To all whom it may concern:
Be it-known that 1, Roman WARNooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomfield. county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new 'and useful Improvements in Mufiier Construction for Air-Pumps and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for muffling the exhaust from an air pump, engine, or the like, and is particularly applicable for use in connection with suction pumps where the air is drawn into the pump cylinder through a system of piping and expelled directly from the cylinder into the outer air. \Vhere a sudden exhaust of air or gases takes place under such conditions through a restricted orifice the continued expulsion of pufi's of air through the orifice is in many cases very objectionable, and the present invention has for its object the provision of a simple structure, preferab y a part of the pump itself, for reducing or eliminating the sound of the exhaust. The nature and more specific objects of the invention will appear from the followin detailed description of one preferred embodiment thereof.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, lfigure 1 is a vertical section through a, suction pump embodying one form of the invention taken on line I-I of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a composite plan view of the pump cylinder showing at the left a portion of the outer head or cover, in the center a portion of the valve plate which comes directly under the cover, and at the right a portion of the lower or valve head which lies under the valve plate. Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates an air pump which may he of any usual or suitable construction and which is provided with the cylinder 2 in which reciprocates the piston 23. Secured to Specification of Letters Patent.

or formed as a part of the upper end of the cylinder is a main head member 4, which I will term the valve head." This may be of any suitable construction, but
'as illustrated is preferably of the form described and claimed in my application Serial Number 70,903. As shown, this valve head comprises an annular portion 5 surrounding the projecting upper end 6 of the cylinder and supported upon and bolted to a flange 7 on the cylinder. This annular portion of the head contains a chamber 8 which is provided with one or more orifices 9 to which the pipes which are to be exhausted are connected. A smaller annular chamber 10 is formed in the top of the valve-head and is connected to the large annular chamber through the spaces 11. Ports 12 extend entirely through the valvehead into the upper end of the cylinder, while ports 13 extend from the upper surface of the valve-head into the small annular chamber 10. Mounted on the valve head is a valve plate 14, the valve plate and head being formed to provide an annular recess 15 between them which communicates with the ports 12 and 13. In this recess is situ ated the inlet valve 16 which is preferably in the form of a light, annular metal ring which is adapted to seat upon the surface of the valve head so as to close the ports 13 during the upstroke of the pump piston. Springs 17 are preferably employed to assist in seating this valve quickly. The valve plate 14 has passages 18 which communicate with the annular outlet port 19 formed in its upper face. This port is adapted to be closed during the downward or suction stroke of the pump piston by an annular outlet valve 20 which may, if desired, be assisted in closing by springs 21. The out let valve is retained in position and, its movements properly limited by the cover plate 22. which is secured in position upon the valve plate 14. The valve plate and cover may be attached to the pump cylinder in any suitable manner as for instance by the cap screws 23 passing through the bosses 2+ and 25 and screwing into the upper wall of the valve head. The construction so far described is substantially that set forth in my prior application above mentioned, Serial N umber 70,903, and is referred to merely by wily of illustration.
t will be understood that the present invention is not limited to the particular valve arrangement set forth and may be employed with any other valve and c linder construction to which it is adapted.
As above referred to this invention relates to the means for mutliingthe exhaust and in the embodiment of the invention illustrated comprises the following construction: Formed in the valve plate and cover respectively are the annular grooves 26 and 27 which combine to form a large annular recess into which the air forced out of the pump cylinder is discharged through the ports 12, recess 15, openings 18 and outlet port 19. This recess or chamber 27 is preferably of substantial volume and acts as a muiiler space to absorb some of the violence of the discharge oi the air. An extended outlet is provided for this chamber so as to distribute the outflow of air as much as )ossible and prevent it from being expel ed in violent and localized pufi's, which cause the objectionable noises. This outlet opening is preferably formed by lea"- ing a narrow annular space 28 between the outer walls 29 and 30, respectively, of the valve plate and cover. This annular space, it will be seen, extends throughout the entire circumference of the cylinder head, thus providing a large but narrow outlet area for the exhaust.
With the construction illustrated, it will be seen that an efi'ective mufiler for the exhaust from the ump is provided and that this is accomplis ed in an exceedingly simple manner, and, in fact, without the addition of any extra parts whatever to the pump. The necessary elements of the pump construction are themselves formed to produce the muflling effect.
In Fig. 4, I have illustrated a slightly modified construction in which the members 14 and 22 are provided with parallel flanges 35, which increase the area of the surfaces forming the walls of the narrow opening 28. This increases the frictional resistance to the escape of the exhaust and has the efl'ect of further muflling the latter.
In Fig. 5, I have shown another modification of the invention in which the exhaust may be discharged either through an extendednarrow outlet directly into the outer air or in which the exhaust may take place into a pipe, which may lead to the outside of the building or to any form of m'ufliing device desired. As illustrated in this figure, the valve plate 36 and the cover 37 are not formed with any specially constructed muflling arts, but are shown as of the same form il ustrated in my pr'ior application above rcf crrcd to. The cover 37 has a chamber 38 formcd therein, which is provided with accntral opening 39 adapted to have an exhaust pipe connected therewith. In case, however, it is not desired to use the exhaust pipe but to obtain a direct though mutlled exhaust, I close the opening 39 with a plug 40 and provide an extended narrow outlet for the exhaust pipe by lifting the cover slightly away from the plate 36. This may conveniently be accomplished by inserting washers 41 upon the screws 23, and betwecn the plate and cover. When the exhaust is discharged through a pipe connected to the outlet, the washers can be taken out and the cover clamped tightly upon the plate.
It will be understood that the constructions shown and described are merely illustrative of some of the many forms in which my invention may be embodied. I do not, therefore, intend to limit myself to these specific constructions, but intend to cover the principle of my invention broadly in whatever form it may be embodied.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In apparatus of the character described, a cylinder assembly including a pair of head members inclosing a discharge valve chamber between them and a discharge valve in said chamber, said members being formed to provide an elongated opening from said chamber to the outer air to muille the sound of the exhaust.
2. In apparatus of the a cylinder assembly including a pair of head members formed to inclose a discharge valve recess between them, one of said members being provided with discharge ports opening into said recess, and an annular discharge valve in said recess covering said ports, said members being formed to provide a narrow annular outlet from said chamber to the outer air.
3. In apparatus of the character described, a mufiler comprising a pair of members each having an annular groove formed therein, said grooves, when brought together, constituting a muiiiing recess, the outer walls of said gro -,s being s aced apart to provide an annular disc arge opening.
