AIR-GUN DISCHARGE MEANS.

for the purpose intended which will be setby the same mechanism which inserts a projectile in the barrel to be discharged.
I accomplish the above and other objects which will hereinafter appear, by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in whicha Figure lis a longitudinal vertical section through the gun-casing, showing my invention in side elevation, with the parts set ready to shoot. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the gun-casing showing myinvention in plan view as the parts are after a discharge, in full lines, and set for shooting,

Y The base 5 supports the operative parts of my device, and is itself supported by a yoke 6, to which it is pivoted, which yoke is supported from asub-base, not shown. Compressed air, from a suitable source (not shown) is supplied through a'pipe 7, to the interior of a cylinder 8, which discharges through a nozzle 10,,into a projectile barrel 11. Projectiles 12 are supplied by gravity from a chute 13. The barrel is moved from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shownin Fig. 2, tol-oad, by means comprising lateral arms 14, which are connected with a pair of rods 15, which extend toward the breech of the gun and pass through a guide bar 16, supported in a fixed position from the base 5. Nearthe'bar 16 is a cross bar 17 having its ends fixed to the two rods whereby the rods will be moved longitudinally by moving the bar, thereby moving the barrel into contact with the cylinder 8, or
away therefrom, as desired. A. fixed arm 18 is fastened to the bar 17, and extends rearwardly, and to its end a rod 18 is hingedly jointed. The other end of the rod is pivotally connected with the end of a crank on a vertical rock-shaft 19, supported by base 5, and on the end of the rock-shaft below the base is a lever 20, by which the shaft 19, is manually rocked.
The mechanism for admitting the compressed air to the projectile barrel 11, is controlled by the movement longitudinally and inwardly of a rearwardly projecting rod 21, which is made normally and initially to project by a spring 22. The inward movement of the rod 21 is effected by the contact of a rotating cam 22, with the end of the rod. The cam is loosely mounted on a shaft 23, journaled between the two parallel bars of a frame 24. The cam has a half clutch on one side which is forced by a spring 26, into engagement with a half clutch on a sheave 25, mounted in a fixed manner on the shaft. On the other side of the cam from the sheave 25 outside of the frame 24, is a second sheave 27 also mounted in a fixed manner on the shaft, and integral with sheave 27 is a ratchet wheel 28, having a notch which is engaged by a pawl-lever 29, pivoted to the frame 24, and normally pressed by a spring30, against the wheel 28. The free end of the pawl-lever is connected by a wire 31, with a trigger-lever 32, pivoted as shown, in the hollow of a handle 33, on a disk 34 at the end of the gun.
Attached atone end to the sheave 27, and wrapped under it is a chain 35, which is fastened to a spring 36, in turn fastened to the disk 34.
Carried by the movable cross-bar 17, is a tube 48, which houses a spring 37. The inner end of the spring is fastened to a threaded eye-bolt 38, and on the latter, against the end'of the tube, is a nut 39. The other end of the spring is fastened to a chain 40, which extends to and is fastened to the sheave 25, passing over the top of the latter. The tension of the spring in the tube attached to the chain, is regulated by the adjustment of the nut on bolt 38. The pull of this spring is made enough greater than that of spring 36, to rotate the shaft 25 against the resistance of the latter, when the pawl 29 is disengaged.
