Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, 5 designates the a usual holding rod of a loose-leaf retainer which, as shown in Fig. 5 is usually supported' on a suitable base member 6 and slightly: spaced thereabove whereby to enga ge in the; slotsor recessesof a body of loose leaves 7 supported on the base, which base may co'mprise a s'lidable drawer or tray.

My improved backing member comprises: a clamping body plate 8 adapted to engage against one end of the bodyoi leaves-on the rod,- and provided with'a recess 8 receivingthe rod 5 and of such width as to permit transverse movement of the 'plate on the rod. A reinforcing plate 9 of relatively strong and thick metal is secured to the intermediate lower portion of thebody-plate 8" andis provided with a horizontallyelongated slot IOjadj'a'cent its lowerend-that registers with the upper portion of the recess: 9 of the body plate. Thelowered'geoflthe reinforcing plate 9-isoutward1y directed at- 11' to afford a'brace rib on the plate. A spring-plate 12 is secured at its upper-edge to the upper edge portion o'f'the reinforcing plate by rivets 13' passed through all of said plates, and the spring plateextends divergent-1y downward from it's pointof securement. Adjacent the rod 5, thespring plateis recessed from its bottom ed e and-*sa'id recess s provided at its ends wit inward extensions 14 andas of diflerentiallengtlisaf 'fording seats for the rod 5, the seat afi'orded by the recess extension 14 being disposed at a greater elevation than the seat afforded by the recess extension 15, and the intermediate portion of the inner edge of the recess forms a nib between the seats preventing accidental passage of the rod from the lower to the higher seat.

Thus, referring more particulary to Figs. 2 and 4 it is seen that the slot 10 of the reinforcing late 9 provides a sliding fulcrum for the acking plate whereby said plate may be slid on the rod in accordance with variation with the thickness of the body of leaves held in the device, and whereby the plate may be rocked on the rod to assume a vertical right-angular position with respect to the rod, or may lie at an outward inclination to afiord. fingering s ace between the upper portions of theleaves.
