To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL VIKTOR RUDIN, correspondent, subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Karduansmakaregatan 12, Stockholm, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Step by Step Mechanisms in Calculating- Machines, of which the followlng 1s a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in step-by-step mechanisms in calculating machines of that kind, wherein a usual locking-device for the movement of the sllding carriage is provided. Said lockmg-devme consists of a member, arranged on the carriage and movable up and down in a vertical plane, said member normally engaglng in a horizontal row of grooves or notches in the frame of the machine.
In these machines the locking device can be actuated by hand and, at the same time is in any known way actuated by'two rojections or the like, arranged on the sh 1 ng carriage, which projections also engage with a toothed bar or the like.
Machines of that type have been described in U. S. Patent No. 967,821.
My invention is essentially character zed thereby that each of the said pro ections consists of two parts pivotally connected with each other and movable in the vertical plane, of which the one art is intended to be caused to enga e Wit the toothed bar, when actuated in t e said way.
An embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, where- Figure 1 is a front view of a part of the sliding carriage, whereb the casing is partly broken away, in norma or rest ng os1t1on.

1 designates the casing of the slidlng carriage. 2, 7 and 3, 8 designate the two projections, serving for the step-by-step movement of the sliding carriage to the r1 ht or to the left, said projections, of whic 2, 7 are intended to be actuated when moving the carriage to the right, and 3, 8 when moving same to the left, engaging in known way in a member 4, movably up and down in a vertical plane and engaging as usual a horizontal row of grooves, notches or the like 22 on the frame of the machine. The projections 2, 7 respectively 3, 8 are journaled on the sliding-carriage, preferably on plates or disks arranged on the same. Grooves or notches 9 respectively 10 are provided on the projections, suitably on the parts 7, 8 whereby said grooves are intended to catch the member 4: in order to move the same downward.
The projections 2, 7 respectively 3, 8 are actuated by springs, whereby each of the two parts constituting one projection may be actuated by a spring or by a common spring. In the embodiment shown on the drawin the parts 2, 7 respectively 3, 8 are actuate each by a spring 16, 12'respectively 17, 13. The said springs serve to move the projections back to their normal position. The movements of the projections are hereby limited by pins 14, respectivel 15, 21, which suitably lie in the way of t e part 2 res ctively 3.

The function of the device is as follows:
If for instance the carriage is to be moved one step to the right (Fig. 1 or 2), the projection 2 is actuated by hand and moved in the position, shown in Fig. 2. The projection 7 is hereby moved downward and the notch 9 is caused to catch the vertically movable member 4, so as to move the outer end of said member downward and to release its inner end, engaging with the usual horizontal row of grooves or notches, wherebythe carriage is permitted to move.
