IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,469, dated September 17, 1872.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. SINCLAIR, of Woodseld, in the county of Monroe and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Pump, of which the following is a specication: j
The invention will rst be fully described and then clearly pointed out in the claim,
Figure l is a vertical, central, and sectional elevation of my improved pump. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views of the valve-plates.
A in the drawing represents a case or shell, having body a and bottom a', of iron, which are cast in a single piece. B is an inner cylinder, open' at both ends, and made of glass or metal, preferably in one or more longitudinal sections, to allow for expansion and contraction. C is an intermediate cylinder, formed of cement. The cement forms a water-tight joint between the shell A and inner cylinder B, while its elasticity admits of the said contraction and expansion without producing a leak. By this construction I avoid all seams and joints, and form a pump-cylinder which is not comparatively but absolutely water-tight. D is the piston-rod, which is rigidly attached to a double collar, d d1, the part dl slidingupon the guide-tube d2. Eis apipe, extendingfrom cylinder A B G, and enlarged at the end to receive upwardly-opening check-valve e. F is the piston, which is provided with a cast-metal and apertured plate, f, and aleather valve, f' which may be adjusted with respect to one another. Y
It will thus be perceived that the inner cylinder, being in sections, can readily expand,
while the cement forms a water-tight inclosinder adjacent thereto, and an outer cast-iron cylinder in one piece, all applied together as described.
JAMES A. SINGLAIR.
