To all wlwmz't may concern Be it known that we, J AMES B. BARBEE and O'r'ro J. Cross, citizens of the United States, residing at Central City, Gilpin 00., and Nederland, in the county of Boulder, respectively, and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J igs; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to concentrating apparatus and more particularly to shaking jigs. In the concentration of various classes of materials and more particularly mineral bearing sands and gravel, various types of shaking boxes'have been proposed, and these are operated by mechanism which will shift the box, which is usually provided with a screen or grizzly bottom, in a vertical motion alternately up and down, so as to cause the agitation of the particles by the passage of water through the bottom of the screen box and thus facilitate the separation of the lighter andheavier particles in the material being treated. It has also been proposed to give to the screen box an endwise movement to facilitate the separation of the different grades of material, and the. present invention has for an object to impart to the screen box a peculiar orbit or movement in which the box is reciprocated vertically and during the latter operation of the downward reciprocation is given a sudden or quick endwise shake, while the substance is substantially suspended'as a'result of the upward How of water through the bottom of the box.
-Another object of the present invention is to provide a simple, practicable, reliable, and "effective mechanism for the desired movement and control of the screen box.
Another object of the invention is to provide for the assistance to the operating mechanism on the upward stroke and for the full return of the box to the plane of its normal vertical movement upward.
With these andother objects in view will be clear to those skilled in the art, the present invention consists in the construction, the combination, and in details and or.- ganization of the parts, as more fully hereinafter set forth relative to one embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

In the illustrated form of the invention, a suitable tank 2 is represented which may be of various construction and proportion and of any suitable material, this having an inclined bottom 3 as shown in Fig. 1, in which the tank is broken longitudinally. The tank is designed to substantially inclose a jig box 4, the bottom of which may be provided with any suitable screening device, as, for instance, by being perforated or hav ing parallel slats forming the well known grizzly, permitting the upward flow of water and the downward passage of the heavier particles of the material passing through the jig box 4. As here shown, the bottom 5 of the box is inclined downwardly toward one end, which is provided with a discharge trough 6, designed to project through an opening 7 in which the trough 6 may reciprocate as hereinafter explained. The box 4 is of a size in plan to approximately fit the interior of the tank 2 and is provided with suitable uprights or posts 8 adapted to vertically guide in fixed guides or bearings 9, a suitable number of which may be provided at the ends of the framework in which the structure is erected. The guide rods 8 are also adapted to have horizontal as well as vertical movement in the several guides 9, and for the purpose of shifting the box 4 endwise to a given plan wherein it is vertically reciprocated, at one end or at any suitable location, there is pro- 11, the ends of which are pivotally supported in the uprights 8, and at suitable longitudinally spaced points, there are @611 nected to the roller 11, lower sections 12 of a connecting rod consisting of upper sections 12 suitably attached to eccentric straps 13 engaging eccentrics 14 fast on a driving or eccentric shaft 15, mounted in suitable bearings, not shown, upon the frameworln The lower sections 12 of the eccentric connecting rods are shown as threaded and pass through apertures therefor in the roller 11 and adjustably secured in position by means of locknuts 16.
One of the important features of the present invention resides in the provision of means for vertically reciprocating and also for longitudinally reciprocating the screen tank 4 and the vertical reciprocation may be achieved through the mechanism consisting of the eccentrics, the connecting rods 12, and the roller shaft 11 secured thereto and swinging in the uprights 8 of the tank.
It is a further purpose of the invention to provide for an endwise movement of the box 1, preferably during the last half of the downward stroke of the eccentric operating mechanism, the purpose of which is to cause a relative shifting movement of th box 4, while the pulp or solid particles in the box are in a state of partial suspension owing to the upward passage of the water in the tank 2 through the interstices. To secure this endwise movement in the desired portion of the cycle of the box 4, suitable means may be employed and as here hown, comprises a yielding cam or bumper member 20 conveniently secured upon a portion of the framework or tank and having an upwardly extending arm with an inclined surface 21, disposed toward and engageable by a complementary striker member 22 which is shown as secured on a bracket 23, fastened to one of the uprights 8. A similar bracket 24: is secured to the opposite upright 8 and beneath each of these brackets is' arranged a compression spring 25, the lower end of which is supported upon a horizontal member of the framework, these springs having the function of reacting when compressed to assist in the vertical elevation or upward movement by the eccentric mechanism of the box 4:, as well also to thrust the box 1 horizontally in reaction against the cam member 21.
