raise Specification of Letters Patent.
l SM'USSEN, or CLEVELAND, oruo.
t KER.
Patented Aug 5, 119.,
Application filed March 2 6, 19191 Serial No. 285,192;
To all :whom it may concern Be it known that T, CHRISTIAN Easiness-- sen, citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in-the county-of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Electric-Circuit Makers and Breakers, of which the following is a specification. a This invention relates to an improvement 1n electriccircuit makers and breakers, and
more particularly in the electrical contact finger shown and described in my lletters Patent No. 1,276,110, dated August 20, 1918. Tn the present device 1- seek toi'nake a simple organization of parts adapted to at ford a rotatable union which may be conveniently assembled and disassembled while eflecting a secure and safe locking of the bracket 2 upon which afinger. 3 is rotatably mounted and adapted to oscillate under the tension of a coiled spring 4. The outer end of finger 3 is equipped with a replaceable contact member 5 locked in place by a nut 6, and a set screw 7 mounted upon the finger limits the movement of the finger'in one di'. rection. The parts described, are in general substantially the same as shown in my patented structure, but the mode of' uniting the parts is quite difl'erent and more desirable and eflicient. Thus, bracket 2 comprises a vertical flange 8 having an integral hub 9 with a central screw-threaded Opening 10-adapted to receive a pivot screw 11,
and finger 3 comprises a round barrel on base cap 12 adapted to inclose hub 9 and spring 4 and having a countersunk opening in itsflat side wall 14 adapted to seat the flaring head 15 of screw 11. A short straight cylindrical shoulder portion 16 on screw 11 at the base of its flaring head 16 is also enturning.
posite endsbent and engaged with the flange.
gaged with wall 1 1 to provide an additional ournal bearing, and a short'annular shoulder 17- upon one side of bracket flange 8 is also engaged within the opposite open side of the barrel or cap to provide a journal bearing of substantial diameter but not of any great length so as to promote free The coiled spring 4 has its op- 8 and wall 14:, respectively, to exert a constant tension upon the finger to hold it to its work, and in use the finger oscillates and turns upon the pivot screw 11 and the screw is liable to become loose. To overcome this objection and the troubles incident thereto, the round; boss or hub 9 is made of a predetermined length to permit a split lockin Washer 18 to be used between the fiat en of the hub and the base side of the enlargement or shoulder portion 16 of screw 11, and
when the screw is tightened and screwed into the boss or hub to its maximum a slight space remains between the outer face of the washer and the inner surface of wall 14 and the spring pressing endwise upon the wall maintains this working relation and prevents the washer from being engaged and .disturbed in its' locked setting. The barrel or cap also covers and conceals the locking and working parts except the slotted face of the screw head 15, and when the parts are secured together a free working assembly is had and the established working relationship is permanent.
The oscillatory movement of finger 3 is also limited by a lug 19 at the open side of the cap operating in a notch or recess 26 in the edge of flange 8, and this limiting stop is more especially intended to prevent. the finger from being turned back too far and straining or injuring the spring.
' What I claim is:
1. In a device as described, a bracket, a contact finger having a recessed pivot end, a pivot screw for said finger, and a locking device for said pivot screw inclosed within and covered by said recessed end of said finger.
2. In a device as described, a bracket having an integral boss with a screw-threaded opening, a spring coiled about said boss,
a contact finger having a cap sleeved over said boss and spring, and a pivot screw for said finger having a locking device therefor confined Within said cap.
3. In a device as described, a bracket having a round boss and a contact finger having a cap portion rotatably mounted upon said bracket, a pivot screw extending through said cap portion into said boss, a
