YOHTARO UCHIDA, OF TOKYO, JAPAN.
ELECTRIC-CURRENT LIMITER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 22, 1919.
Application filed June 18, 1917. Serial No. 175,467.
To all H lton/4:2. may com-cm.
lieit known that l. Yon'rano llcnnn, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at No. 10 l-Cliome, Shin-ami-cho, Azabu Kn, Tokyo, Japan, engineer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lllectric-(fnrrent liimiters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a circuit breaker and aims to provide one of the magnetic type wherein all danger of sparking when the circuit is broken will be eliminated, in addition to the provision of a device of this nature which will have a smooth and positive action.
This invention further aims to provide a device of this nature wherein the flow of current will not be stopped after the circuit has been broken by the breaker, but rather where the current will be directed to a circuit wherein there is a resistance sufficient to insure that a too great flow of current will never exist.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein I have disclosed a sectional side elevation of my device, it will be seen that the reference numeral 1 is applied to a housing, preferably constructed of glass, so that the device may be viewed in operation, as well as obtaining the benefit of the insulating qualities of this material and itsbeing non-effected by gases, etc.
The lower end of the tube or container 1 is divided by means of a partition wall 2, forming chambers 3 and 3' which are adapted to be filled with mercury. Contacts 4 and 4 project into the lower end of the chambers 3 and.3'- and contact with the mercury. The upper end of the tube or container 1 is open and is greatly enlarged, the opened end being closed by means of a stopper or other suitable device 5, inc-losing a tube 6 permitting of the escape of gases which might be generated. A shield 18' is suspended from the sto per 5 for a purpose hereinafter to be speci ed.
A fluid 7, which ispreferably mineral oil, as it must embody the following qualities, that it be non-corrosive for the metal used, an insulating substance, the specific gravity of which should be different from that of mercury, is filled into the container 1 to approximately the level indicated in the drawmg.
- A tube 8 housing a number of iron rods, or similar metallic material which is capable of being acted upon by magnetic influences, is suspended in the liquid 7, a contacting fork being adjustably secured by means of the adjusting nut 13 to the lower end of the tube 8. It will be noted from the drawings that the ends of the fork 10 project into the upper surface of the mercury thus bridging the gap between the contact members 4 and l and permitting a How of current fromone to the other.
Housed in the upper end of the tube 8 is a shock absorbing substance whichimay be raw cotton, preventing the breakage of the tube 8 by means of any sudden motion which would impart a hammer-like action to the metallic fillers 9.
A main coil 11', and circle the indicated auxiliarycoil 11' envessel or container ata point in the drawings, which point is slightly above the usual horizontal plane in The end of the eonductor l is electrically connected with the which the tube 8 rests.
end of the main coil 11 and the beginning of the auxiliary COll 11. The conductor 4 has an electrical connection at the terminal end of the auxiliary coil and a low circuit, the
main coil being so arranged as to connect with the supply circuit and the circuit of the auxiliary co'il having a suitable resistance 12. rom the above it will be seen that the current normally passes from the contact 4: through the fork 10 to the contact 4, etc.
Granting now that a too great amount of current is beingintroduced into the circuit, the magnetism of the coils 11 and 11' will become greatly increased and the tube 8, Which is held down by the weight of the magnetic filling 9 and the fork 10 will be acted upon by such coils, due to the substance 9 in the tube 8, causing the tube to rise through the fluid 7 or to the position indicated in dotted lines, thus breaking the circuit bridged by the fork members 10. As soon as this action has taken place it will be seen that the circuit will now pass through the auxiliary coil to the external circuit by means of the resistance 12 inserted therein. Having now described my invention what I claim is A circuit breaker including a tube, contacts located in the bottom thereof, such tube being filled throughout its operative length with a fluid, a movable member with- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in such tube,1means secured to thellower end in presence of two Witnesses.
of said ll'l8111)01 for bridging sale contacts, T
and a magnet above said movable member, XOHTARO UCHIDA' and a shield extending from the top of such Witnesses: tube adapted to prevent too great a vertical H. F. .IIAWLEY, motion of the movable member. H. YASUMURE.
