Specication of Letters Patent. Patented July 22, 1919.

l To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM SCOTT, of 22 `Waverley Gardens, Crossmyloof, Glasgow, Scotland, a subject of .the King of valve.
Great Britain, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Steam-Trap, of which the following is a specification.V
` r1his invention relates to an improved and simplified construction of steam trap ofthe thermostatic class having inner and outer members composed of metals having diierent ratios of expansion and contraction under changes in temperature.
The main feature of the invention is that the inner member, into which-the steam enters, is provided with a valve at its end this valve having on, or in connection with it, a cup part or extension so made as to prevent the steam having direct access to the valve and the valve seat which latter is, preferably, formed on, or in, a removable coupling fitted in, or to, the outer member. The construction of the device, as a whole, is very simple and therefore inexpensive and can be readily fitted in steam pipe lines.
The improved trap is shown, by way of illustration or example, on the accompanying sheet of drawings, whereon:

`The trap shown comprises an outer tube a, preferably made of iron or steel, and an inner tube b, preferably made of copper or brass, the inner tube being screwed, or otherwise fitted, at one end, in a cap c at the top of the outer tube and, at the other end, having an internal plugd to whichV a cone or like valve e is screwed this valve having a cylindrical extension or cup c1 which surrounds the inner tube for a short distance, an annular chamber or space being left between the cup and the inner-tube.` The end of the inner tube, within the said cup, has a series of holes f through which the water or steam can pass. The outer tube has also a bottom cap g into which is removably inserted a pipe coupling h (for connection to the drain) having a central passage y' whose upper lip jl serves as a seat for the conic A number of interchangeable couplings may be lused to suit the different drain pipe connections and to provide different valve seats jl. known manner, owing to the differential action of the metals composing the tubes a. b.
Whenever the valve opens, the steam ej ecting the water and escaping through the holes j', passes into the cup e1 (which may be partially or wholly filled with water) and has not direct access to the face of the valve c and the valve seat jl with the result that these parts are not so liable to wear away.
The trap is exceedingly simple in construction, the parts can be readily assembled, and the trap, when assembled, can be readily fitted in a pipe line or elsewhere. The trap can be used in certain cases as a thermostatic valve.
Having now fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent iszl. A steam trap, operated thermostatically, comprising an outer member, an inner member capable of movement relatively to the outer member, a valve on the end of the inner member and movable therewith and a seat for said valve on the outer member, the valve having a hollow extension located between the inner and outer members and means whereby steam can pass through the inner member into `the hollow extension and thereafter into the outer member.
2. A steam trap, operated thermostatically, comprising an outer hollow member, an inner hollow movable member, a conical `valve at the end of the inner member and movable therewith and a seat for said valve, the valve having a hollow extension located between the inner and outer members and means whereby steam canV pass through the inner member into the hollow extension and inner and outer members and meansuwhereby steam can pass through the inner member into the hollow extension and thereafter into the outer member.

A steam trap, operated therinostatically, comprising` an outer tube, an inner steam tube a Conie valve, with tubular extension, at the end of the inner tube, a seat for said conie valve, means for the passage of steam from the inner tube to said extension and a seat for said valve said seat being supported from the outer tu'be.
5.7A steam trap, operated thermostatically, comprising an outer tube, an inner steam tube capable of movement relatively to the outer member, a eonic valve at the end of and movable with the inner tube, said valve having a cylindrical extension located between the inner and outer tubes, means for the passage of steam from the inner tube to said extension and a seat for said valve said seat being on a removable coupling secured to the outer tube.
