A BRYsoN, a citizen of the United States, and
a resident of Troy, New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in-Centrifugal Drying-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to centrifugal machines, or hydro-extractors, and more particularly to such machines which are mounted to have horizontal equilibrating movement to adjust or compensate for uneven loading.
Ob'ects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part hereinafter, and in part will be obvious herefrom, or may be ascertained from practice with the invention.
The invention consists in the novel parts, constructions, and improvements herein shown and described.
The accompanying drawings, herein referred to, and constituting a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, and together with the description serve to ex lain the principles thereof.

Referring to the machine of the accompanying drawings, illustratin by way of example one embodiment' o the invention, multipoint, flexible or horizontally movable supporting means for the rotat-k ing basket are provided, disposed around and at the general level or horizontal central line of the basket. This' contributes largely to the stabilizing of the machine,
permits the use of parts of less Weight, and
eliminates harmful strain and friction, and also leaves the top ofthe basket entirely free and unobstructed by machine parts, and greatly facilitates the loading and other manipulation of the machine.
In the embodied form, there are provided, symmetrically arranged about the machlne, three standards 1, 2 and 3, mounted upon and secured to the floor or some suitable base. The casing is supported .therefrom by horizontally movable ball and socket Joints. As embodied, each of the standards has at its top an over-hung head 4 which has an central of these lugs has upon'its bottom side a' y arrangements, combinationsy upwardly-opening, spherically cupped recess 5, and below such recess, and opening downwardly therefrom, an aperture or hole 6, increasing in Vdiameter in the downward direction.
Located within the standards 1, 2 and 3 1s a casin 7, of general cylindrical form, Within which casing is the rotating basket for holding the material to be dried. Upon the outside of the casing 7 are three symmetrically disposed lugs 8, 9 and 10, the lu being ositioned preferably substantial y y of the height of the casing. Each downwardly opening, spherically cupped recess 11, and opening upwardly therefrom an aperture or hole 12, increasingI in diameter in the upward direction.
The overhung heads 4 of the respective standards 1, 2 and 3 and the corresponding lugs 8, 9 and 10 on the casing are connected by links 13, thereby providing a multipoint, horizontally swinging suspension for the casing 7 and the rotatable basket therewithin. Links 13 comprise respectively rods 14, passing through the corresponding standard head 4 and casing lug 8, 9 or 10. Nesting within the spherical cup of each head is a hemi-spherically shaped piece 15, and a similarly shaped piece 16 rests within the cup'll of the casing lug. The corresponding rod 14 passes through central apertures in the hemi-spherical pieces 15 and 16, and has suitable fastening means at its ends, preferably nuts 17 and 18, taking on to the threaded ends of the rods 14. By -.this mounting or suspension the casing is left free to move horizontally, but is firmly and smoothly carried by the links in any position and during the shifting movement, and the oints of suspension are approximately in the horizontal line of the rotating load in the basket.
Means are provided by the invention, co operating with ,the means already described and comprising. certain features of the mounting of the rotating basket, or equilibrating an unbalanced rotating load, and for preventing dancing or chatterlng on the suspending links, heating of the bearings, and thumping or pounding of the basket shaft.
In the embodiment of such means, and referring particularly to the mounting. of the casing 7 is upwardl inclined inwardly, and has onevor more out ets 23. The casing Hoor terminates in an upward] extendin flanged hub 21.l The hub 21 as a centra aperture 22 of conical form .with the diameter decreasing in the downward direction, the aperture serving as a seat for the housin of the basket shaft.
The asket 24 ma be of usual form, having vertical sidewa ls 25, and having at the top an overhanging lip or flange 26. The bottom 27 of the basket is also upwardly inclined inwardly toward its center, and has at its central portion a bell-shaped upward rojection'28. IThe part 28 terminates in a ub 29, which hub is centrall apertured, the
' aperture decreasing conical y upwardly, to
form a seating for the basket upon its shaft.
The basket shaft at its upper end is tapered decreasingly u wardly toiit the basket hub 29, the basket eing angularly fixed toits shaft in any'suitable manner. A cap piece 34, provided preferably with an oil cup, covers the end of the shaft and is fastened to hub 29. Encircling shaft 35 below the basket hub 29 vis a housing 36, the house ing being outwardly conically formed to seat within the hub 21 of the suspended casing 7,
' of vet as shown in Fig. 1. The housing 36 is held against rotation relatively to the casing 7 by y suitable means such as a set screw 37 nesting in a recess in the casing hub 21.
A radial bearing 38 is provided, preferably substantially on the horizontal level of the points of suspension of the casing 7, as shown in Fig. 1. rThe bearing comprises an inwardly extending shoulder 39 on the shaft, tg over a horizontally disposed ring 40 encircling the shaft. On its exterior the rin 40 is grooved to form a race for a series alls 41. The balls 41 are encircled exteriorly b a grooved, horizontally disposed ring 42. he ring 42 in turn is seated on an inwardly projecting shoulder 43 formed on the interior of the housing 36. A suitable cap 44 encircles shaft 35 and its overthe 4top of the housing 36. The radial bearing 1s thus in the saine horizontal plane with the center of gravity of thel basket and load.
'A horizontal thrust or sustaining bearing within the housing for the shaft and basket is provided, comprising an inwardly extending shoulder 45 on the shaft, seated on a ring 47 encircling the shaft. Ring 47 is seated on a ring 48, which in turn rests upon horizontally arranged rollers 49. Rollers 49 rest upon a flat ring 50, the ring encircling shaft 35 and resting upon an inwardly projecting shoulder 51 formed on the housing 36. The'basket 25 and its vertical shaft 35 are thus rotatively supported by the. horizontally movable non-rotating casing 7.

