`Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 16, 1919.
i i, Application led May 7, 1919.` Serial Il'o.` 295,433.
To all whomz't may conc'cm: y Be it known that I, HARRY SPAIN, a citizen of Ukraine, residing at Elmira Heights, in the county of Chemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkwells, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide an improved fo-rm of ink inner wall of which is provided with ,taper-.y y ing grooves that terminates adjacent` the lower end of the neck whereby the stopper positioned therein alone engages the extreme lower end of the neck and is free from contact with the entire surface of said neck, and further, wherein the stopper is peculiarly constructed to permit the ingress of air to the tapering grooves. d
With the above general objects in view, and others that will appearas the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of an ink Well constructed in accordance with the present invention with the stopper therefor in operative position,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with the stopper removed, sho-wing the ink draining grooves upon the inner wall of the neck, and their termination adjacent the lower end thereof,
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view, of the ink well shown in Fig. 1, and partly in section with the stopper removed showing the ink draining grooves in the neck thereof,
Fig. 4; is -a side elevational view of the stopper and Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view thereof showing the radial grooves in the top flange of said stopper to permit the passage of air to the grooves in the bottom.
An ink well constructed in accordance with the present invention comprises a body portion 6 preferably of cylindrical construction as indicated and embodying relatively thick walls to prevent breakage thereof, while the central portion 7 constitutes the usual ink well, preferably of tapering or conical form as illustrated." The upper wall 8 of the ink well is provided with a centrally disposed upstanding neck portion 9 having a radial top flange 10 while the inner lower edge 11 of the neck 9 is abruptly formed, substantially at right angles to the top 8 as best illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3. The inner face 12 of the neck 9 is provided with a plurality of symmetrically arranged downwardlytapering groovesl?) extending some distance into the neck 9 and terminating at their lower ends la short distance spaced from the lower end 11 of said neck so that at said lower end, there is an uninterrupted cylindrical neck portion to the bottle which constitutes an air-tight closure to the interior thereof when engaged by the stopper to be presently described.
The improved form of stopper is more clearly shown in Figs. i and 5 and includes a conical plug portion 14 carrying a cylindrical flange 15 that is adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the ange 10 of the bottle neck while a hand grip 16 is formed upon the extreme upper end thereof. The lower face of the flange 15 is provided with a plurality of spaced radial grooves 17 that permit the ingress of air therethrough into the tapering grooves 13 as more clearly illustrated in Fig. 1, the lower end of the tapering plug 14: engaging the uninterrupted portion -11 of the neck to render the contents of the ink well air-tight.
With the present invention, the draining of a pen point upon completion of its use, is accomplished by passing the same into the groove 13 which will cause the iiow of ink from the pen point to said groove and downwardly through said groove to the reservoir 7 in the well so thatthe only portion of the neck engaged by the stopper, that becomes coated with ink is the eXtreme lower end 11 while the walls 12 of said neck which engage the stopper throughout their length are free of ink coating. Also, by the provision of the radial grooves 17, air is permitted to circulate freely into the grooves 13 so that any ink that might remain thereu on will be quickly dried by the formation of a thin lm and will in no manner interfere with the removal of `the stopper 14. The only part of the neck that might become coated with ink and which engages the stopper 14 is the extreme lower end Athereof and this Vsurface is so small when compared with the remaining portion of the stopper that any formation of ink thereon will not in any manner cause a serious binding of the stopper within the ink well neck.
What I claim as new is l. Anl ink well comprising a receptacle, an outwardly flaring neck carried thereby, the inner wall of said neck having a pluralityy of downwardly tapering grooves formed therein, and terminating at a point slightly spaced from the lower end of the neck, thereby to present a narrow strip of uninterrupted neck. portion, and a conical stopper having a plain stem portion contacting said neck throughout its length, and forming a complete closure at the lower end thereof, an overhanging flange carried by said stopper resting on the upper end of the bottle neck, and having radial grooves in the bottom face thereof to permit the passage of air to said neck grooves.
2.. An inkwellcomprising a receptacle, an outwardly flaring neck carried thereby, said neck being formed on the inner face thereof with a plurality of downwardly tapering grooves, said grooves terminating at a point spaced upwardly of the lower end of said neck to present an uninterrupted surface at the lowen end thereof, and a stopper adapted to be receivedin said neck engaging the lower end of the bottle neck to form an air-tight closure therefor.
3. An ink well comprising a receptacle, a neck carriedv thereby, said neck having downwardly tapering grooves formed therein, the grooves terminating a slight distance from the lower end of said neck to present a restricted uninterrupted lower stopper engaging portion for said neck, and a stopper having a solid plug received in said neck, the said stopper being constructed to permit ythe passage of air into said neck grooves.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HARRY SPAIN.
