DELIVERY MECHANISM.
1,313,487. Original application filed September 2,6,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. Jnnnes'r,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Groton Falls, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Delivery Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to delivery mechanism, and has for its main object the production of a suitable delivery mechanism to be used in connection with book covering machines. This application is a division of application Serial No. 791,942.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts expressed by the claims, a preferred embodiment of which is disclosed in the accompanying specification and drawings.
In the said drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the delivery mechanism showing its arrangement with respect to the book conveyer.
Fig. 2 is a view of the delivery mechamsm looking in the direction of the arrow 2 .of
Fig. 1.
imilar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different views.
50 is a book conveyer having the downwardly opening clamps 55 for holding the books 52in an upright position with their backs lowermost and withthe cover 1 unclosed. 'The clamp consists of two jaws one of which is pivoted at 2 and is opened by means of the cam roll 3 engaging the cam 256. The conveyer 50 is moved in a longitudinaLdirection by means of the rolls 260 engaging in the rooves 261 of the framework 4 In the position shown in Fig. 1 the clamp 55 is being opened by the cam 256.
Located adjacent to the path of the book conveyer, below the same and extending transversely away therefrom, is an inclined delivery chute 247 having an opening 150. Located adjacent to this chute and moving transversely to'the longitudinal book con-' veyer is a delive conve er 248. In the present instance, t is consists of an endless apron 249 assing over' the sprockets 250, one of which is conveniently driven by means of the ratchet 251 and pawl 252, (the pawl being held in engagement with the ratchet by means of spring 275,) whereby an Specification of Letters latent.
Patented Aug. is, 191a.
1913, Serial No. 791,942. Divided and this application filed August 7; 1914. Serial No. 85'5,646.
intermittent progressive motion is imparted to said delivery conveyer. The pawl 252 may be operated by any suitable means, such as the eccentric 253 and rod 254.
Carried by the endless apron 249 are leaves 255, which pass through the opening 150, and which at a certain point in the revolution of the conveyer assume an inclined position forming substantiallya continuation of the chute 247. The parts are so timed that at the end of each intermittent motion a leaf will be in an inclined position in the opening 150 of the chute, so that when the cam 256 opens the clamp of the book conveyer the book will slide down the chute 247 and one of the leaves 255 whereby its covers will be closed up by the said chute 247 and the roller 257, and the delivery conveyer will thereafter remove the book in an upright position as shown.
. What is claimed, is:
1. In a book covering machine, a longitudinally moving book conveyer, a downwardly opening clamp on said conveyer adapted to support a book in an upright position, means for causing the clamp to re lease the book, an inclined chute below said clamp, an endless delivery conveyer adjacent to the chute and moving transversely of the longitudinal conveyer, and means for intermittently driving said delivery conveyer and causing the leaves thereon to dwell in succession in alinement with said inclined chute during the interval that the clamp is open and the book is released to pass through said 0 ute.
-- 2. In a book covering machine, a longitudinallymoving book conveyer, a downwardly opening clamp on said conveyer adapted to support a book in an upright position, means for'causing the clamp to re- .lease the book, an inclined chute, having an opening, below said clamp, an endless delivery conveyer adjacent to the chute and moving transversely of the longitudinal conveyer, and upstanding leaves on said delivery conveyer in line with and passing through the opening in the chute, which assume an inclined position at the moment of receiving the book and for delivering the book in an upright position. v,
In a book covering machine, a conveyer movable horizontally about vertical axes, a
clamp on said conveyer adapted to support a book in a vertical position with its longitudinal axis substantially parallel to the path of travel of the conveyer, an inclined chute having an opening therein and adapted to guide the book downwardly and transversely to the path of movement of the conir eyer, means for opening the clamp to de- Iver a book into the inclined chute, and a delivery conveyer having projecting leaves arranged to pass through the opening in said chute to engage a book and convey it away from the machine with its vertical position maintained butwith its longitudinal axis transverse to the path of travel of the delivery conveyor.
4. In a book covering machine, a. longitudinal book conveyer, a downwardly opening clamp on said conveyer adapted to support a book in an upright position with its back lowermost and its cover open, means for causing the clamp to release the book, guiding means below said clamp for closing up the cover of the released book as it passes therethrough, a delivery conveyer adapted to receive a bookfrom the lower end of the guiding means, upstanding leaves on said delivery conveyer, and means for-intermittently driving said delivery conveyer and causing the leaves thereon to dwell in succession in alinement'with said guiding means during the interval that the clamp is open and the book released topass through said guiding means.
Signed at New York in the county of New York and State of New York this 6th day of August A, D. 1914;.
