Description
J. SEIP & H. J. SCHMEYER. Improvement in Separating and Winnowing Attachments to Thrashing-Mac ines. N 131,453 Patented Sep.17,1872 1 UNITED STATES PATENT CFFIGE.
J OSHUA' SEIP AND HENEY J. SOHMEYER, OF MAGUNGIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN SEPARATING AND WINNOWING ATTACHMENTS T0 THRASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,468, dated September 17, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSHUA SEIP and HENRY J. SCHMEYER, of Macungie, county of Lehigh, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grain Separators and Thrashers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, which is a perspective view of our improved combined machine.
In this class of machines, as usually constructed, the fan has been driven from the shaft of the thrashing-cylinder, thus involving the necessity of putting an extra pulley on that shaft, and the shaker or separating table has been vibrated from a shaft mounted on the thrasher-frame, which arrangement requires a good deal of fitting of parts, and it was sometimes necessary to attach an extra shaft to said thrasher in order that the pitman might be made to reach it. It is many times very inconvenient to make these changes, particularly when not within convenient reach of a machine-shop.
With a view to remedy the objection above recited we have made this invention, which consists in making a complete separator and winnower in one distinct organized machine that is to say, in such manner that various operative devices shall be common to both the separator and the winnower, and shall be mounted on the same frame-work, whereby the machine is more readily adapted for use in connection with an ordinary thrasher, as will be explained.
In the drawing, A A are the posts upon which the various parts of the machine are supported. B B are the sides, between which the separating -table is mounted, and which, with the sides 0 of the fan or winnower, form the frame-work of the machine. D D is the separating and elevating table. The front part is made in the form shown-that is, of a series of steps adapted to move the mass of grain and straw forward by succession of impulses imparted to it from crank-shaft E and a pitman, arranged centrally of the separating-table and on the under side thereof, the pitman not being shown in the drawing. When preferred, two pitmen-links may be employed, one at each side of the table, but in practice one is generally found to be sufficient. d are shaking-fingers, attached to rock-shafts d, and operated by crank-arm d and link d for tossing and agitating the straw as it is moved over the separating-table, thereby efi'ecting a more complete separation of the grain. The rear end of the table is composed of openslatted work, which permits the grain to readily fall through to the chute-board of the winnower, which isof the usual construction, and is represented at O O. The riddles of the winnower are operated from the separatingtable by means of bell crank 0, link 0 lever 0 and link 0 and the fan is driven from crank-shaft E by pulleys and belt, as is customary in this kind of machine, and which need not be accurately described. v
Instead of the bell-crank and connectinglinks, and the pulleys and belt referred to, any usual or approved connecting devices may be employed for operating the separating-table and the winnower from the crankshaft E without departing from the spirit of our invention.
F is the straw-chute, over which the straw is discharged as it leaves the machine. G are hooks, (one on each side,) by means of which the machine may be secured to such thrasher as it is desired to operate it in connection bine them and operate them, as the crank shaft E may be conveniently geared to the, pulley on the cylinder-shaft of the thrasher, which is usually employed for driving a separator.
Having now described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein described separating and winnowing attachment for thrashers, consisting of the frame A A B the separator D D, the winnower O G, the crank-shaft E, and the connecting devices, constructed, combined, and arranged substantially as set forth, for joint operation, and adapted for use with and to be driven from a thrasher, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands this 3d day of January, A. D. 1872,
JOSHUA SEIP. HENRY J. SGHMEYER.
Witnesses CHARLES ToBIEs, H. T. HERTZOG.
