Be it known that I, CLARENCE A. SHALER,
a citizen of 'the United States,` residin at' 'Wauplun countyof Fond du Lac, and tate of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vulcanizing Apparatus, of
' which the following is a. speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in vu-lcanizing apparatus. 4
The object of my invention is to provide al simple, compact and inexpensive form of l vulcanizer .of that type in which the heater is inclosed and the articles to be vulcaniz'ed are fully protected from direct contact wlth the` flame and gases of combustion. Also to provide a vulcanizer of the described classv in which a measured chargev of combustible 1, with the clamping lever illustrated in ful may be inserted in the form of a cartridgev and in which combustion will be so regulated that the hea't of the vulcanizing survface will be gradually raised to the desired temperature and maintained at a vulcanlzing temperature for a suiiicient period to effeet a thorough vulcanization without further attention on the 'part of the user, the heat being then reduced by reason of the exhaustion of the fuel supply.

The lower end of the casing is provided with foot pieces 4 and 5, and the upper end is provided with a forked projection 6. tween the arms of the fork 6 with the head l1 of the bolt'engaging said arms. A thumb' portion of t e lever 7 by means of a headed pin or bolt 16. The outer surface of the plate 15 is provided with a rounded boss 17 through which the swiveled bolt passes, whereby said plate is free to oscillate in all directions in rocker bearing contact with the lever 7. The inner surface of the plate 1s recessed to receive a pad 18, which conforms substantially in contour to the contour of the vulcanizing surface 2. This pad is adapted to be clamped against the vulcanizing surface 2, or against an article engaged between it and said vullcanizing surface by means of the lever 7, bolt 10 and thumb nut 12. When it is desired to release the article thus clamped against the vulcanizin surface, the thumb nut 12 is loosened suiiclently 4to allow the bolt 10 to swing upwardly from the manipulation of the bolt 10 into and out of the position between the forked arms in which the bolt is illustrated in Fig. 2.
The plate 15 is also provided with propasses, is elongated vertically to facilitate jecting ears 20 and 21 respectively, these ears belng connected with the edge margins of the plate. These ears are apertures or forked to receive bolts 23 connected with a chain 24 adapted to pass around the inflated tire casing and the rim of a wheel, whereby the vulcanizermay be clamped in position with its concave face bearing upon the casing by means of thumb nuts 25.
The walls provided :with the vulcanizin faces are nterio'rly connected with 'eac other by suitably apertured partitions 27 and 28. 'These partitions not only serve as baiiles to distribute the llame and products of combustion within the casing, but also` transmit heat to the vulcanizing surfaces, the bailes being integrally connected with the casing walls directly o posite the vulcanizing surfaces. The ba e walls are also suitably spaced so that the heat delivered to the vulcanizin will be properly istribu-ted. Apertures 29 in these baille walls are of such size as to surfaces by conduction` permit delivery of the smoke and gases of combustion to one or more outlets 30 at the upper end of the casing and also to regulate or control the combustion, since the baffle lplates or partitions will serve as non-adjustable dampers.
A cylindrical cartridge is adapted to be inserted into the casing through an aperture 36 formed in one edge wall of the casing. This cartridge is provided with a handle 37 composed of non-heat conducting material. 'llhe body of the cartridge comprises a perforate cylinder 35 filled with lnon-combustible absorbent material 38. 'llhis material preferably comprises a body of asbestos wicking, which, when the cartridge is insei-ted 1n a quantity of liquid fuel, will absorb a sufficient quantity of fuel to main tain combustion for a definite interval under the conditions existing within the casing. It will be observed that the casing is provided with a draft aperture 40 underneath the cartridge and with additional draft apertures il in the edge margins above the cartridge. The cartridge is also loosely fitted to the aperture 36 so that a small quantity of air is permitted to enter through this aperture. i
ln operation, the vulcanizer being clamped upon the article to be repaired, the cartridge is removed from the vulcanizer casing and immersed in liquid fuel, the filling 38 becoming immediately saturated therewith. rllhe cartridge is then re-inserted in the casing through-the aperture 36 to the position in which it is illustrated in Fig. 1. The combustible may then be readily ignited by holding a lighted match underneath the aperture 40. The liquid will burn slowly for a short period during which the temperature of the casing will be gradually raised until the heat of the cartridge becomes sufficient to vaporize the liquid contained therein. ln the meantime, a draft will be created within the casing and currents of air will enter the casing rapidly through the aperture 41, so that the vaporized combustible will be supplied with suicient oxygen to maintain suciently perfect combustion within the casing and to confine the dame to the interior of the casing instead of having the gases partially oxidized above the casing with a resulting exposed dame.
The size of the cartridge will of course depend upon the character or density of the liquid fuel employed. The cartridge will be of such size as to maintain combustion for the desired period, the fuel becoming exhausted when the heat has been maintained long enough to effect a proper vulcanization.
l It will of course be'understood that the device is intended for repairing cuts and punctures 1n vehicle tires and tire-casings, and that the vulcanizmg operations hereln referred to are such operations as are performed for repair purposes.
l claim- 1. A. vulcanizer including a heater casing having one side face adapted to receive the article to be vulcanized, in combination with a clamping member adapted to engage and hold the article against said face, an operating lever pivoted to the lower end of the casing, and loosely connected intermediate of its ends with said clamping member, a clamping bolt adjustably secured to the upper end of the lever and adapted to removably engage with the upperend of the casing, and means for maintaining combustion for a limited period in the lower portion of the casing.
2. A vulcanizer including a heater casing having one side face adapted to receive the article to be vulcanized, in combination with a clamping member adapted to engage and hold the article against said face, an operating lever pivoted to the lower end of the casing, and loosely connected intermediate of its ends with said clamping member, a clamping bolt adjustably secured to the upper end of the lever and adapted to removably engage with the upper end of the casing, said upper end of the casing having a forked projection adapted to loosely receive the vbolt between the arms thereof, and means for maintaining combustion for a limited period in the lower portion of the casing.

A' vulcanizer, including the combination of a casing having a dat Side wall, and another side wall having a vertically eX- tending concave channel, a lever pivotally connected with the lower end of the casing and extending vertically along the dat side wall, a clampln plate loosely connected with the lever an wall, adjustable clamping connections between the lever and the casing, and means for maintaining combustion for limited periods in the lower end of' said casing.
4. A vulcanizer, including the combination of a casing having a dat side wall, and another side wall having a vertically extending concave channel, a lever pivotally connected with the lower end of the casing and extending vertically along the flat side wall, a clamping plate loosely connected with the lever and adapted to engage a rubber tube between it and said flat side wall, adjustable clamping connections between the lever and the casing, and means for maintaining combustion for limited periods in the lower end of said casing, said casing being vented in its upper portions and having heat conveying baffles connecting said side walls and yadapted to conduct heat of combustion to the respective vulcanizing -faces 5.
