To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL J. MONIHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Fig. 2 a plan view of the inside of the door.

1 marks the oven chamber. This is separated into two compartments by the horizontal partition 2. A gas opening 3 is arranged in the bottom of the oven, thus adapting it to be set over an ordinary gas flame, the opening 3 leading into a heating chamber 3 The gas passes from the chamber 3 through passages at the ends of the oven and out of said passages from openings 4 into the lower compartment of the oven chamber, and thence by a passage 5 in the partition 2 to the upper compartment and from the upper compartment the gases are discharged through the openings 6. So far as this general arrangement of oven is concerned it forms no part of the present ap plication except that some features of it are I of particular utility with relation to an oven separated into compartments by a partition as 2.
The oven frame has the door opening 7 and this is surrounded by a channel 8. The door 9 is hinged to the frame and the hinge 10 is of particular construction.
The hinge has the upper plate 11 which is secured to the door by rivets and this plate has an extension 12 extending up wardly on the door and this extension is secured at its upper end by means of a rivet 13. The extension terminates in a loop 14 which forms a holder for the end of the door support 15, the upper end of the support being hooked in the door frame when the door is opened. 11 has extensions 16 which. extend under the loops 17 on the lower plate of the hinge. This lower plate is secured by screws 18 to the door frame at the front of the heating chamber 3 and an opening 19 is formed in the plate registering with an opening 19 in the door frame or oven frame at the front of the chamber 3 and this is closed by a transparent closure piece 20. In this way the hinge plate forms a frame or housing for the transparent plate 20 and the flame of the ordinary burner with which the 0ven is used may be observed through this opemng.
The door is formed of an outer plate 21 and an inner plate 22. The inner plate has a bead or rib 23 struck up in it and extending continuously around the sides andtop of the door and a slight distance from the edge. In order to form the corners and thus give continuity to the rib the plate 22 is cut diagonally at the corners at 24 so as to relieve the metal at this point. The outer plate 21 is folded over the edge of the inner plate at 25, thus giving the edge of the door a finished fold as well as securing the two parts together. The rib has a double purpose. It
stiffens the door very materially and it enters into the channel 8 thus making a lapped closure of the door and the face of the rib being round in cross section and the channel having its face formed at right angles there is a space 26 at the corner of the channel when the door is shut and this space assists in forming the seal to the oven, that is to say, with the contact on the face of the rib and the one face of the channel and a practical contact with the face of the door and the outer edge of the rib there is this enlarged space between which prevents a direct movement of air from the inside to the outside and consequently retards any leakage.
The door has a sight opening through it and surrounding this opening there is an outwardly extending border 28 in the outer plate into which an angle or flange 29 from the inner plate 22 extends. The opening in the door is closed by glass plates 30 and 31, the outer plate overlapping the edges of this glass. The glass is held in place by metal rolled strips 32 along the edges of the glass. These strips are held in place by corner plates 33 on the inner face of the door. A division plate 36 is arranged be tween the glass plates 30 and 31. This is formed with a base 38 which is formed by bending the metal upon itself and this crimped portion, or base, has its ends secured under the edges of the front plate. The base has an extension 37 which projects between the edges of the glass plates -31 to a point adjacent to and practically in contact with the front edge of the partition 2 when the door is shut, thus making a closure between the upper compartment and the lower compartment and along the edge of the partition and forcing the passage of gases through the partition in the manner of the structure shown in the Patent to Graves, #1,126,753, Feb. 2, 1915.
It will be noted that where the two compartments are separated in this way there is apt to be quite a difference in the temperature in the two compartments and where it is attempted to use one plate of glass for the entire door opening difficulty is experienced in the breaking of the glass but with the separation into separate plates for each compartment this difliculty is removed. At the same time a convenient closure strip for closing the space between the partition and the door is provided.
What I claim as new is 1. In an oven, the combination of an oven chamber; a door for the chamber having a sight opening therethrough; a partition in the oven chamber; and a glass closure for the opening separated at the line of the partltion.
2. In an oven, the combination of an oven chamber; a door for the chamber having a sight opening therethrough; a partition in the oven chamber; a glass closure for the opening separated at the line of the partition; and a metal strip at the line of separation lapping the edges of the glass and projecting to a point adjacent to the partition.
3. In an oven, the combination of an oven chamber; a door for the chamber having a sight opening therethrough; a partition in the oven chamber; a glass closure for the opening separated at the line of the partition; and a metal strip at the line of separation lapping the edges of the glass on the outer surface and having a projection eX- tending between the edges of the glass and to a point adjacent to the partition.
4:. In an oven, the combination of an oven chamber; and a door for the oven, the door comprising an outer plate and an inner plate, the outer plate being folded over the edge of the inner plate and the inner plate having formed in it an inwardly extending bead adjacent to the edge of the fold, said plates having openings therethrough and a glass covering the openings.
5. In an oven, the combination of an oven chamber; and a door for the oven, the door comprising an outer plate and an inner plate, the outer plate being folded over the edge of the inner plate and the inner plate having formed in it an inwardly extending bead adjacent to the edge of the fold, the corners of the inner plate being cut to permit of the continuous formation of the head at the corners, said plates having openings therethrough and a glass arranged in the openings.
