Be it known that I, IcNA'rz HOFFMANN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Ford City, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 1Machines for the Manufacture of Paper Excelsior, of which the followingis a specifica-- tion, reference being had to the accompanyin drawings. V
lhis invention relates to an improved machine for the manufacture of paper excelsior.
It is the aim of the present invention to provide a machine, whereby waste-paper of all kinds may be manufactured or cong verted into eXcelsior, which is especially adapted for packing purposes,- that is to say, for packing fancy glass, porcelain, enamel and china ware, and also for packinggold and silver articles, and electric and glass globes and numerous other fragile o1frangi-I ble articles. I
However, the waste-paper that is designed to be converted into excelsior should be entirely free of wood splinters, or any hard substance such as metal or the like, the ob-- ject being to avoid dulling or injuring the cutting elements in the machine. 7
A further object of the invention is the provision of a machine of this kind, which is simple in construction, efiicie'nt and effective in operation, and may be installed in opera 4 tion at a particularly low cost. I
The invention further aims to provide an improved housing, for housing the operat ing parts of the machine, namely a plurality of cutting elements, such asknives, and furthermore, it is the aim to construct this housing so that it is entirely air-tight, 1 whereby the waste-paper will have a free passage through the mechanism, so as to be effectively operated upon, in order to convert the same into excelsior of a character suitable for packing purposes.

While the. structure of the machine present dlsclosed is deemed preferable, it, is; obvlous that the machine when reducedto-a practical form for commercial purpofses is susceptible to alterations, and the'right' to these alterations is claimed, provided they are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combinationlof parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, and claimed.

Referring to the drawings 1 designates a housing which may be in convenient shape or configuration, preferably such as tha now illustrated. The lower part of the housing is provided with a compartment, in which a conventional form of motor 2 is located, and also a blow fan 3, the fan member of which is driven by the motor. The
driving shaft 4 of the motor is provided with a driving pulley 5, which is engaged by a suitable driving belt 6." v
Above the compartment 7 the housing has a vertically arranged channel or cham-ber 8.
This chamber or channel extends substan tially the full width of the housing, and vertically from a point adjacent the compartment. Adjacent the roof of the housing, say for instance, a short distance below conveniently arranged eXcelsior discharging passages 9, which are oppositely arranged, are provided. However, this chamber or channel is restricted from the front to the rear, and rising from the bottom of the chamber are oppositely arranged supports 10. These supports converge toward each other and are connected in any suitable manner to the super-imposed plates 11. These plates are spaced, such space being employed for the reception of the vertically reciprocating cutting elements or knives 12. Be-
low the plates 11 are additional plates 13,
which are also spaced, in a'manner similar to the plates 11, said space designed for the purpose of the reception of the lower ends of the cutting elements or knives. The upper and lower end portions of the'knives are provided with elongated slots let and 15 through which the upper and lower series of bolts 16 and 17 pass. By virtue of the bolts and the slots the cutting elements or knives are suitably guided in their reciprocating motions, thereby preventing relative displacement. The bolts above and below are arranged in suchspaced relation, in horizontal direction, as to guide the knives or cutting elements, in order to arrange them with their cutting edges spaced. The spaces between the cutting edges of the cutting elements or knives are provided for the reception of the waste-paper or the like, which is distributed and forced therein by blasts of air or other suitable means, in order to be reduced to a stripped condition. The stripped condition of the paper should be of such a character, that the paper may be used as eXcelsior, for packing purposes- The upper ends of the cutting elements or knives (the-adjacent spaced cutting edges of which have adjoining beveled parts) are provided with reduced extensions 18, to which links 19 are connected. These links are in turn pivotally connected to the various cranks 20 of the crank shaft. These cranks extend radially and in staggered directions radially from the aXis of the shaft, whereby vertical reciprocating motions may be imparted to the cutting elements or knives. This crank shaft is mounted in bearings of the housing, and one end thereof is provided with a pulley 21, which is engaged by the driving belt 6. It is obvious that when the motor is driven, revoluble movements are imparted to the crank shaft, which in turn impart movements to the reciprocating cutting elements or knives.
Arranged adjacent the lower ends of the cutting element or knives, is a pipe or fine 22, which has a pipe or fine of communication with the blow fan 3, and by means of the blow fan a blast of air is forced through the pipe, whereby the air may escape through the perforations 23 of the flue or pipe 22. It is to be noted that these perforations 23 are arranged in staggered relations with one another. Also it is to be observed that the pipe or flue 22 is so arranged below and offset from the lower ends of the cutting elements or knives and since the perforations 23 (which are elongated) are in staggered relations, the air discharged from the perforations will pass upwardly through the ting elements or knives and adjacent thereto.
This plate or deflector not only insures a proper distribution of the air and paper, but also maintains the paper in its proper relative position with relation to the knives in orderthat it may be out.
As shown clearly in the drawings, more especially Fig. 1, the upper part of the housing is provided with a conical wall26. In other words, a wall or ceiling which inclines downwardly from opposite sides of the housing, the inclined surfaces 27 of which act to deflect the eXcelsior paper toward and through the discharge passages 9, obviously since the blast of air is projected and distributed upwardly. The upwardly traveling air, which distributes the paper excelsior as well as feeding the same upwardly is also deflected toward the discharge passages, so that when escaping, the paper excelsior will also be discharged. The paper excelsior when discharged may fall in suitable receptacles, not shown, and may then be put up in bundles or packages, such as is suitable to be sold to the trade for parking purposes.
The housing is provided with an opening 30, through which the waste-paper may be sure 31.
In operation the waste-paper is passed through the opening 30 into the chamber 8. The blast of air emanating from the perforations 23 of the pipe or flue 22 forces the waste-paper upwardly through the chamber or passage 8, and in between the severing members or knives 12, which, as heretofore stated are constantly reciprocated. It is to be noted that the knives have their cutting edges 12 facing in a direction toward the forward part of the chamber or passage 8. In a machine for the manufacture of paper excelsior, the combination with a housing provided with a chamber, of paper severing means mounted in the chamber, actuating means therefor, and air blasting means below the chamber, a flue below and offset from the lower part of the severing means and in communicative connection with the air blasting means and provided with. means for equally distributing the air and the paper through the chamber and in cooperation with the severing means, and a deflectin means to one side of the severing means, discharging passages in opposite walls of the chamber adjacent its top thereof for the severed paper, and means at the top of the chamber for deflecting the air and the severed paper through the discharging passages. 14, In a machine for the manufacture of paper excelsior, the combination with a housing provided with a chamber, of paper severing means mounted in the chamber,
actuating means therefor, an air blasting means below the chamber, a flue below and offset from the lower part of the severing means and in communicative connection with the air blasting means and provided with means for equally distributing the air and the paper through the chamber and in cooperation with the severing means, and a deflecting means to one side of the severing means, said severing means comprising a pluralityof vertically reciprocating cutting elements, and means for guiding said elements.

