SOUND-PRODUCING DIAPHRAGM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed Bay 28, 1917. Serial No. 171,360.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PAUL J. of the United States, residin at Lakewood, county of Guyahoga, and tate of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Sound Producing D aphragms, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a diaphragm for sound boxes for use in recording and reproducing sound in connection with honographs and similar instruments, Where y improved qualities and characteristics of tone, and better results in transmis sion and reproduction, are obtained, due consideration being given to questions of economy in production, cheapness of material, durability in use, and uniformity in results.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a device embodying my improved construction.
Fig. 2 is a'transverse sectional view of the same.
In the said drawin the reference numeral 1O denotes a base, preferably of fibrous woven fabric, which may be either metallic or non-metallic, thou h I prefer to use silk, linen, or the like. l-Iowever, any other suitable material may be used, such as treated skins or tough paper. This base is mounted in'an unbroken metallic ring 11, preferably circular in cross area, though said cross area configuration is not essential. Said base is dis osed in the ring under tension, the body tliereof being carried around the ring, as shown at 12, and being attached thereto in any suitable manner, preferably by being sewed thereto, the threa 13 being disposed spirally upon the ring 11, as best seen in Fig. 1. After the base has been attached to the ring 11, the same is provided.
with a filler or coating of plastic material, which may be applied either by dipping,
molding, or otherwise, so as to render said base resonant, while not detracting substantially from its flexibility or its other qualities which adapt it to yieldreadily to impulses of sound waves. A wide range of materials and compositions may be used as the filler or coating, as for example, wax or resin, or both, in any of their forms.
The base 10 and its supportin ring 11, when so assembled, are adapted 110%)6 mount- RAY, a citizened in any suitable sound box, preferably clamped between elastic supports, whereby the device is capable of slight springing movement, and also is capable of a bodily vibration when the amplitude of nodal vibration of the base is excessive, thereby relieving said base and its coating or filler of excessive strain. A further and important feature of the present invention is found in the fact that the ring 11 is formed of a single piece of material, which renders it to some extent inherently susceptible to vibratory impulses,'thereby enhancing the vibratory results obtained from the base 10.
It will be observed that the base 10 is flat, and that the flexible loops or stitching which attach it to the ring so connect it that there is permitted -to said base What may be termed a piston action or bodily vibration, such as would not be obtained were the fastening means applied to overlapped parts.
y mounting the base 10 upon an inde pendent ring or frame of vibratory material, I eliminate any amplified frictional noise, and provide a separate article of manufacture which can be coated conveniently after being assembled, thus eliminat ing the objectionable features of diaphragms su orted by the frame of the sound box.
aving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A sound producing diaphragm, comprising a ring, and a base mounted within 1said ring and united thereto by flexible oops.
2. A sound producing diaphragm, comprising a ring, and a base mounted. within said ring and united thereto by stitching.
3. A sound producing dia hragm, com prising a ring, and a base of fi rous material mounted within said ring and united thereto by stitching.
4." A sound producing diaphragm, c0mprising a ring, and a base mounted within said ring and united thereto by stitching applied thereto spirally.
This specification si this 26th day of May, D. 1917.
