arranged in parallel alinement for a purpose which will appear. The housing 24 is open at its outer end and communicates with the air inlet valve 1nechanism to be described. Secured in the openings 27 and 28 are admission valve guides 35 and 36 respectively, and these guides receive" the stem 37 of a compound admissionvalve comprising the valve portions 38 and 39, which cooperate with suitable seats formed about the openings 25 and 26 respectively. The upper end of the valve stem 37 is provided with a dash pot piston 40 arranged in the dash pot cylinder 41, secured to the casing 22 in alinement with the valve stem. This dash pot prevents any quick action of the admission valve mechanism. The lower end of the valve stem 37 is provided with a connection 42 receiving a link 43, connected to the pin 13 of the governor lever.
Mounted in the openings 33 and 34 are fuel admission valve stem guides 44 and 45 arranged respectively in these openings and these guides receive the fuel inlet valve stem 46 which is provided with a compound fuel inlet valve. This compound fuel inlet valve comprises the fuel inlet valve portions 47 and 48, which engage suitable seats formed in the housing about the openings 31 and 32 respectively, the arrangement of these valve portions being such that they both seat on the upward movement of the valve stem. The lower end of this fuel inlet valve stem is provided with a connection 49 pivotally connected to a link 50, in turn pivotally connected to the pin 21.
Suitable valve mechanism is provided for controlling the inlet of air to the housing 24 and it comprises an air valve casing 51, having a chamber 52 therein, communica tion with the outside air by openings 53 and 54. The chamber 52 also communicates with a connecting flange sleeve 54 through an opening 55 provided with a valve seat 56. The flange sleeve is provided with a flange 57 secured in any suitable manner to a corresponding flange forming a part of the casing 22. The air valve casing is also provided with a valve guide 58, in alinement with the opening 55, and it receives a valve stem 59 provided at one end with a valve 60, adapted to seat against the valve seat 56, and at the other end a threaded portion 61, receiving a nut 62, engaging a washer 63, in turn engaging a thrust spring 64, arranged between the Washer and the air valve casing. This spring normally tends to hold the valve 60 seated. The washer 63 is slidably mounted in a suitable cap 65, secured to the casing 51.
The device is applied to an internal combustion motor using gaseous fuel and the parts are arranged so that the governor is in its lowermost position, as shown in Fig. 1, when both the levers are down and fuel valves, together with the fuel and air admission valves, are open, the valve 60 being closed. When the motor is started and a vacuum is created in the chamber 23, the fuel together with air drawn past the valve 60, passes through the openings 25 and 26 into the chamber 23, thence into the cylinder.
As soon as the motor comes to speed,however, the governor settles back to its previously adjusted position and causes the fuel inlet valve and the mixture admission valves to settle back to the point where they will admit the proper charge to the motor. By adjusting the position of the adjusting member 19 in the manner already described, the volume of fuel, as compared to the volume of air admitted, may be varied.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. Valve mechanism for controlling the supply of fuel and air to internal combustion engines comprising a casing provided with a chamber for the mixture, said chamber communicating with an air supply, valve mechanism controlling the supply of fuel to said chamber, valve mechanism controlling the flow of mixture from said cham ber tothe engine, a lever connected to operate said mixture controlling valve mechanism, a second lever parallel to the first lever for operating the fuel controlling valve mechanism, and a member adjustable longitudinally with respect to one of said levers and working in a slot in the other for varying the composition of the mixture.
2. Valve mechanism for controlling the supply of fuel and air to internal combustion engines, comprising a casing provided with a chamber for the mixture, said chamber communicating with an air supply, valve mechanism controlling the supply of fuel to said chamber, valve mechanism controlling the fiow of mixture from said chamber to the engine, a lever connected to operate said mixture controlling valve mechanism, a lever for operating the fuel controlling valve mechanism, said levers lying parallel with each other and being supported at opposite ends, one of said levers having a longitudinal slot, and the other of said levers being provided with a member adjustable longitudinally thereon and working in the slot of the other lever for varying the composition of the mixture.
