CARLTON A.`WIL1V[ORE, OF BEN AVON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO E. J. SCHELLENTRAGER AND ONE-THIRD T0 J'. HOMER SCHELLENTRAG-ER, BOTH OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAIL-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented'July 22, 1919.
. Application iled April 24, 1919. Serial No. 292,414.
The object of the invention is to provide a clamp which will adjust itself to variations, inequalities and irregularities in either the rail base flange or the supporting vcross tie or other member to which the rail is to be secured. v
. base ange.
In the accompanying drawing Figure l is a transverse section through a rail and the clamp engaging the same; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the clamp.
In the drawing l indicates a railroad rail of standard design having the usual base flanges 2. 3 indicates the base member to which the rail is secured, and which may be a metallic cross tie, a girder or stringer of any kind, or a concrete base or foundation member. l indicates the rail clamp, the same having a body ofthe necessary dimensions and provided at one side with a projecting lip 5 which extends over the rail base flange and has its lower face shaped to conform to the upper Vface of the rail The body of the clamp is provided with a hole 6 for receivingthe fastening bolt 10, which will extend through or be anchored in the foundation or base supporting member" 8; This hole 6 is slightly elongated in a direction normal to the axis of the rail, as shown in lFig. 2, thereby allowing for the adjustment of the clamp toward and from the rail in order to accommodate itself to variations in thickness or width of the rail base flange, or in the positionof the rail relative to an anchored Copies of this patent 'may be obtained for fixed bolt, and nevertheless permit the clamp ing lip 5 to properly seat on the rail base flange. `This hole is furthermore flared, that is, increased in size from the central portion of the body both upwardly and downwardly, in order that the clamp may adjust itself by tilting either lengthwise around the end angle 9, or sidewise, to accommodate itself'to irregularities in either` the rail base flange, or in the cross tie or other foundation member. This hole is flared in a manner to bring the wall portion 7 thereof parallel to the wall portion 7a and the wall portion 8 parallel to the wall portion 8a, as a result of which the clamp can tilt slightly in any direction, even though the bolt fill the hole fairly well.
This clamp will be made in several standard sizes to accommodate rails of various weights. It will preferably be made by a forging operation, in suitable dies shaped to give the iinal form to the clamp, the dies being provided with projecting portions to form the hole 6. f
I claim:
1. A rail clamp having a body provided with a lip to extend over the rail base flange and provided with a bolt hole which increases in size from approximately the vertical middle of the body toward both the top and bottom faces thereof.
2. A rail clamp having a body provided with a lip to extend over the rail base flange and provided withV a bolt hole which is elongated in a direction normal to the rail to be clamped and increases in size from approximately the vertical middle portion of the body toward both the top and bottom faces thereof.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
