Be it known that I, VVALTERC. BnoKwrrr-I, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fostoria, inthe county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boring-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a boring tool and has for its obj ect to facilitate the automatic fastening of a plate or other member to the exterior of a second member the opposite face of which is inaccessible.
Other and further objects of my invention will be in part described and in part apparent as the specification is proceeded with.
Figure 1 is a view partly in section showing my invention employed to bolt a plate to the hull of a ship.
Figs. 2 and 3 are views similar to Fig. 1 illustrating modified forms of bit locks.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which like reference numerals refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views 1 denotes a templet plate formed with a plurality of openings 2. 3 is a boring tool having the squared end l, the boring end 5 and intermediate threaded portion 6. The diameter of the boring tools 3 is slightly less than that of the openings 2 and the latter therefore snugly receive the tools and serve as a guide in the boring operation about to be described.
In salvaging operations considerable difficulty has been experienced in attaching cables and the like to sunken submarines and other vessels due to the fact that oftentimes no part of the exterior of the vessel affords a secure fastening means and furthermore due to the difficulty of bolting or otherwise securing hooks or rings to a vessel sunk in deep water. This difficulty is overcome by my invention.
In practice the ends 5 of the boring tools 3 are inserted in the openings 2 of the plates 1 and the nuts 13 partly screwed down upon the threaded portion 6. The ends l of the tools 3 are connected to any suitable power device for rotating the bolt members, and the plate 1 is lowered in place together with the power device in any approved manner. Rotation of the bolt members when properly positioned cause the latter to bore through the sides of the vessel 7.
The intermediate portion of the shank of the tool is provided with an obliquely arranged annular recess 8. Within said. recess is a coiled spring 9, and also within said opening is a plunger 10 which is normally held in its outermost position, one side of said plunger extending considerably beyond the outer face of the shank of the tool. Within the lower end of said recess is a screw 11 the head of which is engaged by the plunger whereby the plunger is prevented from passing entirely out of the recess.
During the boring operation the plunger engages the wall of the opening 2 and is forced inwardly against the tension of the spring 9 and as the boring progresses the opening 12 in the side of the ship is formed. When the end 5 of the tool has passed through the opening 12 sufficiently far to give clearance to the outer end of the plunger 10 the latter is automatically forced outwardly by the action of spring 9. The nut 13 is now screwed home against the plate 1 thus tightly clamping the tool and plate in place as it is obvious that any effort exerted to withdraw the tool from the plate and side of the vessel causes the plunger to move outwardly to the limit of its movement thus tightly binding against the wall of the opening 12 formed in the ships side.
The plate 1 carries a plurality of rings 14: or other suitable means to which a cable or the like may be readily fastened.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 2 a ball 15 is substituted for the plunger 10 but the operation is identical with that of the preferred form of my invention.
In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 3 the tool 3 is recessed as at 16 in which recess a pawl is pivoted as at 18. This pawl is normally forced to outward position by a coil spring 19 seated in an obliquely arranged recess 20 communicating with the recess 16. The pawl is limited in its outward movement by the shoulder 21. As the operation of this form of lock is substantially the same as that of the preferred form and furthermore such operation being obvious from an inspection of the drawing further description is deemed unnecessary. While I have described my invention as particularly adapted for attaching plates and the like to sunken vessels it will be understood that my invention is adapted for securing plates or other members to any hollow objects or Walls or other members Where the interior thereof cannot be conveniently reached. 7
Having thus described my invention What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described the combination of a plate having an opening therein, a boring tool adapted to pass through said opening having a portion of its shank threaded, means on said tool adapt ed to be forced to inoperative position when said tool is forced throughsaid opening and through the side of a vessel, said means adapted to prevent the Withdrawal of said tool and a nut for said threaded shank.
2. A device of the character described comprising a tool adapted to bore through the side of a vessel or the like, and automatic means on said tool for preventing the Withdrawal of said tool from the opening formed thereby.
3. A device of the character described comprising a tool adapted to bore through the sides of a vessel or the like and means for preventing the withdrawal of said tool from the opening formed thereby, said means automatically operative When said opening has been made.
