DISH-WASHING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 5, 1919.
Application filed September 17,1918. Serial No. 254,443.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that Faun Mou'rn, acitizen of the United States, residin at Newark, in the county of Essex and tate of New Jersey, has invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Dish-Washing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to dish washing machines, and has for an object to provide a machine designed to thoroughly and. efficiently cleanse a large number of dishes at a time, and which is at the same time extremely simple in construction and easily manipulated, permitting its economical manufacture.
Another object of the invention is to provide a dish Washing machine including a container, a basket in which the dishes are laced, and means 'forelevating and depressing the basket out of and into the container whereby to cause circulation of the water through the interstices between the dishes,
1 imparting to the basket a rotary motion, and
means for continuing said rotary motion without vertical movement of the basket While the latter is in a lowermost osition.
In addition to the foregoing t is invention comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter set forth and articularly pointed out in the appended claims. Injthe accompanying drawings in which similar and corresponding parts are designated by the same characters of re rence throughout theseveral views in which hey ap ear;
i re 1 is a view in vertical section o a dis washing machine constructed in acoordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view thereof in top plan with the cover of the container partly broken Fig. 3 1s a view of the machine in side elevation.
With reference to the drawings 10 indicates a tank in the bottom of which is centrally located a. step bearin 11. A pair of 11 right brackets 12 and 1 taxllocated on e' up r portion of the at opposite sides ereof and have their 11 per ends connected by a cross bar 14 havin a central opening 15. A, rod 16 is provid with one and set in the bearing 11 andthe other extended through said opening 15 of the cross bar. A sleeve 17 more One-halt the length of the rod surrounds the latter and extends through said opening15. The lower end of the sleeve is formed with an enlargement 18 in which a nut 19 is held, said nut engaging threads which are formed on the lower portion of the rod. The lower end of the sleeve is also formed with a discous enlargement 20. Resting upon the cross bar 14 is a bevel ear 21 having a central opening through w ich the sleeve 17 passes, a feathez22 being formed upon the sleeve to lock the gear thereto but to ermit the sleeve to freely pass through sai gear in a vertical direction. The gear is formed with an annular groove 23, and a pair of angular plates 24 are secured to the cross bar and have their adjacent edges enga ed in the groove to secure the gear in ace but to permit free rotation thereof. .5 horizontal shaft 25 is mounted in bearin 26, the latter being secured to the cross or. A bevel pinion 27 mounted on the shaft 25 engages the gear '21 to transmit motion thereto. A
In operation, the basket is rested upon one of the platforms 85 and, filled 'wlth the dishes to be cleansed. The sleeve 17 should be elevated so as to di w. the disk 20 at a, ,point coincident with e u per edge ofthe hapdle 30 is now a result mos tion is transmitted-through the gears 29 and 28 to shaft 25, thence throu h gears 27 and 21 to the sleeve 17 rotatin t e same. It will be obvious that as the 16 is fixed and in threaded connection with the sleeve, the latter will descend during rotation until the disk 20 rests upon the step bearing 11. At
itsel from the threads of the rod 16 and continued rotation of the handle 30 will cause the sleeve and basket to rotate without moving vertically. The circulation thus set up in the fluid contained in the tank will thoroughly cleanse the dishes. The water may be supplied through the hose 33. When the operation is completed the sleeve 17 is slightly elevated to cause the nut 19 to reengage the threads of the rod 16, whereupon a reverse rotation of the handle 30 will cause the sleeve and basket to ascend. It will be apparent that upon engagement of the collar 38 with the cover plate 31, the latter will be lifted thus permitting the basket to be transferred from the disk 20 to one of the platforms 35.
While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or other- WISB altering-the arrangement of the correlated parts, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what this fpoint the nut 19 will have disengaged.
I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A dish washing machine including a tank, a threaded upright, a container havln threaded connection with the upright, an means for rotating the container whereby to cause the latter to ascend or descend, the threads of the upright terminating at a point above the lower end thereof so that the container may rotate without an accompanying vertical movement when the container is in a lowermost position.
'2. A dish washing machine including a tank, a threaded upright mounted therein, a sleeve embracing the upright, a threaded connection between the sleeve and rod, a disk on the sleeve, a dish container mounted on the disk, a collar mounted on the sleeve, a cover for the tank, brackets secured to the tank, a cross bar connecting the brackets and having an opening to receive the sleeve, a bevel gear mounted on the cross bar, a splined connection between the gear and sleeve, a shaft journaled on the cross bar, a bevel pinion on the shaft meshing with the gear, a spur car on the shaft, a second spur gear journa ed on one bracket meshing with the first spur gear, and means for rotating the second spur fgear. In testimon whereo I aflix my signature in presence 0 two witnesses.
