IMPRVEMNT IN DGQR-LCCKS.
that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had V to the accompanyingdrawing forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents an interior view of the lock as seen from its one side, showing the tumblers as dropped and bolt thrown back;
Fig. 2, a transverse section of the same atthe line w w; Fig. 3 a transverse section at the line as w; Fig. 4 is a similar view to Fig. 1, but showing the tumblers as raised and bolt shot forward; Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the same at the line y y; and Fig. 6 a transl verse section at the line z z.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
t This invention relates to locks suitable, among other purposes or uses, to hotel and state rooms, and in which it is required to provide for the locking and unlocking of the door by means of either one of two keys, the
one of which is a master-key that Will'lock and unlock any desired number of doors or apartments fitted with similar locks, while the other or regular key fits or operates a particular lock, thus requiring a separate or regular key for each of the several locks controlled by the master-key.` The invention consists in a combination, with the regular tumblers which the particular or regular key controls, of tumbler-carriers or distinct secondary tumblers controlled by the master or general key, and operatin g, when raised, to lift the regular tumblers, all of such secondary tumblers being alike throughout the several locks having the same master-key, while the regular tumblers .ofeach lock are different. The invention is applicable to any style of tumblers having the key applied to lift them, nor is the numberof tumblers restricted. Y
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents the lock-case, and B the bolt. C is the key-hole on the outside of the lock or door for both the master-key D and regular key E.
When the tumblers are lifted either key acts to shoot or draw back the bolt, as in other locks, and the stump c on the bolt, passing projections d from the regular tumblers, occupies positions on opposite sides of said projections to hold the bolt shot or drawn back, as usual. The surfaces or edges e of the regular tumblers F are cut or shaped exclusively for the regular key E to it them, and such key acts altogether independently of the secondary tumblers or tumbler-carriers G, although to a certain extent` the latter may move in common with the regular tumblers; but the locking or unlocking of the bolt is effected by the regular key through or by means of the regular tumbler. The surfaces or edges f of the secondary tumblers or tumbler carriers G, against or on which the master-key D acts, are differently out, shaped, or arranged, and, when lifted by the master-key, carry the regular tumblers F up with them by means of lips g on the secondary tumblers catching under the regular tumblers, or otherwise freely and equivalently connecting the two kinds or sets of independent tumblers. It is not necessary however, that the secondary tumblers Gr should have the stop projection d, with which the regular tumblers F are provided, and both sets of tumblers may be readily cut or stamped of the required shape, and be madelight or of reduced thickness. H is a key hole in the face of 'the lock, which lies on the inside of the door. This key-hole communicates with a hollow turning-cam, I, which is held in position opposite the key-hole by a spring, h, to receive either the master-key or regular key of the lock, or any other key that will enter within said cam, and to admit of such keys Withdrawal when needed. This hollow cam, as it is turned by the key, acts upon the tumblers and bolt to shoot or draw back the latter, accordingly as it is required to lock or unlock the door from the inside. Its uses and advantages have already been mentioned in the preamble of this speciication.
What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of one or more independent tumbler-carriers, G, with one or more regular tumblers, F, of the lock, for independent operation by two keys to shoot or draw back the bolt, substantially as specified.
JAMES BRADY.
