Application filed October aiemgs riel No. 123,572. Rene-wed Jaimar e, 1919] serial no. 270,444
To allwhont it may concern: i
Be it known that I, WILLIAM STANISIQAU' BILEOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklilnin the county of Crawford, State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Drill Connection; and I do hereby declare the following tobe afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilledin the arttojwhioh it appertains to make and use the same. 5
The present invention relates to a quickly detachable joint forconnectingl drills to thread bars or feed screws, the object ofthe inventionheing to provide a connection of this kind which embodies" novel featuresof construction whereby the drill can be quickly placed in position or removed therefrom, and which admits of the drill being pulled from the drill hole without thens'eofa sniall pin such as is ordinarily used.
Further objects of themenuoneare to provide a device ofthis character which is comparatively simple and inexpensive inits construction, which can be easily and quickly manipulated to place the drill in positionor remove it therefrom, which securely locks the drill in position when the tool is in use, and which provides a secure connectionbetween all of thepartsQfor pulling the drill from the drill hole. f
With these and otherobjects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novelfeatures thereof being pointed out in the appendedfclaims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to he had tothe following description and accompanying drawing, in which:- H
Figure 1 is a side elevation ofa portion of a thread bar and drill, said membersbeing connected by a quickly detachahle joint constructed in accordance with the invention.m 1- 1 Fig. 2 is a similar view, taken at right angles to Fig. 1, parts being broken away and shown in section to bringyout moreclearly the manner of constructingandrnounting the latch. i Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of,
polygonal head and latch at the endefthe thread bar or feed screw.
Fig, 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 4r-"-*-4ir of Fi e 2.
Fig. is a diatail sectienal view through;
the head at the end of the thread bar, shew-- 1 ing a modifiedconstruction of thelatch;
Corresponding and like partsare referred to in the following description and indicated {1Ii all the views of the drawingsby the same reference characters. i
'hodin ent" of the invention, ithefnumeral 1 designates the outer end of a feed screw br Specifi ally describing the present emthread bar which may beof the conventional construction, said feed screw terminating in an enlarged clygonal head 2 which tapers *sliglitly toward the free end thereof. A 10a "*gitudinally extending recess 3' is previded in one side of the head 2, and a latch lever-4 "of drill 8f 1 This drillniay be detachahly conarranged within recess," saidflatch lever being formed with a nose 5 which is nected to the socket by any well-known form i of j oint, suchas tliatindicated at ,9, the ends being secured together in operative position by a transverse pin 10?. 1
The socket 7 has the same shape or configuration as the head 2 of the feed screw 1, and is flared or tapered in a corresponding :manner, so as to accurately receive the same.
The latchlever lis pivotally mounted at a point toward the outer end of the head 2 upon a transverse pin Q10, the pivot end of the latchlever being formed with an inwardly extending arrrr ll which is adapted to ngage a slioulder 12 tollimit the outward swlnging movement of the lever and tofrelieve the pivot pin l0ofpossihle thrust when usingthe tool. Aspringlel is rivetedto the hack of the latch lever 4;"and bears frictionallyagainst the base of therecess 3 so as to normally tend ,to swing thelatch lever outwardly into operativeposition, while an outwardlycurved fingerf piece 4 at the swing- ,ing (and ofthe latch leverprojects from the recess 3 and provides a means for manipulating the latch lever to disengage the socket Tfrom the head 2. Anotchl lrisiprovided in the. entered elsof thelatch lever 4, said notch being su fieierltly deeplto receive transverse pin 15'. This *piIi serves both as a top to ,l m tt w rd sw i ewl jment vof the latch lever, and also tends te lieve the pivot pin 10 of excessive longitudi nal thrust when pulling the drill from the drill hole. This construction admits of the headand socket being quickly and securely fastened together, and. there is no di'liiculty strip of spring mateiial' having one end thereofsecuredto the head by a suitable screw ltl, while the opposite end thereof ter- ..minates inalinger piece 4%.
