To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WARREN J. PARSONS, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Huntington, in the county of Cabell and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to chairs and particularly to collapsible or foldable chairs, the said invention having for its object the pro vision of novel means whereby a back and supporting portion are formed in a single piece of material, novel means being provided for detachably securing a seat in operative position, yet permitting the said seat to be displaced so that it may be nested or folded with respect to the back to occupy comparatively little space when so folded,

the said invention further including a brace or leg hingedly or detachably connected to a member adapted for holding the seat in operative position.

A chair made in accordance with this invention will be found of great utility in a great number of laces, as for instance, on steamboats, at ball games, picnics, in undertakers operations and in fact wherever it is desired to provide temporary seating capacit with the idea of removing the seats therea er.

A further object of this invention is to provide a chair comprising few metallic parts, said chair being strong and durable, as well as eflicient and satisfactory in use.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and a combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a view in side elevation;

or brace, which may also be constructed with a double base like Fig. 4; and

Fig. 6 illustrates a detail view of the seat.

In these drawings a combined back and support or legs is formed of a single piece of material, said member having a transversely disposed slot 10 between the back 11 and the support or legs 12 and if desired, the said back may have an aperture 13 to facilitate manipulation, the hand or arm may be inserted in the opening to afford a hand grasp or arm hold.

The seat 14 has a tongue 15 adapted to be inserted in the slot 10 when the seat is in operative position as shown in Fig. 1 and the seat is therefore anchored or supported at one point through the instrumentality of the tongue which bears against the edge of theslot, which edge constitutes its support. The seat is further provided with

16 and 17 which retain a bail or hanger 18 in operative relation with the seat so that the hanger may support the seat in approximately a horizontal position, yet permitting the said seat to be swung from the said approximately horizontal position to a osition parallel with the back, it being un erstood that the bail or hanger is swingmgly or ivotally mounted in clips 19 and 20 attache in any suitable way to the back 11.

The leg, brace or prop 21 has a plate 22 secured to it by the fastenings 23, and the said plate projects beyond the end of the member 21 and forms a flange which is inserted between the bail or su port 18 and the back, so that the said ba e or support bears against the end of the member 21 and prevents rearward tilting of the chair. A stay chain or strap 24 has its ends connected to the member 21 and the member 12 respectively, so that the outward swing or movement of one with relation to the other beyond a predetermined point is obviated. The tongue 15 forces 21, which may have a double base like 12, into place.

A chair made in accordance with the foregoing invention can be produced without the exercise of undue skill and therefore can be manufactured cheapl and can be folded compactly when not in use. The members shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 may be constructed of metal as well as of wood.

The bail or hanger 18 preferably comprises a single strap of metal bent substantially rectangular, the sides being in engagement with the seat and back respectively and the ends extending from the back to the seat and if desired, the ends may be curved outwardly to afford a greater clearance than would be afforded Were the ends straight, so as to accommodate itself to large or smal persons.

The rear part of the seat or tongue 15 when inserted in the slot 10, in un olding the chair, automatically pushes the brace or JIOP 21 into noper position and serves as a brace to hold it there so long as the chair is in use or unfolded, The brace or prop 121 may be constructed either with a single ass or with a double base like the member 12.

I claim 1. In a chair, a member comprising a back and a support, said member havi a transversely disposed slot intermediate its length, a seat having a tongue insertible in the slot whereby one end of the seat is supported, a hanger extending under the seat at a point distant from the first mentioned member, and means for attaching the hanger to the back.

2. In a chair, a member comprising a back, and a support, said member harm a transversely disposed slot intermediate 1ts length, a seat having a tongue insertible in the slot whereb one end of the seat is supported, a hanger vextending under the seat at a point distant from the first mentioned member, means for attaching the hanger to the "rack, and a brace against which the hanger bears.

3. In a chair, a member comprising a back and a s1 pport, said member having a transversely isposed slot intermediate its length, a seat having a tongue ihs'e'rtibl'e in the slot whereby one end of the seat is supported, a hanger extending under the'seat at a point distant from the first mentioned member, means for attaching the hanger b0 the back, a brace against. which the hanger bears, and a plate connected to the brace and extending between the hanger and back.

4. In a chair, a member comprising a back and support, said member having a transversely disposed slot intermediate its length, a seat having a tongue insertible in the slot whereby one end of the seat is supported, a hanger extending under the seat at a point distant from the first mentioned member, means for attaching the hanger to the back, and a brace liin edly connected to'the back, against which t e hanger bears.

5. In a chair, a member comprising a back and support, said member having a transversely disposed slot intcrmediateitslength, a seat having atongue insertible in the slot whereby one end of the seat is supported and. by which the brave or prop is automatically forced into position when the chair is unfolded for use, a ban or extending under the seat at a point in rent of and distant from the first mentioned member whereb the forward end of the seat is su porte means for attaching the ban or to the back, a brace hingedly connects to the back against which the hanger bears, and a stay chain or strap attached to the support and the braceor prop and of such a len' h as to prevent the sup ert'and the brace em separating beyond a predetermined distance and so as to afl'ord to the chair the greatest degree of stability and equilibrium.
