To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE J. KLING, a citizen of the United States, residin at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey an State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bread-Boards, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in bread boards, and has for its primary object the saving of crumbs of bread, cake and other food, and of slices not immediately consumed.

A further object is to provide a structure in which the body of the structure is detachably held under spring action in a metal gutter so that the two elements may be readily separated for cleaning and when assembled tlghtly locked together.

To these ends my invention comprises the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan of my invention; Fig. 2 is an edge view, part of the structure being broken away and in section, and Fig. 3 1s an edge view of a detail of the body member.

My invention consists of a bread board or palette A preferably although not necessarily in the form of a disk having in its periphery an annular groove 2. Arranged around the periphery of said palette is a marginal stand in the form of a gutter 3 in which the crumbs of bread or other food resulting from cutting on the palette are caught and retained. The gutter element is preferably made out of thin sheet spring metal spun or stamped. Its outer edge 4 is folded over to form a smooth round surface and its inner upper edge is curved inwardly to produce an annular spring member which is adapted to engage the palette closely in the groove 2. The inner edge is bent downwardly to form a depending sup port 6, said support being turned inwardly abruptly to produce a narrow annular shelf on which the lower edge of the palette is supported when the lock member 5 engages the palette in the groove 2. The member 5 is sufficiently resilient, so that it will spring into and out of engagement with the palette A in the groove 2 and cooperating with the shelf 7 supports the palette a short distance above the object on which the entire device rests. Thus the gutter member performs the function of a stand to support the palette above the plane in which the lower extremity of the gutter member lies, making the device more effective in use. The entire device is neat in appearance and sanitary due to the separability of the palette and gutter members. The device is also efficient, the locking feature holding the palette tightly embraced on the gutter member while the latter supports it in elevated position. The palette member is preferably made out of wood or other material suitable for a cutting board. The construction is also simple and inexpensive and serves to prevent waste by saving crumbs.

In accordance with the patent statutes, I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claim.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is A bread board, consisting of a cutting palette, having an annular groove in its periphery, and a thin circular shell formed into an annular gutter having its inner upturned edge extended inwardly to form a spring releasable engagement around the periphery of said palette in said groove wlth the gutter in position to catch crumbs from the palette, and a portion of said shell adjacent to said upturned edge being turned downwardly and inwardly to form an inwardly projecting annular shell above the plane of the lower portion of the utter upon which the palette is adapted to e detachably supported.
