Be it known that I, CHARLES P. BEACH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in thev town of Littleton, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have l,jillvented an Improvement in Gear-Removers, of which the following is a specification,
My pr I lvnt invention relates to gear removers;ai1d has for its object, to provide such a device'of rugged and simple construction which may be rapidly put 1n place, and which, after it is adjusted in position, is locked there. It further has for its object0 the provision of means by which the jaws which embrace the gear to be removed are by the relative motion of the gear and shaft in the operation of the device more closely approximated tofthe gear, so that when the gear and shaft move relatively2 the jaws do not slipv away, but are maintamed in osition. Another object of the invention 1s to arrange such a remover as I have above out- 1ined so that it may employ either two jaws or a greater number, as may be desired. In general three'fwill be sufficient, even for the largest sizes, and this is the best number, as there is then no tendency to rock, since three points determine .the transverse plane of the device when applied. There are, however, conditions in which only two jaws can conveniently be em loyed.
To accom the ends pointed out, I provide a. h b engaging e gear, w ich are ell-crank? levers, and these are hinged to a hub; vconcentric with the hub is a sliding sleeve which is provided with a collar having re cesses or a recess which engages the inner ends of the bell-crank levers, so that as the collar is moved away from the hub, pressure is applied to open the bell-crank levers and when the collar is approximated to the hub, the outer ends of the levers are pressed toward the shaft and gear. The lugs A2 and AI `are diametrically opposite; and in the device here illustrated each of them carries a gripping member, preferably in the form of a ell-crank lever B swinging upon a pin B1. The lugs A1 and A3 are arranged 120 apart and at the same an le with either one or the other of the lugs 2, A". By this arrangement, additional bell-crank levers may be disposed in these lugs and the one in the lug A* may be removed; the gear remover is then provided with three arms, and for the larger gears this is the preferred arrangement. In many cases, however, articularly in machinery which is assem led and where it is desired to remove a gear from .the shaft or to apply the remover without ta down the engine or other machine, -it 1s only possible to find passageways for two ofl the levers. It is provided with a coned end D2 to fit the center mark in the Shaft end, and a squared end D? to which a suitable handle or wrench may be applied.

When the liandle is turned to release the pressure of the nuts upon the sleeve c, the latter is free to move; but when the handle is depressed, as shown in Fig. 1, the sleeve and the hub are locked together as the nuts are forced together and against the outer surface of the sleeve, and move under the power of the screw D as an integer. Obviously other forms of device may be employed.
The operation of the gear-remover is as follows: When it is to be applied to a gear,
. such as the gear F shown in dotted lines in AFig. 2, sleeve 0 is moved down, pressure is thereby applied to the upper sides of the short arms Bf of the levers B so that the longer arms are spread into the position shown in dotted lines; the hooked ends b b of the levers are then adjusted below the gear,
the sleeve c is drawn up until the hooked ends b of the levers pass under the gear, take cone D2 of the screw upon the shaft G, the screw being of course adjusted to the correct distance from the hooks b; the handle E is then depressed,
locking the hub and sleeve together, Whereupon rotation of the screw D will apply endwise pressure to the shaft relative to the gear F, and the latter will be readily removed.
The effect of the described operation is to furnish always a horizontal component of the pressure applied b the screw, in such a direction as to approximate the levers to the shaft or gear so that by no possibility can they slip away from the gear. 'This has v sometimes been eii'ected by some separate/arrangement, such' as a ring to slip over the arms of the gear-remover, or the like, but
these are dispensed with by the arrangement which I' have illustrated.

I claim as my invention: 1. A gear remover comprising a supporting member, a plurality of movable gripping members attached to said supporting ping members and with said operatin member for causing said gripping mem ers to approach each other during the action of said operating member.
2. A gear' remover comprising a base, a plurality of movable gripping members supported by said base, operating means for said gear( remover, and means associated with said-operating means and actuated by the same for causing said gripping members to ,approach each other.
3. A gear remover comprising a hub carrying levers, a sleeve acting upon the levers by movementlrelative to the hub to approximate the levers to a gear, means for locking the sleeve and hub together, and means for imparting movement to the device in' a d1- rection to remove the gear.
4.. 'A gear remover comprising a base, a plurality of movable gripping members pivoted to said base, an operating member for said gear remover associated with said gripping members, and means associated with said gripping members and with said operating member for pivotally moving said gripping members to cause the same to approach each other during the action of said operating member.
