To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARMANI) H. PEYCKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake Leveling and Release Means, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brake supporting and release means.
One of the objects of the invention is to simplify brake supporting and release Another object of the invention is to provide a combination of brake supporting and release means adapted to meet the various requirements for successful commercial operation.
Generally speaking these and other objects are accomplished by means of the mechanism disclosed in the figures of the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a railway car truck, embodyingmy invention, parts being shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modification of my invention.
The various novel features of my invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring first to Fig. 1 of the drawings, it will be noted that I have shown generally a railway car truck including a transversely arranged spring plank 10, secured to the under and outer sides of which is a double balance hanger bracket 11, preferably formed in a single piece. It is to be understood, however, that this hanger bracket may be made in more than one piece, if desired. The upper ends of the hanger bracket curve upwardly and laterally and terminate in loops for the reception of pivot pins 12 for pivotally connecting the outer end of the balance hanger bracket with a hanger 13. The lower end of the hanger 13 is pivotally connected at 141 to the outer end of a fulcrum 15, secured to a brake beam 16. It
will be understood that this brake beam carries the usual brake heads at each end thereof, said heads being provided with springs 18, which are looped upwardly and then extend downwardly, having their free ends 19 slidably engaging the forward sides of the brake beam 16 for giving the latter, with its brake head and shoes, a releasing movement when the braking pressure is removed.
It will be noted that the balance hanger brackets 11 will act as leveling devices, as well as supports for the brake members, which are supported thereby.
Referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings, it will be noted that the hanger arrangement is the same as that shown in Fig. 1. However, in Fig. 2, I have shown a different arrangement for the release springs 20 each of which is connected to the spring plank 10 and preferably loops downwardly and extends under the associated brake beam 16 and then extends upwardly having its free end 21 slidably engaged and press against the inner face of the associated brake beam for giving the latter a releasing action when brake pressure is discontinued. By means of this release spring arrangement shown in Fig. 2, it will be noted that the brake beams may be caught and prevented from falling to the tracks in the event that they become disengaged from their normal hangings. In other words, the release springs 20 act as a safety device.
The e ment disclosed in this application is particularly adapted for freight clasp brake mechanism, but it will be appreciated that the same and modifications thereof may be used in passenger service.
It is my intention to cover all modifications of the invention falling within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
I claim l 1. In brake mechanism, the combination of a spring plank, a supporting member connected thereto, a hanger connected to said supporting member, a brake member 0peratively connected to said hanger, and means connected to said spring plank for giving the brake member a releasing movement.
2. In brake mechanism, the combination of a spring plank, a supporting member connected thereto, a hanger connected to said supporting member, a brake member operatively connected to said hanger, and
