M 1:. Hats;- E R VE QiT E SEY,IASS NQK T0 T A nevi AND EQ M N B'P -BA T QNQQF W QQ BQB'A IQNQ E QRK- f see-unaware cesarean- To all whom it may concern?- Be it known thatI, 'I'IARRY'B. HILLS, a. citizen of the United States of America, residing in Rivertominthe county of Burling-' ton, in the- State of New Jersey, have invented certain, new and, useful Improve ments in Boat-Launching; Carriages, of which the following is' a true and exact de scription, reference being had 'to the accompanying drawings, [which form a part thereof. V
My invention relatesto life boats, and has for its object to provide a boat launching carriage adapted for temporary attachment to one side of a life boat andso constructed -as to facilitate the launching of the boat over a shipss'ide,-and at'the 'same time to protect the boat from; injury bystriking against the side of the ship.
The nature of myinvention will be best understood as described '11 connection with the drawings in which it is in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a life boat equipped with my improved launching carriage.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the boat and carriage, with portions of the side of the boat broken away so as to show the mode of attachment of the carriage to the boat.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the carriage on the line 33 of 1, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 3, showing a modification of the means for connecting the wheels of the carriage to the buffer bar.
A is the boat, AA, Fig. 2, the gunwales of the boat, BB indicate suspension cables by which the boat can be connected to the davits, not shown.
C is a bufier bar shaped to extend over and fit against a considerable portion of the side of the boat, its inner face C being conformed approximately to such curvature as the boat may have. As shown, the buffer bar is formed with slots CC, extending in from its face; the bottom of the slot in Fig. 3 being shown as having a cam like curve for a purpose which will be explained. DD, Fig. 3, are spring bars located in the slots and having their inner ends firmly secured to the buffer bar as by bolts indicated at EE. On the outer ends of these spring bars are secured wheels FF, which normally project beyond the face of the buffer bar C,

the boatswinging against the side of the ship with a considerable force will be'pressed back until they are flush with the outer surface of the buffer bar C,the springs DD yielding and-the cam surfaces C 0 of the slots CC affording a progressive support to the spring bars as they are bent inward, sothatthey will act with constantly increasing force;
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 4 the bar DD is not a. spring'bar, but is piv-. otally attached at G to a plate G held in place on the buffer bar by a bolt E, and having its outer end spring supported as by a coiled spring H. In other respects the construction is similar to that of Fig; 3 except that'the bottom of the slot neednot have the curved" cam shape illustratedin Fig. 3.
II are brackets secured to the buffer bar 0 and supporting hooks indicated at I, illustrated and which hook over the gunwales of the boat as shown in Fig. 2. As shown, the brackets I are formed with an inclined under surface I which materially facilitates the launching of the boat as it is swung over the edge of the ship when the ship is so heeled over that the boat does not swing clear. I indicates a projecting end of the bracket I; to each of these ends is attached a cable J which is passed under the bottom of the boat and which has its free end J attached in any convenient Way to the opposite edge of the boat from that to which the launching carriage is attached. As shown, the cables J are attached with cleats indicated at A K, Fig. 2, indicates the side of a ship with the launching carriage resting against it.
It is, of course, apparent that in the launching of the life boat, equipped with my improved launching carriage, over the side of the ship, any tendency of the boat to swing inward against the side of the ship will result in the wheels F of the carnage coming in contact with the ships side,

e which is thus protected against What would be apt to be destructive blows if no bulfer bufier bar the springs and transmit it toa very considerable portion of the side of the boat,
bar Were supplied. 7 When the boat is in the Water the carriage serve as a sea anchor. V .1 It will, of course, be obviousthat my invention is capable of considerable modification ithout departure from its spirit and that the special form I-liave illustrated as;
cal embodiment for use. o
Having now described "my, invention, What I claim, as new "and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is: a V I 1. A boat: launching, carriage. consisting of a"continuous longitudinally extending formed to fit against andover a considerable length of the side of the boat,
shown is What I believe to be its best practiin combination With Wheels secured to-the ends of the buffer bar and extending beyond its outer surface, and means for detachably securing the buffer barto the side of the boat; o
2. A boat launching carriage consisting of a buffer bar formed to fit along and over a considerable length of the in combination With Wheels spring supported at theends ofthe buffer bar andnormally projecting-beyond the face of the 'bar, and means for detachably securing the buffer bar to the side of the can readily be removed from it, and can be released, or may usefully be retained to hook over the edge of the boatzand cables.
attached to the bar and adapted to pass under the boat. to be secured at its; opposite edge.
4. A of a buffer bar formedgto fit'along and over aconsiderable length of the side of the side of the boat,
boat launching carriage consisting boat, in combination with; Wheels secured to;
the ends of the buffer bar, hook brackets secured to the bufler .bar
and adapted to hook over,
said brackets being formed with inclined sidesextending from the bufler bar toward the bottom of the boat, and cables attached to the lower endsofthebrackets and. adapted topass under the boat and to be attachedto its opposite edge. HARRY B. HILLS.
