Improvement in Sub-Aqueous Tun nels.
Patented Sep.17,1872. I
Witnesses fanfar- IM. IINN-LIT/IOEAAPIIIO 00- IV. K/OL'EUHNAI? PRO N TED STATES PATENT QEEICE.
HENRY ANDERSON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SUBAQUEOUS TUNNEL'S.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,322, dated September 17, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY ANDERSON, o
I the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and Improved Method of Constructing a Buoyant Submarine-Tunnel, capable of being suspended in the water by means of buoys or floats; and I hereby declare the following to be a full description of its construction and operation.
To enable others skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction, the drawing, with letters of reference thereon, forming part of this specification.
The drawing is a perspective view of my invention.
A A are ribs of T-iron, corresponding with the inside diameter or oval. a a are plates of iron overlapping each other, as in steam-boilers. B are butt joints covered by T-iron lengthwise, firmly riveted and calked. O are also ribs, placed externally, of angleiron, which are stayed by bolts of iron, D, from the cylinder to the ribs, at distances ranging from twelve to forty-two inches, as shown in drawin g. E are anchors affixed from surface through masonry, so as to secure all firmly together. I F are bars of angle-iron, which are placed at right angles with the ribs, and are secured by the rib-stay for the purpose of containing the masonry or ballast G. I then coat the cylinder with asphaltum, b b b, to any desired depth. H is cement covering the asphaltum. I I are eye-bolts for buoys or floats N N, and I I are eye-bolts at the bottom of the tunnel, to which the anchors O O are attached. J is a road- Way inside the tunnel. K are sidewalks. L are stanchions. M are pipes for conveying gas in the tunnel.
I do not confine myself to constructing my tunnel ofboiler or other iron, as sometimes I construct the same with wood, the same as in ship-building, having external ribs, as before. described. By the employment of buoys and anchors to a floating tunnel, as set forth, Iam enabled to sink the tunnel to any desired depth or raise it, as deemed necessary, and to adapt its position in the water in which it is placed.
I am aware of the patents of J. W. Cochran, March 23, 1858, and R. Foley, July 23, 1867. I do not claim any of the devices or methods of construction set forth by them; nor do I claim any of the devices or methods of construction of Dela Hayes submarine railway, as described in the Mechanics Magazine, vol. 43, pages 161 and 325; nor do I claim as new the construction of the shell; but I do claim as new, and as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1 The submarine tunnel, in combination with the eye-bolts I I, the buoys N N, the anchors O 0, when constructed and operated as described, and for the uses and purposes herein set forth.
HENRY ANDERSON. Witnesses:
OHARLEs SHAD, L. ALDRICH.
