GEORGE BAILLIE, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
LENS-CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 26, 1919.
Application led January 31, 1919. Serial No. 274,264.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE BAILLm, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Iios Angeles and State of California, have 1nvented new and useful Improvements 1n Lens-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to make a lens cleaner' and my invention consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
Specifically my object is to make a silnple device for cleaning the lenses of spectacles, eye-glasses and the like, and to provide a simple means whereby the cleaning or absorbent material may be renewed.
Figure 1 is a perspective showing a lens cleaner embodying the principles oit' my inv vention in use.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan of the inner face of one of the cleaning elements.
Fig. 11 is a perspective of the spring wire frame with the cleaning elements removed.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the spring wire frame is made of a single piece of spring wire bent to form the U-shaped central portion l, the circular loop 2 eX- tending from one end of the U-shaped portion 1 and the circular loop 3 extending from the other end of the U-shaped portion 1. In forming the loops 2 and 3 the wire is bent from the ends of the Unshaped portion 1 around to a circle and the ends of the wire are joined to the ends of the U-shaped portion 1 by solder 5 and 6. The cleaning element 7 is applied to the loop 2 and the clean- :ing element S is applied to the loop 3. The cleaning element 7 consists of a circular piece of soft fabric 9 placed against the outer side of the loop 2 with its edges turned around the wire and a puckering string 10 sewed back and forth through the inturned edge 11, and the ends of the string 10 are brought together near the ends of the U- shaped portion 1 and tied in a bow-knot 12. I
The pocket thus formed within the loop 2 is filled to any desired extent with steel wool, mineral wool or the like 13.
In a ,like manner the cleaning element 8 consists of a. circular piece of soft fabric 14 placed around the loop 3 and held in place by a puckering string 15, and the pocket thus formed filled with steel wool, mineral wool or the like 16.
The tension of the U-shapcd portion 1 is exerted to press the wool faces of the cleaning elements together, and when it is desired to clean the lens the lens is pressed between the rounded edges 17 and 1S :formed by the fabrics 8 and 111 passing around the loops 2 and 3 and then the thumb and forcfinger may be applied to press the cleaning elements against the faces of the lens and move the cleaning elements around the faces of the lens until the lens is clean, when the cleaner may be drawn away. Vhen the wool fillers 13 and 16 become dirty they may be removed and new material supplied. The fabrics 8 and 14 may be removed by untying the puckering strings and new fabric may be supplied when desired.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A lens cleaner comprising a wire bent to form a U-shaped central portion and circular loops extending from the ends of the U-shaped central portion; and cleaning elements applied to the circular loops; so that the lens may be placed between the cleaning elements and the cleaning elements pressed against the lens.
2. A lens cleaner comprising a wire bent lto form a U-shaped central portion and circular loops extending from the ends of the U-shaped portion; fabric stretched over the loops; puckering strings' inserted in the fabric at the inner sides of the loops; and steel wool fillers in the pockets formed by the fabrics, the faces of the fillers extending through the openings surrounded by the puckering strings.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
vGEORGE BAILLIE.