In a machine for the manufacture of housing having a chamber, of vertically reciprocating paper severing elements mounted in said chamber, upper and lower spaced plates between which the elements reciprocate, said plates having slot and pin connections with the elements for guiding the same, means for feeding the paper through the chamber in cooperation with the severing elements, and means below and offset from the'lower part of thesevering elements and in communicative connectionwith the feeding means for equally distributing the feeding means and the paper through the chamber and in cooperation with the severing elements. l6. In a machine for the manufactureof paper eXcelsior, the combination with paper severing means, of actuating means therefor, a chamber for the severing means, and pneumatic means for feedin the paper through the chamber and equa ly distributing the paper in contact with the severing means.

In a machine for the manufacture of paper excelsior, the combination with paper severing means, of actuating means therefor, a chamber for the severing means, pneumatic means for feeding the paper through the chamber, and means below and offset from the lower part of the severing means for directing the pneumatic means through said chamber, whereby the paper is equally distributed toward, in contact and past the rocating paper severing means, of actuating means therefor, a chamber having guides for the severing means, means for feeding the paper through the chamber, and means below and offset from the lower part of the severing means for directing the feeding means, whereby the paper may be equally distributed toward, in contact and past the severing means.

In a machine for the manufacture of paper excelsior, the combination with paper severing means, of actuating means therefor, a chamber for the severing means, means for feeding the paper through the chamber, and means below and offset from the lower part of the severing means for directing the feeding means, whereby the paper may be equally distributed toward, in contact with and past the severing means.
20. In a machine for the manufacture of paper excelsior, the combination of a plurality of reciprocating severing elements, of actuating means therefor, a chamber having guides for, said elements, and pneumatic means for feeding the paper through the chamber, directing and equally distributing the paper in contact with the severing element.
