LUGGAGE-CARRIER.
gineer, have invented a new and useful Lug-1 gage-Carrier, of which the following ,is a
specification.
This invention relates to devices for ref taining suit cases, kit bags, packages,` parcels and the like upon the foot boards of automobiles, upon boards or platforms' or shelving other vehicles or upon'stationary shelving. And 1t has been'specia'lly devised in erder tov provide a package retainer for holdmg baggage on automobiles whlch is adjustable to gripl or seize the article or `articles retained thereinand which is readily positioiied is light in Weight, simple in construction, cheap `to manufacture,l and at the same time is removablel and foldable when not inuse. This improved package retainer espe* c'iall'y useful for holding baggage on autovnmobiles has a horizontalA channeledfba'se of the footboard or shelf., a sliding racked member adaptedto be attached transversely member in said ibase, apawl or catch to hold said racked member insetposition a removable vertical `inner-.member having a 'side extension-of thebase at or'near the inner end'of said base and a vertical outer But in' order that this invention *mayy be i readily carried 'into effect a practical application thereof will now be ydescribed with l reference to the drawings accompanying and forminglpart of this 'complete specification package retainer.
Figuregl'is a perspective View of tWo improved step retainers applied to the footboard ofl an automobile and holdingtwo dotted line packages the left hand one shown l,as secured thereto by screws or the like and the right hand one as held thereon by clips. Fig. 2 is a side sectional elevation of a Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse and lon itudinal sectional part elevations respectivelyV showing the grip or tongue of the inner vertical member in place in the base. and 6' are front elevation and transversev sectional 'part elevation respectively showing a spring pawl or catch for the sliding racked member. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal sectional par'tv elevation showing a jackknife joint for outer vertical member. Fig.
8 is a sectional part plan showing a modiedconstruction of the sliding member and pawl therefor and Figs. 9 and 10 are part plan and transverse sectional part elevation `respectively^of a modified construction of channeled base. showingone form of attaching clip for the Fig. 11 is a detail view base.
The channel 12 has a fiat base plate 13 with flan s 14. having holes 15 for screws whereby it may be secured to a footboard 16 or to shelving. Within thechannel 12 is a slidable member 17 having-a rack 18 adapted to be engaged by a spring pawl 19 having stem 20 with cross head 21 in which is a vnotchor finger holdy 22. .About said stem 2O and between it and the casing 23 is .an expanding spring 24 adapted tofpress the pawl 19.1nto engagement with the rack 18.` The casing 23 is carried on a turn-over portionl 25 of the base plate 13. The outer end of slidable member 17 has `ears 26 betweenwhich lits the knucklev 27 of foldable member 28 and through both of which is y Vpivot pin 29 on which said member may grip or tongue 'adapted'tot into oneof. aj." series oiislots fina raised portion or in a hinge as far' as stop 30 will allow. The
which is ladapted to receive the hook grip 33 onthe lower end. of removable member Vertical members 28 and 34 preferably have each a chape or eye 35 at top adapted to receive straps or cords preferably extending from one to the other to hold packages or l'uggage between them more securely.
In a modified construction the flanges 14 on each side of; channel 12 have recesses 36 to allow said flanges 14. to slide under clips 37 secured to footboard 16 until 'said clips are engagedby a spring catch 38 or the like device on the flanges 14 and so releasably secure the channel' 12 to the footboard 16. Further the member 17 may be modified by having the rack 18 upon its side in which case said rack is adapted to be engaged by pawl 39 having spring 40 which has a casing 41 on channel 12.- Further the channel 12 may have an enlargement 42 longitudinally, (Figs. 9
and l) to provide the slots 32 for the vertical member.
Upon the footboard of an automobile or elsewhere on a vehicle this improved retainer would be in pairs or sets a'suitable distance apart and when not in use the outer vertical member 28 may be removed or be .folded downwardly and inwardly could be arranged atintervals and in series and one or a series could be adjusted as de#4 sired.
When employing two channel members such as the right hand channel member 'shown in Fig;y l, the members are slid beneath the clips 37 so that the clips prevent upward movement of the member by virtue of the flanges 14,. at the same time the spring catch 38 engages one of the innermost clips 37. In this position, outward longitudinal movement of the channel member is revented by virtue of the spring clip, w ile inward longitudinal movementy thereof is prevented by means of the overturned portionV 25 which now engages the outer edge of the support 16, thus the channel member is securely locked against longitudinal movement in either direction. However, it will be obvious that the cliannelmember may be readily removed by disenga ing thev catch 38 from the clip 37 and with rawing the channel member from beneath the clips. It has been found in practice that this form of the in vention is highly practicable as the channel member may be entirely removed when not in use.
i vWhat I claim as my invention and Vdesire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. Anl improved package retainer. com'- prising ,a channeled member having a top or cover plate thereon lformed with a series of slots and adapted to be secured to a sup-4 port, a racked member'slidable within said channeled member a spring pawl adapted to engage and hold said racked member in set position, an outer vertical member hingedly connected to said racked member, and an inner vertical member having a grip hook on its lower end adapted to position in one of the slots in said top or cover plate substantially as herein described and explained.
2. A package retainer comprising in combination with a support, a channel member secured to said support and having slots formed therein, a vertical member on the channel member, a hook on one end of said vertical member andlengageable in any of said slots for sup-porting said member in vertical osition, a bar slidable'in the channel mem er, meanson said bar and coacting Vmeans on one end of the channel member for locking the bar in horizontal adjusted psition,` and a second Yvertical member inged to said bar. 1
3.` A package retainer comprising in com .bination with a support, clips secured to the support a channel member, flanges formed on said member and engageable with `said clips for retaining the member on the support, means carried by said member and engageable with said clips for locking said 4member against longitudinal displacement in one'direction, and vertical members ad- Justable on said channel member.
4;. A package retainer as embodied inl claim 3, and an angular extension formed on the channel member and engageable with one edge of the support, said extension co- .actin vwith said'means to prevent longitudinal displacement olf the channel member in either'direction.
5. A package retainer comprising in combination with a support, a channel member hav ing,a sliding connection with said support, an angular extension formed on one end of the member and engageable with the `edge ofthe support for limiting the move ment of the member in one irection, a toothed bar slidable within said member, a vertical member having a folding connection with said bar, a .second vertical member adjustable on said channel member, and a spring pressed latch carried by said eX- tension and engageable with the teeth on said bar for locking the latter in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to thsspecificatioii in the presence of two subscribing lil@
