GAME APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 2, 1919.
Applieationmunevember?,1918. serial 110.262,392.
To all whom t may concern: Beit knownthat LlJorIN F. LoYD7 a citizen of the United States, residingin the clty ofLos Angeles,county of Los Angeles, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Game A pparatus, of which the following is a specification. y
My invention relates to game apparatus, and more particularly to an` apparatus `designed to be manipulated by hand, whereby to lcause the striking of a ballwith a bat, with a movable part actuated by the blow of said bat and moved to diderent predeterrmined positions, arranged to indicate the result of the stroke.
Inthe present embodiment of the invention, the different positions are arranged to indicate different plays'in a game of base ball, and I have, therefore, referred to 1n`y device or game` apparatusA as a Baseballometer.
I have illustrated one practical embodiment thereof in the accompanyinor sheet of drawings, which I will now descri e.
Figure 1`is a front or face view of .the
device yFig. 2 lis a rearview thereof;
Fig. 3is 'atop plan view thereof;
14`ig. 4 is a vfragmentary sectional view taken on line 4-'4 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 2. l Referring now more in detail tothe drawings, 1 designates a base, upon which is mounted Ian upright support 2, provided on its upper end with a platform 3, upon which stands the form of a man 4L. In theV platform 3, in front of the man, is a slot 5, enlarged at its opposite ends, as indicated in Fig. 3.
Mounted to revolve .in said slot ,5, on a spindle 6, is an arm 7 provided at its upper end with a ball 8, and at its lower end with a weight 9, the weight 9 being heavier than the ball 8, whereby said arm normallyl stands in a vertical position with the ball 8 at its upper end, as indicated. Vound on the spindle 6 is a cord 10, having a ball or weight 11 at its lower end, arranged to move up and down in front of a play-indicating card 12, on the front of the support 2, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. Thus it will be understood that as the arm 7 and its spindle 6 are revolved in one direction, said cord 10 will be wound thereupon and will raise the ball weight 11 to different positions in front of the play-indicating card 1Q, depending on the'force of the stroke ofthe bat, hereinafter referred to. By' taking hold of the ball weight 11 and moving 1t down to its l normal position; the cord 10 can be quickly unwound.
The arms of the man form il are jointed at 13, 1-'1 and 15, and he holds in his hands bat is swung downwardly as indicated in Vdotted lines, Fig. 1. At the arm joint 15, `is
Vclearly indicated in Figs. l and Q. A spring `is attached at one end, 23, to the back of .the form 4, and at its other end is inserted through the spindle 18, as at Q11, Fig.` 5.
Said spring Q2 coils around said spindle 18 in a direction opposite that to which the cord or cable 19 is wound, so that when the cable 19 is pulled by hand to move the mans arms and the bat 16,`for Astriking 'the ball 8,
a ball bat 1G. Ahaving at its outer end a conn 'tact pad 17, for striking the ball S when said the spring Q2 is put under tension and will a return Ithe arms and bat to their normal positions, as shown 1n full lines, Fig. 1, when the cable 19 1s again released.
" On the back of the upright support 2 is placeda score pad 25 for keeping a record of the different strokes or play made by the persons using the device.
The use and operation of thevapparatus willb'e understood from'thc foregoing `detailed description, but may be briefly stated as follows: The player takes hold of the ball 21, on the cable 19 and pulls it downwardly. This swings the bat 1G downwardly and strikes the ball 8, giving the arm 7 and its winding np the cord 1() on the spindle (i and lifting the indicating ball 11 to some position in front of the play-indicating card 12.
