WIERSMA. OF GRAND RAPIDS" MxCHIGAN,
.KILMEB, 0F GRAND R AI'IDS,
MATOHED-BOABb i-A'YEIL Patented Aug. 1-9, 1919;
Application filed February 19, 1919. Serial No. 271.956.
To all o'lmm it may conr'cm:
lie it known that we, liar E. Anavoa'ru and Lnuuarr 'Winnmu, citirena of the l'nited States. residing at Grand Rapids, in the eonnty of Kent and State ofl'tlichigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in ntelwddloard Layers; and we do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention. such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usejho same.
l'his invention relates to improvements in board layers and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character, which is especially adaptable for laying tongue and groove boards, or to cause them to properly interlock with each other so that they canbe conveniently nailed or secured in place.
\nother iihject of this invcntiotr is the provision of a device of the. ubove htated character which will force and h'olll the hoards tightly together permitting a person to conveniently fasten them in place without the aid of other persons holding said hoards while the fastening operation takes place.
further ohjeet of this invention is the provision of a boa rd layer of the abovestated character. which shall be simple. durable and i-llivient. and which mavhe lualnlfarturcd and sold at. a comparatively low cos l.--
'ith these and other objects in view its will heroine more apparent as the description n-m-eed.-z. "the invention consists in cer lain novel features of construction. combination. and arrangement. of parts as will be lu-reinafter more fully descrihed and claimed.
For a complete understanding of myin, veution, reference is to he had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a board layer constructed in accordance with our invcntion.
Fig. 2 is a vertical eeti0nal view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a plan view illnetrattng the arm for engagement. with the boards,
Fig. l i:-: a detail Vlt'M' of a locking jaw.
Referring in detail to he drawing; the numeral 1 indi ates an elongated hollow body h ving secured in one end thereof a shank 3. dog 1-? is pivoted to Slhll'pltl'ltll end adapted on which is formed an "anchoring head 3. The anchoring head 3 is' provided with a pointed ortion 4 and ananvil portion 5 so that the llfltl can be readily hit with a suitahle tool for driving the pointed rafters'or like nations of a built ingfor anchoring the body against endwise movement in one direction.
A rack barf6 having teeth 7 formed upon 'rtion into its upper face is slidahly monntedwithin the extends outwardly of then n and has formed upon its eiit s a substantially U-shaped member 8 adapted to form relatively spaced arms" The ends of the arms have formed thereon heads, 9 .in which are formed slots or receswes 10 to receive the tongues formed upon the edges of boards which are of the matched type'or of the ton no and groove type.
The Jody 1 adjacent one end and on the upper face has struckup therefrom relatively simced cars 11 and, 12. The ear 12 is of a greater height than the'ear 11 and has formcdnpon' its edge notches 13. lever 14 has one end thereof pivoted to and between the cars 11 and 12 and has formed upon its body 1 and end thereof pivoted end a. head 15 having teeth 16 adapted to mesh with the teeth of the. rack bar 6 for forcing said rack bar ontwanlly of the the free end of the iever the direction of the body. the lever and has a to engage within the notches -fornied within thorn! 1:! for holding. the leveragainst. upwardly movement. when the device is in use in pressing and holding boards together. end of the do}; is provided with agnard 18 adapted to ri ear 12' to'prevent the dog from. moving of the path of the teeth during the operation of the device.
When boards of type have been placed respective rafters and body and moving dowmvardly' or m the tongue and groove in position upon their it is desired that they 7 be.moverl in the dlrection of each other to e against the outer face of the The sharpened cause. the tongues and grooves to interlock,--
the pointed portion {of the head 3 is driven into a rafter and the tongue on the outermost board is received within the slots or 10 of the heads 9 andby' moving the rec and of the lever in the. direction or th'e'hbgl the. boards will be forced together or m t '0 d1 rection 01 each other causing the t ngue!!! to more within the grooves of the respective boards. At the same time the. dog rides over tinteeth Zupon 'thcgcairand will hold the lever againstrcversc lnovclncnt so that'tho operator may then be free to nail or secure the boards in their proper position. When it is desired to rcmoye thcmstrnmcnt from the boards, the dog is released from the tenth $5 and the lever is swung upwardly "inning the rack bar to bevi'etractcd in thc hon: discngagingtho head from thc boards and the pointed and of the head 3 may be then disvonnmrtcd item the rafter.
From "It! foregoing description taken in connection with the accmnpanyin drawings it will he noted that a device Ins been rovided which is especially adaptable for aying tongue and grdove'bo'ards cithcr as flooring, coiling or side walls.
It is also who noted that the device is simple and compact and can be conveniently used by a single crson when desiring to assemble'or force murh other upon their reslmctivcraftem;
mrds' in close relation to \Vhilc we have shown and described the prufcrrud emlaallnwnt of our Invention, it:
will be understood that minonch'angcs in no claim is .\l( hoard layer comprising a hollow clongntcd body, a shank sccurcd within one and of aid body. a head formed on said shank am having a pointed e'ndnnd anvil face, a rack bar slidahlc in said body, means cnl'rivd by said rack bar for engagement with a board. and means al'taating the rack bar.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in prcscncc of two witmms.
RAY E. AYLWORTH. Y LAMBERT WIERSMA.
