To all whom itvaaj concern: i Be it known that I, ARTHUR G. BILLING- State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flag' Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing;
The object of my invention is to provide a device for displaying flags, more particularly from automobiles and other vehicles,
which device will be simple in construction,
inexpensive to produce, and which may. be readily attached to a supporting part of the automobile, whether said part is horizontally or vertically or otherwise disposed, and at thev same time will support the flagstaif so as to display the flag in the position desired. With this end in view, the invention consists of a flagstaif holder comprising an attaching or clamping member adapted to be fastened to a support, and a flagstaff holder proper connected with the clamping device, said device being of improved form andconstruction to enable the flag to be held in the position desired, without regard to the particular disposition of the supporting part to which the device is applied.
The invention consists also in constructing the fiagstafi' holder proper of a pairv of arms provided witheyes to receive the flagstafi, and adjustable relativelyto each other to cause the eyes to bind on the staif and thereby hold the same in fixedposition.
The invention consists also in connecting the holder proper to the clamping v.device so that the former may be adjusted relatively to the clamping device to enable the flag to be held horizontally ,or vertically or in any other position, without regard to' the particular position or disposition of the part to which the clamping device is attached. I
The invention also consists in the details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings My improved device comprises a flagstaff holder proper 1 and a clampingfidevice,
the latter consisting of clamping j aws2 and a stem 3 to which the holder proper is attached. The clamping jaws are formed with clamping fingers 2 and with attached" shanks 2 which extends longitudinally from the fingers, a clamping bolt 4 being extended through the jaws and provided with a clamping nut so that the fingers may be caused to tightly grasp the supporting part A, and so that the shanksof the jaws may" be caused to tightly clamp the end of the stem 3; whereby these parts may be held firmly in relatively fixed positions with the stem extended longitudinally of the jaws. The inner sides of the shanks are corrugated or roughened longitudinally, as at 5, to oooperate with similar corrugations 6 on the 7/ end of the stem, whereby the stem may be adjusted in the jaws to differentpositions around the longitudinal axis of the same and may be held firmly in its adjusted posi tion. Also the end of the stem within the shanks is widened or flared to-fit the inclined opposing surfaces of the shanks, as a result of which construction the stem will be prevented fromescaping from the shank when the clamping bolt is loosened. j
The holder proper 1 consists of a pair of curved arms 1*, the inner ends of. which are. pivoted together in a slot 3 in the end of the stem, by means of pivot bolt 7 which extends through the slotted end of the stem and the overlapping ends of the arms, and is provided with a wing nut 8 for clamping the parts together in fixed relations. At their outer ends the arms are provided each with an eye or hole 9 to receive the flagstafi 1.0 which is held fixedly and firmly by the arms by forcing them inward toward each other to cause the eyes to bind on the opposite sides of the staff, as shown in Fig. 2, or the same result may be accomplished by spreading the arms apart, as shown in Fig. 1.
In the use of the device, the wing nut 8 is unscrewed and the arms 1 adjusted so as to brin their eyes thereon into registry with each other to receive the flagstaif. The arms are then spread apart or forced toward each other, as the case may be, to cause the eyes to bind on the opposite sides of the staff, and the wing nut is again tightened to hold the parts in their adjusted position.
The clamping nut on bolt A is now loosened so as to allow the jaws to be spread apart to embrace the supporting part to which the device is to be attached, whereupon the bolt is again tightened up to cause the clamping fingers on the jaws to firmly grip the supporting part. If the supporting part is in a horizontal position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and it is desired that the flagstaff he held in a vertical position, the stem 3 is turned around in the shanks of the jaws until the plane of the two arms 1*- extends vertically; or if the supporting part A is in a vertical position as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the stem may be adjusted similarly to hold the staff in a vertical position; or if it is desired that the staff shall be held horizontally, the stem is adjusted relatively to the shanks of the jaws to bring the plane of the two arms l in a horizontal position. 7
The arms 1 may be adjusted bodily together with reference to the stem, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, to hold the flagstaif at an inclination.
Due to the various adjustments of the parts above mentioned, it will be observed that the device is adapted to be applied to supporting parts. which may be either horizontally or vertically or otherwise disposed, and the stafi' may be held vertically or horizontally or otherwise, as desired.
While I h( ve described and shown my improved device as applicable particularly for holding flagstafis, it will be manifest that it may be used for holding other devices or members without departing from the limits of the invention, provided that the parts of the holder will operate and function substantially as hereinbefore described and as claimed.

Having thus described my invention, what.
I claim is:
1. A flagstafi holder comprising a pair of arms provided witheyes to receive the flag' staff, said arms. being'adjustable relatively to and from each other to cause the eyes to bind on and hold the stafii, and releasable means for positively holding the arms fix edly in their adjusted positions.
2'. A flagstafl holder comprising a pair'of arms pivoted together and provided with eyes-to receive the flagstafi, and means for adjusting the arms on the pivot tocause the eyes'to bind on and hold the staff.
3..A,flagstalf holder comprising a clamppair of arms pivoted to the clampin device and provided with eyes'to receive the flagstafi, and means for adjusting the arms rela tively to each other to cause the eyes to bind on and hold the staff. r
5. A flagstaff holder comprising, in combination, opposing clamping jaws provided on one end with gripping fingers and having shanks extending from the fingers, a stem clamped between the shanks and adjustable therein about the longitudinalaxis of the stem, and a pair of arms pivoted at their inner ends on the stem and adjustable relatively to each other to bind on the staff and also adjustable together relatively to the stem, to vary the inclination of the staff relative to the stem, said arms being provided with eyes to receive the flagstaff.
