To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, (lnoncn G. Been, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of \Vashington, have invented new and useful Lnproveinents in i-lutomobile Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
, This invention pertains to automobiles and has for its object to provide an improvement in brakes and has particular application to automobiles where the brakebands operate over a drum inclosed within the transmission housing, as on a Ford constrnction.
It is often that brake bands have to be re moved. for the purpose of relining and for other purposes. In order to remove and to replace the brake-band, as geilerally con structed, it is necessary to remove at least the upper portion of the housing. By my improved construction of brake-band, the same can be removed and replaced through the normal opening in the transmission housing without removing any portion of the housing. I accomplish my purpose by providing a specially constructed removable ear to the brake-band and attaching a leader to the brake-band and temporarily securing same to the drum, then rotating the drum, drawing the brake-band around the drum within the housing, the end of the b 'akeband having the ear re noved being free to pass between the drum and the housing. In the class of automobiles mentioned, the brakc-drnm 10 is in close proximity to the housing ll, there being only a narrow space 12 between the two. The brake-bands 13 encircle the drum 10 within the space 12. The brake-rod for controlling the brakebands 13 pass through openings in cars 15 attached to the ends of the brake bands 13. When it is necessary to remove the bral ebands 13 from their positions as shown in Fig. 1, for the purpose of relining or for other purposes, as is frequently the case, heretofore it has been necessary to remove the upper portion 11 of the housing 11, as it was not convenient to remove and replace the brake-band l3 otherwise. I have made one of the ears 15 conveniently removable and replaceable by the construction shown in the drawings and hereinafter described so that I am able to remove and replace the brake-band without removing the portion 11 of the housing 11. The ear 15 is made removable and replaceable by providing an open slot 27 in the lower end of the car 15 and placing on the brake-bands 18 'a stud 16 over which the car 15 maybe secured by reason of the slot 27. The ends of the brakeband 13 are curled up as at 17 and a pro-' jeetion 18 at the front end of the ear 14: is adapted to engage the space 19 between the body of the brake-bands 13 and the curled over portion 17. A stud 20 on the outer surface of the brake band 13 resting in an opening 21 in the car 15 serves to steady and hold the brake-bands 13 and the car 15 in rigid relation to each other. the curled over portion 17 is provided whereby a lever 23 may be attached thereto,
the portion 24. engaging the opening 19 in the brake-band 13, the portion 23 extending through the slot 22 and the pin portion 25 adapted for engagement in, an opening 26 provided in the brake-drum 10.
A. slot 22 on rotated once around. This carries the brake hand back to place over the drum 10. The leader 23 is then removed and the ear 15 placed in position byinserting the slot 27 over the stud 16, then clamping the extension 18- into the opening 19 underneath the curled over portion 17, the stud 2O falling into the opening 21. The brake-rod ll can then be replaced.
Another and preferred form of construction is shown in Figs. 8, 10 and 11, whereby a disk leader 29 is secured to the brake-band I 3hy means of a pin or'rivet 30, extending tln'eugh the opening 31. In the opposite end of the disk leader 29 is a pin 32, the end of the disk leader being bent over as at 33 to retain the pin 32. The brake-band 13 is carried "around the drum 10 in the same manner as in the formerly described construe tier, the pin 3-2 engaging the opening 26 in the drum '10 and the ear 15 replaced by ins sorting the slot 34: over the stud and making the ear 15 rigid with the brakeband 13 by means of a stud 36 threaded into a bearing 37 riveted to the brake-band 13, the stud 36 extending through the ear 1'5.
\Vhat is claimed is: 1. In automobiles, an improvement in brakes, comprising in combination a brakedrum formed with an opening therein, a brake-band engageable with the brake-drum, separated and having two ends, a removable ear on one of the ends and a leader attached to the end to which the removable ear is atfiXed and insertible into the opening on the brake-drum.
