Description

W. H. WILKERSON, JR.
BOTTLE ATTACHMENT.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 10. T9l'6.
Patented Aug. 26, 1919.
W M W WM NTTE @TA WILLIAM H. WILKERSON, JR., OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
BOTTLE ATTACHMENT.
Application filed October 10, 1916.
To all whom it may concern lie it known that I, \Vnamnr H. \Vrnnnnson, J12, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain useful Improvements in Bottle Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to bottles, and more particularly to the class of combined bottles and drinking tubes.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a bottle of this character wherein the contents thereof can be drunk therefrom through a tube which is swingingly n'iounted cxteriorly of said bottle, and is a permanent part thereof, and when said tube is raised, the contents of the bottle is cut oil from the same, and upon the lowering oi" the tube, the contents will be discharged from the bottle for the convenient drinking of liquid therefrom, without the use of a separate glass, drinking straw, or the like now ordinarily used for this purpose.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a bottle of this character wherein the drinking tube and its mounting are novel in form, to render the said bottle useful at soda fountains, and places of amusement having drinking booths, or the like.
A "Further object of the invention is the provision of a bottle structure of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, strong, durable, and inexpensive in manufacture.
Other objects will be in part obvious, and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction. combination of elements, and arrangement of parts, which will be exen'iplitied in. the construction hereinafter described, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 a side elevation of a bottle with the tube constructed in accordance with the invention, showing by Full lines the normal rest position of said tube, and by dotted lines the lowered. position for the discharge of the contents of the bottle.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 26, 1919.
Serial No. 124.834.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation through the bottle.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail perspective view of the joint for the tube, showing the parts separated.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally a bottle having its body 5 preferably made trom glass, although it can be made from any other suitable material. and may be oi any desired shape, provided with a neck (5 having a mouth 7, through which is introduced the liquid into the bottle for the filling thereof.
The body 5 has formed in its sidewall near the bottom thereof a suitable hole, in which is tightly fitted a short nipple S, the latter being permanently mounted in the bottle in a manner to avoid leakage at this point.
On the nipple 8 is swiveled a swinging drinking tube 9 for use in drinking the contents of the bottle.
Hollow circular shaped companion coupling heads 10 and 11 are employed, the curved walls of the heads being provided with openings in which are respectively fitted the nipple and the drinking tube 9. The side Walls of one of the heads are depressed to provide a circular socket 1% while the other head is reduced toward one side wall to form a circular boss 13 adjacent to which is an annular shoulder. The boss is mounted in the socket which is of such adepth that when the adjacent side walls of the heads abut each other the edges of the socket abut the shoulder 14. Both of the side walls oi the heads are provided with alining central openings for receiving a pivot bolt 12, on the outer end of which bolt a nut is adjustably mounted for cooperation with the head of the bolt for holding the heads in abutting relation with each other to allow the adjacent side edges of the socket and the boss to cooperate with each other in guiding relative rotary i'noven'ient of the heads.
The heads 10 and 11, in their faces meeting each other are provided with suitable registering apertures 16. which are out of alinement with each other when the tube 9 is in raised position. thereby cutting oil the supply "from the body 5 of the bottle to the said tube 9, but on the lowering of the tube 9, the apertures 16 will register with each other, so that the contents of the bottle can be dispensed through the tube, which is adapted to be placed in the mouth for the drinking of the contents of said bottle, and in this manner eliminating the necessity for the use of a separate glass, drinking straw, or other like article.
By the arrangement of the socket and the boss as well as the shoulders in the adjacent side walls of the heads it will be appreciated that an effective joint is provided between these heads to prevent leakage of liquids between the heads in addition to guiding relative rotary movement of the parts. 'lhe relatively flat sidewall of the head 11 when in abutting relation with the adjacent relatively flat side wall of the head 10 and when the apertures 16 are out of alinement forms a substantial gate valve for preventing the flow of liquid.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the combined bottle and tube will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended fiexnlanationhas been omitted.
lVhat is claimed is: The combination with a bottle having a nipple carried-thereby adjacent its bottom and projecting laterally from its side, of a two and serving to hold them together with the boss firmly seated in the socket, each of the coupling heads being formed with an eccentrica-lly disposed aperture, the one .in the bottom wall of the socket and the other in the front wall of the boss, whereby the two apertures may bebrought into registration or thrown out of registrationby the turning of one coupllng head with respect to the other, and a drinking tube fitted 1n the coupling head having the boss, whereby the drinking tubeniay be moved to a position in substantial parallelism with the bottle when communication between the coupling heads is cut oil or moved to the position at substantially right angles to the bottle when communication betweenthe cou .plingheads. is effected by the bringing into registration the apertures in the coupling I heads.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
