Thepresent invention requires that the shaft, carrying the platen, be rotatable independently of the ratchet, that the ratchet, which may be a special ratchet or the regular s aci'ng ratchet as shown in the drawmg, e secured to the shaft by a clutch, and that the hand wheel be longitudinally movable to operate the clutch. in the resent instance l have shown ,the hand w eel as carried by an auxiliary shaft lying in alinem6Il t Wltl1 the platen shaft. The clutch 'jaws are provided near their free ends with holes, transverse to the shaft, which receive bushings25, provided respectively with right and left internal threads which are engaged by a right and left center screw 26. This center screw is provided, between the jaws, with an angular block 27 on which the clutch lever 28 is mounted. The clutch lever is provided with branches 29 adapted to bear on opposite sides of the flange on the hand wheel. The free ends of the jaws are enlarged to provide ample support for the bushings and are provided with slots 30, see Fig. 3 in connection with Fig. 4, so as to provide spring clamps for the bushings, which are secured by means of screws 31 which pass freely through the outer arms of the clamps, indicated specifically by 32, and engage the other arms which are integral portions of the clutch jaws.
The operation is as follows: As shown in Fig. 3 the hand wheel is moved outward to its extreme position and the clamp has been operated to lock the ratchet to the shaft. The parts remain in this position under the ordinary conditions of use. Suppose now that it is required to detach the platen from the ratchet, as in positioning a ruled form in the machine, the operator moves the hand wheel inward which causes flange 22 to actuate the clutch lever and impart a reverse rotary movement to the center shaft. The effect is, through the engagement of this screw with the right, and left threaded bushings,
to separate the jaws slightly and thereby release their grip on'the hub which, as already explained, is locked to the shaft by means of clamping arms 33 and screws 34 and 35. This leaves the ratchet disconnected from the platen but locked against rotation by the pawl, in the present instance the stop Y awl. The platen may now be rotated freely by means of the-hand wheel which enables the operator to place the paper wherever it may be required without any shifting of the paper relatively to the platen. If the use of the realining mechanism has been to position a sheet of paper or a form, the hand Wheel is moved outward again to lock the ratchet to the shaft as soon as the paper or form is in place. This movement through the action of flange 22, the jaw lever, and the center screw is to cause the jaws to grip the hub and thus lock the ratchet and platen together. The operation of the machine will then proceed as usual, the spacing being performed by the engagement of the s acing pawl with the ratchet. If the clutc does not grip tightly enough it may be readily adjusted by loosening one of the screws 31, turning the bushing slightly and then looking it again. The thread of the bushing may thus be either advanced or retarded, as may be required, to make the grip greater or less, or, should it be desirable to give the center screw reverse action, such action may be obtained by interchanging the bushings. Pushing the hand wheel inward would then cause the aws to grip the hub instead of to release it.
lVhen the realining mechanism is used with variable spacing mechanism, the ratchet does not perform the function of a spacing ratchet, the spacing operation being performed by the variable spacing mechanism and the ratchet being normally loose on the shaft, whereas when serving as a spacing ratchet it must be fixed to the shaft. In using the realining mechanism in connection with variable spacing mechanism, the ratchet is held stationary by the stop pawl. The notch engaged by the stop pawl corresponds with the line that was being written at the time the ratchet was locked. The paper may then be turned freely by'means of the hand wheel. After making the correction the platen is returned to the writing line, that is the platen is turned until the pawl is in engagement with the same notch 1t engaged at the time the ratchet was locked to the platen. In other words the paper is returned with perfect accuracy to the writing line of the machine. The ratchet is now disconnected from the platen and remains stationary until its services are called for again. Without the aid of the ratchet the operator would have to realine the work entirely by sight, which is both difficult and tiresome, whereas with the aid of the ratchet he only has to be sure that he stops at the right notch, which the merest glance will show.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. Mechanism of the character described comprising a hub, a clamp rigidly secured to the hub and adapted to grip a shaft, a ratchet rotatably mounted on the hub, a clutch secured to the ratchet and having jaws inclosing the hub, means for causing the jaws to grip and release the hub, and a pawl for locking the ratchet against rotation when released.

9. In combination a platen shaft, a hub carried thereby, a ratchet mounted to oscillate on the hub, a clutch carried by the ratchet and adapted to engage the hub, a right and left threaded screw by which the clutch is operated, a branched lever secured to said screw, an auxiliary shaft secured to the hub in alinement with the platen shaft, a hand wheel longitudinally movableon the auxiliary shaft and fixed against independent rotation, said hand wheel being provided with a flange which is engaged by the branches of the lever, and means for locking the ratchet against rotation when released from the hub.
