DEAETING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jly'ez, 1919.
Application iled May 29, 1918. Serial No. 237,314.
To all whom z't may concern: Y
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS J. BLAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drafting Appal board, illustrating the application of my imratus, of which the following is a specicao tion.
This invention relates to drafting and drawing material, and has for one of its principal objects to provide `an improved apparatus capable of being employed in conordinary T square or angle for purposes of drawing parallel and other straight lines in the process of constructing `a -sketch or drawing.
-Another object of the invention resides in an improved device of this character capable of being readily applied to a drawing board or other similar surface, and which willbe simple and convenient to operate,` 4control anld adjust and embodyin improved features of construction for e ecting the drawing of paralleldisposed lines.
A further object is to construct the apparatus or device in such manner as to permit the same to be readily shifted fromone4 position to another over the surface of the board to which. itis' applied, for thepurpose of drawing horizontal or obliquek lines,v
and toprovide novel means for locking the ruling member thereof in an adjustedv position to permit of the inscribing ofexactlyf parallel lines.
A still further and important object Vof,
the invention "is to provide a ruling member Y of the apparatus withcoperative means for determining its `extent of lmovement from position to position over the face of `the 4board or other surface upon which it is mounted, and whereby the apparatus will also ,be capable of Serving in the capacity of a rule or scale. l
With these anid other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention accordingl consists in thenovel featuresofconstructlon, combination of elements, and arrangementof arts hereinafter more fully described and aving the scope lthe ribs and grooves.
` thereof particularly pointed out in the appended claims. In the drawings, wherein has been shown the preferred embodiments of the invention: Figure 1 is a plan view of a drawing proved ruling apparatus applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 2-2lof Fig. l, and illustrating the cross sectional formation of theruling member, l f
Fig. 3 is an rend elevation of the ruling member discl0sing'the bracket construction thereof",
- Fig. l is a detailed sectionalview of the cable clamp,
Fig. 5 lis an enlarged fragmentary secltional View of a slightly modified form of ruling member.
Referring more particularly to the details of the invention, the `letter A represents any ysuitable form of drawing-board or other similar surface adapted for theA preparation `and construction of various v :with longitudinally extending ribs 4, which ribs are positioned within similarly extending grooves' 5 formed in the edges 3. Any suitable adhesive may be employed for firmly sealing the joint existing between The ends of the rulingY member are equi ped l with rigid brackets 6, which brac ets are formed to include securing `tongue .portions Tand offset roller` carrying extremities 8, these extremities being located outside ofthe margins of the board A for purpose to be presently set forth.
vThe lower corners of the board A, in this instance, are equipped with cleats 9 and'lO to which the free extremities of a single cord or cable 11 are adapted to be secured. To
. larger withv regard to its ltransverse area r the adjacent edge oftheboard A,and is passed about a pulley or other similar guide 15 mounted upon the lower face of the member bracket 6.
a longitudinally extendingy guide passage 16 formed in the ruling member l, and passesV throughtheentire 'length of said member, as
iscl'early shown; in Fig. 1.' This passage 16 t cord11 which pass throughlthe passages is preferably formed as a part of one of the grooves 5, by for-ming said groove slightly than the corresponding rib 4. This feature l 16 between the side wall of the rib 4 and the adjacent wall of the groove 5.
l After emerging from the passage 16, the cable is passed around a pulley 17 rmounted upon vthe underface of the member .bracket 6, Vwhence it is directed upwardly, as'fshown at 18 to pass over a pulley 19, orother equivalent guide, mounted .upon a :bracket 20 located adjacent to one of the upper corners .of the'board A.` From the pulleyA 20 the ucable entends longitudinallyI across the board, as indicated at 21 andistrained about vanother. pulley 22 carried by abraCket 23v mounted upon the opposite-corner of said' board. -From 'this latter pulley the cord eX-y tends downwardlyas at 24, and is passed about a secondpulley25 and carried by the underface of the member bracket 6, whence it is trained through 'a longitudinally eX- D tending guide Ipassage 26 formed in the opf posite edge of the member 1 las regards the From this construction i that therulingfmember may `be moved over the face of the board A, andwill be guided in its-movements ,byA virtueof the location,y
. scribed', and itiwill be' noted that'theruling :i .'.member will be capable of being Ashifted from .horizontal to oblique positions this i shifting being compensated for by the peculpassage 16. From thispassage 26, the cord, passes about a pulley` 27,;carried by they gbracketY 46a l and .extends downwardly as at 28 and has its free endssfecured to the cleat 10,1whichv latter isprovidedgwith a threaded screw-29 and a 4thumb nut 30, the latter be-. 1 ing employed for 'securely retaining the `free endof thecord portion 28.
and arrangement ofthe cord mechanism deiar arrangement of the cord structure.
However, in order to lockthe ruling mem` `ber in such manner to enable the same to Ibe capable' of exact parallel movement, lthe invention provides a clampstructure 31, which in this instance consists of a base plate 32 Y similar measuring devices.
Lis revolved inlaid-ownfward directionthe toe portion 35 thereof will'be swung into'clamping relation with the cord 21 so as to prevent the-,latter from being shifted longitudinally of the board A. From this it will be noted that the ruling member will be permitted to t travel in" parallel directions only, and can From this point the cable extends through not beadjusted to other positions until the clamping structure has been released to per- I16v and26 with ya suitably afixed indicator 36. Thiswindicator in the preferred ,forms V ,of the invention `simply being provided by offconstruction provides the guide passage marking in vany suitable manner a portion of the cord 11. this marked portion being s clearly discerniblethrough the celluloid or -other transparent edges :3. These; latter the indicators 36`will move in unison there-- with, and thev movementof these indicators may be readily observed by comparing. the
same with the scales 87, thus rendering it possibletoaccujrately determine the extent employing the lservices of dividers or other From k the lforegoing d cription taken in connection with theaccompanying drawing it will be seentha-t there is'provided a device whereby the obj ects of the invention have been. achieved, andthat all -of the advantageous features yofV construction: above mentioned are, among others, present.` The apparatus ogf movement i of fthef ruling member without may be quickly applied to any'formof draw` ing board, fs "capableof being veasily and efficiently operated and in use'combines a T square, yangle and i measuring implements into a single tool, which is characterizedby "its simplicity of operati-on and mode of ad: ,y Y y justment. 1t willbe appreciated thatvarit will be manifest,
ous changes may be made Ain the construction of the device from thatabove set forth. For
instance, as vshown in Fig. 5, theruling member maybe provided lwith aruling edge 40 -ofdiii'erent constructionv from that prefviouslydescribed. This latter ruling Aedge consists of a plurality of Celluloid members 41 which are vsuitably joinedtogether, to .provide a longitudinallyextending cord receiving passage-42, through which the` Cord `1 1a 1s adapted-to pass.., This cord carries ran :indicator arm orarrow 43, which is `movable "over af graduated surface 44..4 vWith this latter i'orm of indicator. slight movements of;
the ruling member may be accurately 0bserved, and is particularly adapted for iine work.
I claim:
