IMPROVEMENT IN BEDSTEAD'SLATS.
Speciiicaticn forming part of Letters Patent No. 3l,l98 dated September l0, 1872.
Specification describing certain new and useful Improvements in Bedstead-Slats, &c., invented by DEMETER WEHRLE, of Williamsville, in the county of Erie and State of New York.
Nature of the Invention.
This invention relates to slats and rails of ordinary bedsteads 5 and consists in attaching to each end of the slats a metal catch or hook, which sets into a slot in the rail, and thus holds the side rails together, preventing them from spreading; and it also consists in dovetailing the slats into the rail, as hereinafter described.

It may be found necessary to supply every slat with these hooks, but ordinarily only two or three in the center will be required. In addition to the hooks the ends of the slats are made dovetailed, as shown at d', in Fig. 3, and correspondingly dovetailed in the side-rails to aid the hooks in holding. A
In the ordinary bedstead if the slats become worn or shrink, they will be continually drawing out, or cause the sides to spread out, or if the sides become warped, they will act in the same manner, letting the bed fall to the floor.
The advantages of my construction arekeeping the slats always in place, preventing any swaying of thev bed, and effectually preventing the side-rails from bulging out, or letting the bedding fall to the oor. Y
I do not broadly claimYconnect-ing a slat of a bed with the side-rails by means of dovetails, for such is old; but what I do claim is- The combination of the right-angled metal hook a, rigidly secured upon the dovetailed slat C, as shown, with the recess c and dovetailed groove of the slat supporting side piece B', all constructed and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
