ELECTRIC REGEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 26, 1919.
Application filed November 14, 1918. Serial No. 262,520.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MANUEL R. RoDRIoUEs, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn of the city of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Electric Receptacle, of which the following is a specification, the same being a full, clear and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in electrical devices, and in particular to wall receptacles or attachment plug fittings and the like, which are adapted to be used in connection with appliance plugs and indicator or signal devices, whereby the latter may be readily and quickly attached to, or detached from, the source of supply. It has for its object to provide an inexpensive and compact receptacle constructed and arranged to be attached in any desired position on a'wall surface or other suitable support, and it consists in the construction, arrangement and operation of parts as hereinafter set forth.
With these and other objects in View, I
4 have devised a convenient, novel and useful receptacle which I will 'now describe:
In the drawings, illustrative of one embodiment of the invention, which accompany and form a part of this specification,
Figure 1 represents an elevation of a receptacle in which my invention is embodied;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a view of the electric connections used in the same.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the views.
In the use of electric utensils of various descriptions, and especially in the employment of electrical implements by persons that are often unfamiliar with the dangerous character of their use, accidents are liable to by suitable attaching elements, as screws 4.,
A socket for the signal or indicating means-an the present lnstance a pilot lamp-and also sockets 6 and 7 for fuses are fastened to the inner face of the closure and have portions extending through the outer face of the same, whereby, by the insertion in the respective supplemental electric lamp socket 3-1 and the supplemental fuse sockets 35 and 36 of the lamp 35 and the fuses 21, the said sockets will be rendered operative when suitably connected with the circuit wires contained within the receptacle.
A switch 9, which is preferably a double pole one of the rotary or flush type, and also the socket or chamber 8 of a preferably surface or flush attachment plug device having spring contacts 33, are likewise secured to the inner face of the closure and have portions. extending through the outer face thereof, whereby the switch 9 may be operated by the manipulation of the buttons 23 and 24 thereof, and the appliance plug 26 connected in circuit by the insertion in the orifice 25, formed in the exterior face 22 of its socket 8, of the knife blade contacts 27 of the said connecting cap or appliance plug which blades engage the spring contacts 33.
Any suitable or preferred means may be employed for securing the said sockets andswitch in the desired position, as for example by the use of lugs 29 formed'thereon and attaching elements, as screws 30.
The fuses 21 may be inclosed if desired by being incased within a cover 28 hinged at 28' and held in closed position by fastening elements as screws 28".
The electric cord 32 enters the receptacle through the inlet 31 and one conductor 10 thereof extends to the fuse socket 6 and thence by the wire 11 to one contact of the switch 9. From the said switch one wire 15 runs in one direction, as at 13, to the pilot lamp socket and in another direction,
at 18, to the appliance plug socket 8. When of the appliance plug socket, the knife blade contacts 27 become energized by the engagement thereof with the spring contacts 33,
and the conductors l9 and 20 of the cord 26 of the appliance plug may be utilized to operate llghting devices, fans, motors, ironing implements, surgical or cooking appliance, etc., at will. v
It will be noted that the parts are so arranged that none of the electric connections within the receptacle can be changed without removing the closure from the body portion thereof, and that when the switch is in the on position and the indicator is inserted in its socket, the said indicator will be in circuit whether the appliance plug is attached to its socket or not.
I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the particular use or the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to persons skilled in the art.
iVhat I claim as my invention is 1. A receptacle of the class described, comprising a body portion having an inlet for electric conductors, and closure attaching means, a cover forming a closure for the receptacle, sockets for an indicator, for at least one fuse, and for an a pliance plug, a switch attached to the interior face of the closure, the latter being provided with open ings for the switch buttons and the closure bein also provided with orifices in line axia ly' respectively with the indicator, fuse and plug sockets, to allow the indicator, plug and fuse to be placed in operative position in their sockets and removed without having access to theinterior of the receptacle, means for securing the losure to the said attachin means to hold the former in protective position to preventany tampering with the said sockets without removing the closure, and connections so arranged that when the switch is in an on position and the indicator is inserted in its socket, the said indicator will be in circuit whether the appliance plug is attached to its socket or not.
2. A receptacle of the class described, comprisino a body portion having an inlet for electric conductors, and closure attaching means, a cover forming a closure for the receptacle, sockets for an indicator, for'at least one fuse, and for an a pliance plug, a switch attached to the interior face of the closure, the latter being provided with openings for the switch buttons and the closure being also provided with orifices in line axially respectively with the indicator, and plug sockets, the parts being arranged so as to allow the indicator, plug and fuse to be placed in operative position in their sockets and removed without having, access to the interior of the receptacle, means for securing the closure to the said attaching means to hold the former in protective position to prevent any tampering with the said sockets without removing the closure, and connections so arranged that when the switch is in anon position and the indicator is inserted in its socket, the condition of the circuit will be shown by the indicator, in combination with means to inclose the said fuse.
In testimony of the foregoin s ecification I do hereby sign the same in t e rough of Brooklvn of the city of New York, in the county 0 Kings and State of New York this 8th day of November, 1918.