cling the balls 56 is a ring 57, grooved within to form a raceway for the balls. A cap 59 encircles shaft 35 and is'fastened to housing 36 to sup ortthe bearing niembers in position. By approximate yv the center "of gravity of the basket and its load, andthe other radial bearing in line with the belt pull, theeccentricity of bearing load is reduced to a minimum.
The embodied driving means'for the basket shaft comprises a pulley 60 ixed to the end .of shaft 35, just below the .lower radial bearing. As shown pulley 60 has a taper fit `on shaft 35, its hub 68 being angularly fixed to the shaft by a set screw 61, and bein held on the shaft by a nut 62. A pulley rake is shown in part by 64.. Pulley is journaled in supporting arms 66, which arms are fixed to a plate 67, supported by the casing 7. I
From the vforegoing it will be seen that the oints of suspension are substantially on tlie horizontal center line of the basket,
and' that the radial thrust due to an unbalanced load is taken up on the radial bearing substantially in the horizontal line or level of the oints of suspension of the casing and of t e center of the basket. Thus the centrifugal force due to the unbalanced load tends to cause a motion oftranslation of the case, and not to tip it and to successively and rapidly lift it from one suspension after another, which is the cause of dancing and `chatteringzofthe supports and pounding of the shaft. The horizontal aline.- ment of the shaft bearingv and points of suspension tends to eliminate any vertically disposed moment or momentum arm of the unbalanced load vertically along the shaft, and obviates the-necessity ofoppositely disposed excess weight to., counteract the consequent tipping tendepcy. By myconstruction, the inertia is reduced to a minimum, land the freedom to gyrate and find a balanced center of rotation (non-coincident with the mechanical or geometric center). due to the unbalanced load is practically a i maximum. The invention in its broader aspects is not' aving one radial bearing at y What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A centrifugal drying machine including in combination, a casing, a rotatable basket within the casing, a plurality of horizontally movable casing supporting devices connected to the casing in a horizontal plane substantially through the middle portion of the basket.
2. A centrifugal drying machine including in combination a casing having a multipoint horizontal] movable suspension, a rotating basket within the casing, a shaft supported by the casing, a radial bearing between 1.5 the shaft and casing approximately in a horiradial bearing having z ontal plane through the points of suspen- Asion on the casing.
3. A centrifu al drying machine -including in combination a casing having a horizontally movable suspension attached to the casing at a plurality of points a rotating basket within the casing, a shaft supported by the casing, a radial bearing between the shaft and casing approximately in a horizontal lane through the center of gravity of the bas et and load.

A centrifugal drying machine including in combination a casing having a multipoint suspension, a rotatin basket ,within the casing, a shaft supporte by the casing, a radial bearing between the shaft and casing approximately in a horizontal plane through the points of suspension on the casing and another radial bearing having a belt pulley carried by the shaft approximately. in the same horizontal plane with said bearingl v5. A centrifugal drying machine includin in combination a casing having a multipoint horizontally movable suspension, a rotatable basket within the casing, a shaft for the basket, a housing for the shaft fitting into the centerof the casing with a downwardly decreasing taper fit. l

A centrifugal drying machine including in combination a horizontally movable, externally supported casing, a rotatable basket within the casing, a shaft for the basket, a housing provided with a plurality of bearings for t e shaft, the housin being'suported by the casing and locate within and beneath the basket bottom and fitting into the center of the casing, to be supported thereby, with a downwardly decreasing taper ft. v
11. A centrifugal drying machine includhorizontally movable,
externally supported casing, a rotatable bas- -ket within the casing, a shaft for the basket, an integral housin having therewithin a pluralityor space -apart bearings for the shaft, said housing being located within and beneath the basket bottom and supported by lthe casing.
