To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY G.Vo1erir, a

citizen of the United States, residing in New Britain, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt-Dogging Means, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. s

This invention relates to means for dogging a bolt in its retracted position, the invention being illustrated in connection with a vertically sliding bolt of an emergency exit lock or so-called panic bolt of the type which is applied to the doors of school-houses,

theatres, department stores, and other buildings for facilitating exit where a fire or the it being obvious, however,

One construction of the type of panic bolt just referred to is disclosed in my copending application, Serial No. 206,323, filed division.

Referring-to the drawings, I have shown my improvements applied to a panic bolt ,mechanism, embodying a bolt at the upper edge of the door for cooperating with a strike the lintel and a swinging cross-bar extending across the door and adapted to retract the bolt when said crossbar is moved. The bolt is preferably of the square head type, that is the upper end of the bolt is at right angles to its axis, instead of being beveled like a latch bolt. This type of bolt mustobviously be held in its retracted position while the same is being swung into .alinement with its strike plate. I, therefore, provide the sliding bolt with a detent mechanism for automatically holding the same in its retracted position, when it is released by mentioned, means being provided for releasing the detent automatically when the door is closed again, so that the bolt thereupon takes into its keeper,

mounted in said casing, a dogging device mounted within said casing for dogging said bolt in its retracted position, a shoulder upon said dogging device, a proj eotion upon said bolt cooperatmg with said shoulder for normally retaining said dogging device in its inoperative position, means for moving said dogging device into dogging position when said bolt is retracted, and means for automatically releasing said dogging device when said door is closed.

3. In combination with a door and door frame, a casing applied to said door adjacent an edge thereof, a sliding bolt movable in said casing, a keeper upon said door frame to receive said bolt, a hollow detent slidably mounted in said casing to dog said bolt in its retracted position, a spring housed within said hollow detent and arranged to move the same into dogging position, and means upon said keeper for moving said detent out of dogging position.

4. In combination with a door and door frame, a casing applied to said door adjacent an edge thereof, a sliding bolt movable in said casing, a keeper upon said door frame to receive said bolt, a detent mounted to slide transversely within said casing and movable into and out of dogging engagement' with said bolt, said detent having an end extending outwardly through said oasing, a spring for moving said detent into dogging engagement with said bolt, and means upon said keeper positioned to engage the exposed end of said detent to force copies of this patent the same inward out of its bolt dogging position.

5. In a casing, a slidably mounted bolt, an inwardly directed guide pin upon a face of said casing, and means for dogging said bolt against movement, comprising a hollow detent slidably mounted upon said guide pin, and a spring for moving said detent into dogging engagement with said bolt.

In a casing, a slidably mounted bolt, an inwardly directed guide pin within said casing, and means for dogging said bolt against movement, comprising a detent slidably mounted within said casing, said detent having a socket formed in one end to slidably receive said guide pin and having its opposite end protruding through a wall of said casing, and a spring for moving said geilzent into dogging engagement with said 7 In a casing, a slidably mounted bolt, an inwardly directed guide pin within said casing, a detent slidably mounted within said casing and movable into and out of dogging engagement with said bolt, said detent having an end protruding outwardly through a wall of said casing and having a socket formed in its opposite end to slidably receive said guide pin, and a spring operatively mounted within said socket to move said detent into dogging position.
