WELDED STEEL BARREL AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AGNAR KAARBO, a subject of the King of Norway, and a resldent of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Welded Steel Barrels and Methods of Making Same, of which the following is a s ification, the principle of the invention ing herein explained and the best mode in which I have conlar importance. To the amomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularlypointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 is a longitudina section through a barrel showing the present construction; Fig. 2 is a section of a detail showing the two halves of the barrel after the first operation; and Figs. 3 and 4 are sections similar to Fig. 3, but illustrating different steps of the construction.
As illustrated, my present receptacle is made up of two half portions 1 and 2, the heads 3 being of any desired construction. Thwe portions are preferably of steel, the thickness depending u on the size and character of receptacle esired.
The two halves 1 and 2 are adapted to be presed or forced onto a reinforcing ring 4 which isv provided with an annular rib 5 against which the ed 6 of the halves of the receptacle abut. is ring is preferably of heavier metal than the two halves and the outer edges 7 of the ring are rounded or turned down to facilitate bly as the Specification 0! When the two halves are assembled on the ring as shown in Fig. 2, they are preferably spot or rivet-welded together at points 9 around the ring as shown in Fig. 3, although this welding is not essential and may be omitted in certain forms of barrels.
After being thus welded together, the ring and barrels are welded along the rib, the extending portion of the rib being melted down to make a smooth. finished joint. This rib furnishes the necessary metal to fill the space between the ends of the receptacle to the desired point. In some cases the rib will supply the entire amount of the metal needed to make a joint such as shown on the drawings, while in other cases a greater or less amount of metal may be used depending'upon the exact form of joint to be produced. In any case, the rib will supply sufiicient metal to effect a fusing 0r flowing of the metal in the various parts.
It will be understood that. the welding is preferably done by an electric arc or oxyacetlene flame and it may be desirable in some cases to add metal during the welding operation.
1 It will of course be understood that the ring reinforces the barrel as well as makin a satisfactory form of welded joint, an various forms of rings may be employed. The radial rib is of importance as it centers the ring and allows the two halves to be forced tightly into position before welding. The ribalso furnishes the required metal for making a smooth joint, and this rib will take various shapes or be of various lengths, depending upon the thickness of the barrel and vthe strength desired.
By the present method a satisfactory and suitable barrel or receptacle can easily be made and a barrel that is reinforced at the center. Any desired types of heads may be used and a smooth fim'shed' article is obtained.
Other forms may be employed embod ing the features of my inventlon instead of the one here explained, change being made in the form or construction, provided the elements stated by any of the following claims or the e uivalent of such stated elements be employ whether produced by my preferred method or by others embodying steps Patented Aug. 19, 1919. I therefore particularly point out and d1stinctly claim as my invention 1. 'The method of making steel barrels and the like, consisting in forcing smooth-walled substantially cylindrical half sections over a reinforcingvring having an annular rib on its outer surface, and then homogeneously joining such sections and said ring by flowing the metal of such rib.
2. The method of making steel barrels and the like, consisting in forcing smooth-walled substatially cylindrical half sections over a reinforcing ring having an annular rib on its outer surface until such sections contact such rib, and then homogeneousl joining such sections and said ring by owing the metal of such rib.
3. The method of making steel barrels and the like, consisting in forcin smooth-walled substantially cylindrical hal sections over a reinforcing ring having an annular rib on its outer surface until such sectionscontact the opposite faces of such rib, spot-welding such sections to said ring, and then joining such sections and said ring by flowing the metal of such rib toward and into homogeneous union with the contacting faces of such sections.
4. A metal barrel or th like comprising two open-ended substantially smooth-Walled sections with their open ends adjacent each other, a reinforcing ring disposed within the adjacent edges of said sections and in snug contact therewith, and an exteriorly projectin rib on said ring interposed between the adjacent edges of said sections, whereby the heating of said rib to afiowing condition will effect a homogeneous union of said ring with said twosections.
5. A metal barrel or the like comprising two open-ended substantially smooth-walled sections with their open ends adjacent each other, a continuous reinforcing ring tapering slightly from the center and provided with an annular outwardly projecting rib slightly higher than the thickness of the sections, and said sections fitting snugly over said ring and against said rib, said rib being adapted to be flowed to homogeneouslyunite said sections and said ring.
