DETACHABLE POWER DRIVEN PROPELLER FOR BOATS.
APPLICA 0N FIL 0 FEB 10 m 1 ,3 1 6, 1 69 V Patented Sept. 16, 1919 To all whom it may concern: l

nnromn a. LIBEB'IY,-OF-DET301T, nicnrenn".
DETACHAIPLE POWER-DRIVEN .EROPELLER FOR BOA-Th.
' Be it lmown that l, ANTOINE d. LI ERTY,
a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Mlchigen, have invented a certain new and useful mprovement H1 Detachable Power-Driven Propellers for Boats, and declare the fol ltd lowing to be a full, clear, and exact descriptlon of thesame, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
iii
which form a part ofthis specification.
h/ly inventionrelates to a detachable power driven propeller for boats shown in the ac- 'companying drawings and. more. particularly pointed out'in the following specification and claims.
An application for-patent for this inven tion was. filed August 1, 1914, Serial No. 854l,531, and allowed August 19, 1915.
lit is 'well. known that one of the main. objections to a detachable outboard motor is that it cannot be used in shallow waters,
which weeds are apt to beor in waters in come entangled in the blades of .the. proeller,
en, thereforeQit becomes necessary to make a landin in shallow water, the device inust first be disen aged from the stern that vthe boat may lan or be drawn up on the shore, otherwise the propeller blades are fill ear,
apt to be injured in forclng' the boat over a shallow or rocky beach or-the broken to which it is clamped,
fine of the objects of the-presentinvenoutboard propeller which may be clamped to the stern of any small boat,'but which is adapted to be raised abovev or even with the surface of the water in order that the-boat may make a landing on ashallow beach, or
that the propeller may avoid the weeds which ,would otherwise become entangled in its blades.
Another object of the lIiVQIUL'lIlOJHL'IS to eliminate all bevelor other gears, usually in devices of this character and employed a its construction; an
to otherwise simplify reduceItheicost-of manufacture.
-other objeet is to provide a platform or bed plate hinged to the clamping memher, on which any suitable type of' motor may Specification of Letters Patent.
therefore, is to provide a detachable 4 ends of which are perforated for be mounted and coupled irectl with ,construction. bemg such that a universal joint between t engineshaft and propeller shaft may be dispensed with together with all connecting Other advantagesv and improvements will hereinafter ap ear.
v In the drawmgs accompanying this speci ficationz- Figure l is a side elevation of a propeller ;wheel and shaft with parts broken away,
to the stern of a boat, a fragmen- E, ind cates a tilting platform, to which the engine or other prime mover is secured,- -pivoted at e to the clamp F, by which the device is attached to the stern of a boat.
G, is provided withga hub portion Gr, to receive a tube H, inclosingj the propeller shaft 1.
l is "acoupling connecting the propeller shaft l with the engine shaft D.
d is. a propeller w ieel secured to the outer end of .the shaft 1.. l
K denotes a spider frame having a hub portion to receive the tube H to wh1ch1t 1s secured, provided with radiating arms, the the pas sage of the truss rods L which are prefer ab y three in number. The rear endsof the rods are enga ed with a suitable casting Ml, mounted on the outer end of the tube H;
their. opposite ends being severally threaded -.to receive adjusting nuts It, with the tilting platform lE,-through, or

the device with a frame -bolted the platform and ldll of the'platfonn-E,by means of which the v propeller wheel may be raised or lowered by rocking'the platform and frame on the pivot e, journaled' n the clamping member F. 1? are-s ott pivoted at I? to that F clamp F, and P are adjustable thumb nuts, the bolts of which pass through the respective slotted arms P, engaging lugs P carried by the tilting platform E.
aving indicated the several parts by reference letters the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood.
To install the device upon a boat, its supporting frame is secured to the stern by means of the clamping member F, as clearly shown in the drawings. The shaft of the propeller is then tilted downward until the latter is sufficiently. submerged. It may then be secured in its adjusted position by means of the thumb nuts P or it may be left free to rise or fall as required.
Inshallow water, or water infested with weeds the propeller wheel may be raised by forcing down the arm N, upon loosening the thumb nuts P ,if previously tightened,- thus avoiding striking the bottom or becoming entangled with the weeds.
While the clamping nuts P are designed to secure the propeller at a certain fixed angle, I have found it unnecessary in practice to secure the shaft in this way, as the weight of the propeller is suflicient to keep it properly submerged, the Weight of the motor mounted on the tilting platform serving to maintain the shaft at the proper angle. It will also be obvious that if the propeller shaft is left free to adjust itself to varying conditions it will in many casesbe a distinct advantage, as for example in making a landing at an unknown shore the propeller will rise as the water grows shallow and thus avoid injury to the blades in the event of striking'a rocky bottom.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a device of the character. described,
. a clamping member adapted to engage the stern of a" boat, a tilting frame securedthereto, a sleeve carried \by the frame adapted to inclose a propeller shaft, .a propeller shaft journaled in thesleeve, means for coupling the shaft to a prime mover mounted upon the tilting frame, a propeller wheel secured to the shaft, means for manually tilting the frame and propeller shaft and for securing the same when adjusted comprising a slotted arm pivoted to the clamping member, and a co-acting adjust able set screw extending through said slotted member engaging the tilting frame.
2. In a device of the character described, an adjustable clamping member adapted to engage the stern of a boat, a tilting motor supporting frame hinged tothe clamping member, arms extending rearwardly from the tilting frame adapted to engage and support a tubular member, a tubular member supported by said arms, a casting having radiating arms carried by the tubular mem ber, a propeller shaft journaled in the tubular member, a propeller secured to the shaft, tension rods connected with the tubular member and the tilting frame and engaging the radiating arms of the casting carried by said tubular member, means for manually raising and lowering the motor supporting frame and propeller shaft, and means for securing the motor supporting frame and propeller shaft when adjusted, comprising a slotted bar pivoted to the clamping member, and an adjustable thumb screw carried by the tilting frame projecting through said slotted bar adapted to engage the latter, whereby the: tilting frame may} be held against displacement when adjusted.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
