To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY S. S'rRoNA'cH,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boring-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to boring machines and more particularly to wood boring machines for boring out pedestals, bal usters, posts and the like.
It is the object of the invention to provide a boring machine which combines speed of operation and accuracy.
To this end, the invention comprises a hollow shaft having athread of very Wide pitch on the outside and a shiftable support for accuratelyholding the shaft on a fixed axis.
' A more particular object is the provision of mechanism for accurately supporting and guiding a threaded barrel adapted-to bore holes of different diameter in a single operation.
The invention will be more fully described in the annexed specification and more particularly defined in the claims.

Having reference to Fig. 1, 10 represents a suitable frame having the usual guide rails 11 on which is mounted the operating mechanism of the machine. The operating mechanism comprises a pulley 12 mounted on uprights 14 of a frame 16. -17 is a carriage movable along the guide rails 11 and carrying the column or stock to be bored. The hollow shaft which comprises a front portion 18 for boring a hole of relatively small diameter and a rear portion 19 for boring a hole of larger diameter is secured to the pulle 12.

The height of the thread on the front portion 18 is proportional to the diameter of the hole to be bored thereby and the height of the thread on the portion 19 is plrcliportional to the diameter of the larger The front end of the barrelis provided with the usual cutting lips (not shown) and a reamer is secured to the shaft to enlarge the bore made by the former.
Fig. 2 shows the point of the shaft where the reamer is' attached. The double thread 26 which from the front end of the shaft to the reamer has, as has been stated, a height proportional to the size of the bore made by the auger, is continued toward the rear end of the shaft, but its height is increased in proportion to' the counter bore to be made by the reamer. a
The reamer knives 27 and 28 (Fig. 6) are preferably inserted in channels 29 in the crest portion of the enlarged thread 31, and secured therein by a Wedge element 32 forced against the body of the reamer by means of a screw 33 or in any other suitable way.
At the point where the height of the thread is increased, an off-set 34 is made in the double thread for a purpose to be subsequently described. The reamer is so dis posed that its cutting edge 30 projects into the off-set 34.
The supports 20 and 21 have at their upper ends angular seats 35 in which is fitted a stationary box 36 composed for convenience of two halves 36' and 36". This stationary box has a cylindrical opening which forms a bearing for the cylindrical box 37. The cylindrical box 37 (Figs. 7 and 8) has internal ribs 38 and 39 to engage in the grooves of the thread and bear with their inner faces 40 upon the bottom of the thread. These ribs are of such height that the space between them can accommodate the reamer and provides a clearance 41. lVhen the box 37 is exactly'over' the reamer knives, the ribs 38 and 39 clear the knives 27 and 28 as indicated in Fig. 6. However, a conveyer screw or worm 47 may work Within the shaft to more rapidly remove the sa'w dust and shavings from the bore and clear the auger. This conveyor screw -17 may be driven by a pulley 13 mounted on uprights 15 of the frame 1.6 or other suitable means. Constructionsof this kind are Well known and do not form a part of my invention. i

In a'boring machine, the combination of a shaft having a thread on its outer surface aportion of the thread being cutaway define an off-set, a reamer mounted on the thread so that its cutting edge projects into the said off-set, a sup-port, an element revolubly mounted in the support, said element having a projection engaging in the groove of the thread and bearing upon the bottom thereof.

In a boring machine, the combination of a shaft having a thread on its outer surface, part of the thread being cut away to form a lateral ofiset, a reamer blade adjustably mounted in the thread and projecting into said ofi'set. 11. 12. In a boring machine, the combination of a shaft having a multiple thread on its outer surface, part of the thread being cut away to form lateral ofisets and a reamer blade mounted in each thread and projecting into the offset.