A. feature of the present invention consists in the provision of a novel form of connecting mechanism between the eccentric straps 13 and the roller rod or shaft 11 to permit a free endwise movement of the box and shaft independently of a swinging movement of the straps 13 and to that end the connecting rod sections 12 and 12 are flexibly connected by links 28 mounted on suitable pivots 29 at their ends and passing through respective connecting rod sections, these'links and the sections forming a knuckle joint permitting the free longitudinal shifting of the rod 11 with its box 1 in one direction and are so designed as to limit the return horizontal movement of the box 4 when the rod sections 12 and 12 return into alinement, this being accomplished by providing interlocking or abutting surfaces at adjacent ends of the sections 12 and 12, these ends being shown in the present in stance as complementarily inclined, this inclination permitting the breaking of the joint and swinging of the rod 11 toward the left end, for instance, and prevent movement toward the right end after the sections have swung into alincment, and which determine substantially the vertical plane of reciprocation of the box 4:.
It will be seen from the above that through means of the mechanism herein provided the screen box 1 has an orbital movement which is substantially in a vertical plane and having a motion upwardly and downwardly and then subsequently in a further downward movement, it is given a sharp or quick endwise reciprocation through means of the cam device 21 and thereafter when the upward movement again starts, the box 4 is automatically returned to its normal plane of vertical movement, a point of distinction being that the rate of movement horizontally in each direction is not the same and this secures a better agitation of the pulp or material in the tank than where the two horizontal component movements in the orbit of the box are similar, as Well as greatly increasing the amount of material treated.
What We claim is:
1. In an ore jig, a tank, a screen box hav-. ing guided vertical travel in the tank, a rock-shaft extending longitudinally of and mounted on the box, an eccentric shaft above the rock-shaft, eccentrics having flexible links connecting them to the rock-shaft, the links adapted to lock individually upon movement in one direction, and a bumper for thrusting the box in endwise motion.
2. In an ore jig, a tank, a jig-screen box having guided vertical travel in the tank, and means for vertically shaking the box and imparting to it a longitudinal movement during the later period of its downward stroke, said means comprising eccentric mechanism for alternately raismg and lowering the box a desired length of stroke, and a spring reaction device cooperative during a part of the cycle to shift the box endwise.
3. In an ore jig, a tank, a jig-screen box, means for suspending and maintaining the box in horizontal planes and vertically shaking the box, and reacting bumpers on the tank and box for shifting the box endwise as it approaches the end of its down stroke and while the pulp or material therein is partially suspended in the water vehicle.
4:. In an ore jig, a tank, a jig-screen box, means for suspending and vertically raising and lowering the box, and resilient means disconnected from and for shifting the box endwise as it approaches the end of its down stroke and While the pulp or material therein is partially suspended in the water vehicle.
5. In an ore jig, a tank, a jig-screen box, means for suspending and raising and lowering the box, a bumper and a reacting spring for shifting the box endwise as it approaches the end of its down stroke and while the pulp or material therein is partially suspended in the water vehicle, and yielding bumper springs to assist in elevating and endwise returning the box to the normal position for vertical movement.
In an ore jig, a screen box, means detached from and for shifting the box endwise, and eccentric mechanism for suspending and vertically reciprocating the box and including connections permitting the movement of the box parallel to the eccentric shaft independently of the eccentric straps.
7 In an ore jig, a screen box, means for shifting the box endwise, and eccentric mechanism for vertically reciprocating the box and including connections permitting the movement independently of the eccentric straps and parallel to their axes, and said connections limiting endwise movement in one direction.
8. In an ore jig, a screen-box, a roller shaft mounted thereon, an eccentric shaft with eccentrics and their straps, means for moving the box in a direction parallel to the eccentric shaft, and knuckle jointed links connecting said straps and the roller.
9. In an ore jig, a screen-box, a roller shaft mounted thereon, an eccentric shaft with eccentrics and their straps, means for moving the box in a direction parallel to the eccentric shaft, and knuckle-jointed links connecting said straps and the roller, the knuckles locking when the link sections are alined.
10. Inan ore jig, a tank, a jig-screen box, means for suspending and maintaining the box in horizontal planes and vertically shaking the box and for limiting endwise movement to one direction only during the downmovement, and means independent of the suspension means for shifting the box in that direction only during the lower portion of the downward movement.
11. In an ore jig, a tank, a jig-screen box, means for suspending and maintaining the box in horizontal planes and for vertically shaking the box, said means including knuckle devices for preventing the box from moving endwise during the early part of the downward stroke, and means for shifting the box endwise as it approaches the end of its down stroke.
