ADJUSTABLE EYE-TILTING- DEVICE FOR DOLLS.

Be it known that I, \VARREN G. KELLow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county ofLos Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable,
Eye-Tilting Devices for Dolls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates morespecifically to I a device for tilting the eyes in the heads of bisque or composition dolls.
An object of this invention is to provide a simple dolls' eye tilting device that is capable of adjustmentin the heads of dolls of various sizes. r
A further object is'to provide an eye tilting device for dolls heads in which the eyes may be quickly and accurately adjusted laterally to suit the varying widths of a dolls eye sockets. I
A still further object is to provide an eye tilting device which can be instantly adjusted so as to limit its tilting movement.
A final object is to produce a device of the class described which-may be stamped from a single sheet of flexible metal, which is simple in construction, highly efiicient in operation, and unlikely to get out of order or adjustment.
I accomplish the above objects, by means of the device described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: v

Heretofore, owing to slight variations in the width between eye sockets of a d'olls head, considerable trouble hasbeen experienced by the makers in adjusting the tiltmg eyes so that they will present a natural appearance when finally inserted in the head. The usual method employed was to attach each'eye to a single piece of wire and to twist the two wires together in the middle, and then. adjust the same so as to fit the eye sockets of a dolls head. The twisted wires were then reinforced with a plastic substance, such as plaster-of-Paris, to stiffen the same and also'to attach a weight to the center of. the twisted wires in order that the eyes would be brought 'into the proper position when the doll was either in verticalor horizontal position.
By means of the present invention the tilting device is formed of a single piece of sheet metal preferably struck from a die, the (yes being adjustably secured thereto by means of set screws. From this construction it will be noted that by a slight turn of screws either of the eyes maybe moved laterally so as to make an accurate 'instant adjustment, thus obviating all neces- '9 and 10, each provided with slots 11 and 12 which terminate at the j uneture point of the two arms in a circular aperture 13, the outer ends of the two' arms are each provided with a bearing point or trunnion 14 and 15. The edges of the two slots are counter sunk as at 16 so as to provide seats for adjusting screws 17 which maintain the eyes in position on the tilting device, as will be more particularly described hereinafter. Formed integrally at the juncture point of the two arms -9 and 10, is an upwardly eXtendin arm 20 designed to limitthe movement 0 the tilting device when the doll is brought to a reclining or horizontal position. bearing 23 which is engaged by the. trunnion 114. of the tilting device, while on the side of socket 7 is formed a slotted recessed opening 24: adapted to seat the other trunnion 15 of arm 9, a small piece of plastic substance or wax 25 being inserted in the slotted opening so as to prevent accidental displacement of the tilting device when in position.
The dolls eyes 25 are here shown as hemispherical in form, preferably formed of celluloid or similar material, and painted on the exterior surface thereof to represent the human eyes. The circular edges of the. eyes are bent inwardly as at 26' to form a flange, an a pertured threaded washer .27 being seated on the interior surface of said flange for the. reception of the adjusting screw 17. Seated on the exterior surface of flange 26 is ametallic washer 28, this washer being apertured and screw threaded, as washer 27, for the reception of the adjusting screws.
By means of the above described eye constructions, the eyes may be adjusted laterally in the slots 11 and 12, the heads of the screw passing through the central aperture 13 when attaching the eyes in the slots of the tilting device 8.
From the above description it will be seen that by a slight movement of either eye, the same may be quickly and accurately adjusted to suit the eye sockets of a dolls head, while the trunnions may be clipped off so as to adapt the tilting device 8 for dolls heads of smaller sizes.
In Figs. 5, 6 and 7 I have illustrated a modified form of tilting devic and the manner of adjustably securing eyes on the arms.
In the above, mentioned construction, the
tilting device 30 consists of a vertically disposed bar 31 and cross bars 32 which project at substantially right angles from the vertical bar 31 intermediate its length, the tilting -device being of substantially the same configuration as the tilting device in the preferred form heretofore described-Q The w constructions illustratedin Figs. (S and T a; e of substantially the same configuration as the eyes in the preferred form, with the exception that the ball oreye socket 233 on its rear side is provided with an inwardly extending annular fian e 34, the outerannular edge of a. metal plate 35 contactmg with the inner surface of the flange 34. This plate is preferablyprovided with a plurality of prongs 36, formed integrally therewith which are bent to engage the annu ar llange 3i ot' the eye ballso as to hold the eye ball and the platein rigid relation to each other. Metal disk 35 is also provided with tongues 37, 38, which are bent outwardly as best shown in F G and T o l the drawii'igs, so as to frictionally engage the arms 32 of the tilting device 30. As the metal disk is formed of spring metal the tongue 37 will frictionally engage the arms 32, and may he slid along arms 32 so as to obtain the. proper adjustments of the eye sockets in the dolls head.
By means of this construction-I am enabled to dispense with the slots 11 and 1'2, and the centrally disposed aperture 13 in the tilting device, and also dispense with threaded 'ashers and screws, as illustrated in the preferred form.
\Vhat I claim is;
1. In combination with a dolls head having eye openings therein. of an eye tilting device mounted in said dolls head, comprising a slot-ted bar, the ends of said bar adapted to pivot-ally engage the interior surface of the dolls head adjacent the eye openings, whereby to impart a tilting motion to said bar on a movement of the dolls head, and a pair of eyes adjustably mounted on said slotted bar.
2. In combination with a dolls headhaving eye openings therein, of an eye tilting device con'iprising a slotted bar tiltingly mounted within said dolls head, the ends of said bar adapted to pivotally engage the interior surface of said 'dolls head adjacent said eye openings, a pair of eyes mounted on said bar, and means to adjust said eyes along said bar. l

In combination with a dolls head having eye openings the-rein, of an ey tilting device com prising-a slotted bar tiltingly mounted within said head adjacent said eye open- :ings, a pair of eyes mounted on said bar, means to adjust said eyes along said bar, and means to limit the tilting movement of said slotted bar.
