:nx-APPLYING DEVICE To all 'whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, SHERMAN I-I. PXTON, a citizen of the United States, residin at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and tate lan lnk applying roller.
of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Iin Ink-Applying Devices, of which the following is aspeci cation.
My invention relates to ink applying devices andis intended particularly for use in applyingrubber stamp ink to the type carried by either printing rollers or hand' stamps. In devices of this kind commonly in usel atp'ese'nt, the ink applying member" is saturated Vwith ink and when the printing membercomes into contact therewith anexcessive quantity of mk is applied to the type or printing characters so thatV when an imfl pression is made by such characters,- the impression is frequently blurred. Furthermore, an excessive quantity of inkvis transferred to the printed impression and lhence if the objectbearing the impression is handled without giving considerable time for the ink to dry, the hands and clothingrof the person become smeared with ink. he object ofmy invention is triprovide an ink applying member which. w'
' sufficient quantity vof ink to t e printmg member to obtain aA clear cut im ress ion therefrom, so that the disagreeable lurrin and smearing above referred to is avoide which is 'As instances in which my invention may be Vemployed with advantageous -results may be mentioned 4hand stamps used for stampin papers and dispensing devices for gumme tape in which the tape is rinted with the name of the dealer or any4 esired legend as it is drawnout'for use in lieu ofl twine for securing bundles and packages. In regard to the latter device, it isobvious that if the hands and clothing of the purchaser become smeared with ink, the use of the device will be extremely unsatisfactory.
I accomplish the objects of m by providing means which app invention les only a c thin film of 1nk`unformly to the characters of the'printing member so that the ink contained in the impremion becomes immediately intimately associated with the material rinted upon.
The 1 objects and advantages of my in= vention will a pear in connection with the detaileddescri tion. thereof and the novel features embodled in the inventlon are particularly pointed out in the claims.

vReferring to the accompanying drawingsI which illustrate t'wo of the embodiments which my lnvention may assume, Figure v1 is a slde elevational view artly in section of vational view partly in section of a portion of the roller. Fig. 3 is a view in cross 'section of an ink applying-pad. Fig. 4 is a top plan View of the pad.
In Figs. l and 2, 10 designates one of the trunnicns of a roller or supporting member 12 havin a pad let of absorbent material,
ig. 2 is a frontele such as elt, secured around the periphery thereof. 'Aroundthe 4felt pad is secured an ink applying member consisting of a portion 16- from which extend outwardly a multiplicit: of fine hair like members orfilaments 18. his member may be made from velvet,
' lushor other cloth having a napped surace. In use'the felt pad mayl be impregnated with ink, but the filaments or napped A portion will carry only a limited amount printed, that no smearing will occur even when the impression is vi orously rubbed.
In Figs. 3 and 4, 20 designatesthe felt portion' of a pad having an ink applying member secured over the top thereof. This member consists of a portion 2L; from which extend a multiplicity of fine hair like members or filaments 26 and this member may be made from the material previously mentioned. In order to use the ad, the ink is first applied to the ink app1lying .member and worked into itv so as to impregnate the -felt and leave onlya 4limited amount of ink on the filaments. When the printing stamp .is brought into contact with the ink applying member, a thin film of ink is deposited by the filaments uponjthe printing characters. As the ink is taken from the filaments by continued use, a fresh Supply is furnished them on account of capil ary attraction taken from the supply contained in the impregnated felt pad whereby the filaments are always kept supplied with the requisite' amount.
e Aa clear cust impression without -which causes ,small quantities of ink to be Theoperation and advantages of my inventionvwill beobvious from the foregoing description. Not only is blurrin and smearing avoided, but the action of t e laments upon the type characters is to keep them clean, particularly upon their edges so that a clear cut impression is obtained when i terasse thin filmof ink may be applied to the char-- acters of a printing member by contact with said filaments.
2. An ink applying device consisting of a 2@ felt pad Which constitutes a source of 4supply of ink and an ink applying member secured over said felt pad, said applying 4member consisting of material having a napped surface adapted to take up small '25 quantities4 of ink from the felt pad whereby' a thin lilm of inkimay beapplied to the characters of a prnting'member by contact fWith said napped surface. i
lln testimony whereof I hereunto aix my 30 Sl-lERM/AN H. PAXTION.
